Chapter 2: The Name That Changed Everything
The regional director practically sprinted across the marble floor.
“Ms. Bennett, are you all right?””
I recognized him immediately.
James Carter had overseen several of my father's hotels for nearly a decade. He had attended my wedding and sent a beautiful silver baby bracelet when Grace was born.
“James,” I said quietly.
He stopped in front of me.
Then his eyes moved to my cheek.
His expression hardened.
“Who did this?””
Before I could answer, Marcus stepped forward.
“Mr. Carter, there's been a misunderstanding.””
James turned.
“What misunderstanding?””
Marcus straightened his tie.
“A guest became disruptive. I was attempting to resolve the matter.””
Victoria seized the opportunity.
“Thank goodness you're here. This woman has been making accusations against me.””
James looked at her.
“Mrs. Whitmore?””
Victoria smiled with relief.
“Yes. I'm glad someone responsible has arrived.””
James didn't smile back.
“Did you strike Ms. Bennett?””
Victoria blinked.
“What?””
“Did you strike her?””
“That is a ridiculous question.””
James looked at Marcus.
“Have you reviewed the security footage?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Not yet, sir.””
“Then why are you making decisions?””
“Mrs. Whitmore is an important guest.””
James stared at him.
“That's not an answer.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“Listen, I don't know who this woman is, but I have been staying here for three nights. My husband is a very important client of this hotel.””
James finally looked directly at her.
“And?””
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
I shifted Grace into a more comfortable position.
“James, I don't want anyone shouting around my daughter.””
“Of course, Ms. Bennett. I'm sorry.””
Victoria stared at him.
“Why do you keep calling her that?””
James didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he turned toward the reception desk.
“Emily, please bring me the guest incident log.””
The receptionist hurried away.
Marcus looked increasingly uncomfortable.
“Mr. Carter, perhaps we should discuss this privately.””
“No,” James replied.
“We should discuss it accurately.””
Victoria laughed nervously.
“Are you seriously taking her side?””
James's expression became colder.
“I'm taking the side of the truth.””
A few seconds later, the glass doors opened again.
My father walked in.
Richard Bennett was sixty-two, tall, silver-haired, and usually impeccably composed. Tonight, his overcoat was unbuttoned, and his expression made the entire lobby seem smaller.
He came straight to me.
“Danielle.””
I tried to smile.
“Hi, Dad.””
He gently touched the uninjured side of my face.
“Let me see.””
“It's okay.””
“No, sweetheart. Let me see.””
He examined the red mark.
Then he looked at Grace.
“Is my little girl all right?””
I nodded.
“She slept through most of it.””
My father kissed Grace's forehead.
“Good girl.””
Then he turned toward James.
“Explain.””
James stood straighter.
“Mr. Bennett, we're still establishing exactly what happened.””
“Then establish it.””
Marcus swallowed.
“Sir, I was handling a difficult guest situation.””
My father looked at him.
“Who are you?””
“Marcus Reed. Front-of-house manager.””
“Did you see my daughter being struck?””
Marcus glanced at Victoria.
“I arrived afterward.””
“Did you ask her whether she was injured?””
Marcus said nothing.
“Did you review the cameras?””
“Not yet.””
“Did you attempt to remove her from the property?””
Marcus's silence answered for him.
My father slowly nodded.
“Interesting.””
Victoria finally stepped forward.
“Mr. Bennett, I think there's been some confusion. Your daughter was behaving inappropriately, and I was simply trying to protect the atmosphere of the hotel.””
My father looked at her.
“Who are you?””
“Victoria Whitmore. My husband is Jonathan Whitmore. We have a very substantial relationship with your company.””
My father studied her for a moment.
“Jonathan Whitmore?””
“Yes. He owns Whitmore Capital.””
“I know the company.””
Victoria relaxed.
“Wonderful. Then I'm sure we can resolve this privately.””
My father didn't respond.
Instead, he turned toward James.
“Bring up the security footage.””
James nodded.
“Already requested, sir.””
A few moments later, Emily returned with a tablet.
James connected it to the reception monitor.
The screen showed the lobby from several angles.
We watched Victoria approach me.
We watched her stop directly in front of me.
We watched her point at my clothes.
Then came the slap.
The sound wasn't audible, but the movement was unmistakable.
Grace's tiny body jerked against my chest as I turned to shield her.
Victoria's hand had struck my face.
There was no confusion.
No accidental contact.
No misunderstanding.
The footage continued.
It showed Marcus approaching, listening to Victoria, and immediately directing his attention toward me.
Then it showed him pointing toward the exit.
My father watched without blinking.
When the footage ended, nobody spoke.
Victoria was the first to break the silence.
“Well, she provoked me.””
My father turned slowly.
“How?””
“She was rude.””
“What did she say?””
Victoria hesitated.
“She told me I couldn't put my hands on her.””
My father stared.
“So you struck her for asking you not to touch her?””
Victoria's lips tightened.
“I'm not going to be interrogated.””
“Then don't expect me to ignore what happened.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Mr. Bennett, I accept that our response could have been better, but I was under pressure.””
My father turned toward him.
“Pressure from whom?””
Marcus looked at Victoria.
“Mrs. Whitmore is a preferred guest.””
James spoke quietly.
“Sir, there's something else.””
My father glanced at him.
“What?””
James opened a file on his tablet.
“Mrs. Whitmore's room has been upgraded three times this month at Mr. Reed's authorization. There are also several complimentary services that were never approved.””
Marcus went pale.
Victoria immediately snapped.
“That's none of your business!””
James looked at her.
“It's hotel business.””
My father held out his hand.
“Show me.””
James passed him the tablet.
My father read the entries.
His jaw tightened.
Then he looked at Marcus.
“How long has this been happening?””
Marcus didn't answer.
My father handed the tablet back.
“James, I want the complete records.””
Victoria suddenly looked frightened.
But the worst was yet to come.
Because when my father examined the next page, he saw a name that made him stop.
May you like
*Jonathan Whitmore.*
And beneath it was a transaction that had nothing to do with a hotel room.
