Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Complimentary Suite

My father read the transaction twice.

Then he looked at James.

“Where did this payment come from?””

James swallowed.

“It was processed through the hotel's corporate events account.””

“How much?””

“Forty-eight thousand dollars.””

Victoria immediately stepped forward.

“That's a private business matter.””

My father didn't even look at her.

“Why was a corporate payment transferred to an account associated with your husband's company?””

Marcus's face had turned almost gray.

“Sir, I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

Marcus glanced toward the reception desk.

“Not here.””

My father placed the tablet on the marble counter.

“You didn't mind embarrassing my daughter here. Why should you be uncomfortable answering questions here?””

Several guests had gathered around the lobby.

A man in a navy suit had stopped beside the elevators. A family with two children stood near the restaurant entrance.

Nobody was leaving.

Victoria pulled out her phone.

“This is becoming absurd. I'm calling Jonathan.””

She pressed the screen and raised it to her ear.

“Jonathan? You need to come downstairs immediately. There's a situation.””

She paused.

“No, I'm serious. The Bennett family is making accusations.””

My father looked at her.

“Tell your husband to bring his records.””

Victoria covered the phone.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me.””

She turned away.

“Jonathan, just come down.””

The call ended.

Meanwhile, I sat in one of the velvet chairs near the lobby windows. Grace had finally fallen asleep again.

My father approached and crouched in front of me.

“Are you comfortable?””

“Yes.””

“Do you want to go home?””

I looked at him.

“Not yet.””

His eyebrows lifted.

“Are you sure?””

“I want to know why this happened. And I want the receptionist to know she doesn't have to be afraid of telling the truth.””

My father followed my gaze.

Emily was standing behind the desk, gripping a pen so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.

He nodded.

“Then we'll find out.””

He stood and walked toward her.

“Emily?””

The young woman looked startled.

“Yes, sir?””

“Did you see what happened?””

She glanced at Marcus.

He immediately interrupted.

“Emily, you don't need to involve yourself.””

My father turned.

“Don't answer for her.””

Marcus fell silent.

Emily looked down at the counter.

“I saw everything, sir.””

“Thank you. Tell me what happened.””

She took a shaky breath.

“Mrs. Whitmore walked up to Ms. Bennett.

She said she didn't belong here. Then she slapped her.””

Victoria scoffed.

“That's not what happened.””

Emily continued.

“Afterward, Mrs. Whitmore told Mr. Reed that Ms. Bennett had been harassing her.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“That's enough.””

Emily flinched.

I stood.

“Please don't threaten her.””

My father turned toward Marcus.

“Did you threaten this employee?””

“No, sir.””

Emily's voice trembled.

“He told me last month that if I ever embarrassed a preferred guest, I could lose my job.””

James looked furious.

“Marcus, is that true?””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“I was trying to maintain professional standards.””

My father shook his head.

“Professional standards don't include intimidating employees.””

Just then, the entrance doors opened.

A broad-shouldered man in a charcoal suit walked inside.

Jonathan Whitmore.

He was in his early fifties, with neatly combed dark hair and a gold watch that caught the light whenever he moved his hand.

“Victoria!””

She rushed toward him.

“Finally. Tell them this is outrageous.””

Jonathan looked around.

“What happened?””

Victoria pointed at me.

“This woman attacked me verbally, and now these people are treating me like a criminal.””

Jonathan looked at my father.

“Richard Bennett?””

My father nodded.

“Jonathan.””

The two men shook hands briefly.

Jonathan smiled, but his eyes were already moving toward the tablet.

“I'm sure there's been a misunderstanding.””

My father folded his arms.

“Your wife struck my daughter.””

Jonathan looked at Victoria.

“Is that true?””

“She was disrespectful.””

“Victoria.””

“She was standing there looking like she owned the place!””

My father said nothing.

Jonathan's expression changed slightly.

Then he looked at me.

“I'm sorry if there was an unfortunate exchange.””

I stared at him.

“An exchange?””

He nodded.

“I'm sure emotions were running high.””

“Your wife slapped me while I was holding my newborn.””

Jonathan looked uncomfortable.

“I'm not defending physical contact, but surely we can handle this discreetly.””

My father stepped closer.

“Why discreetly?””

Jonathan lowered his voice.

“Richard, our companies have done business for years. We don't need to turn a personal disagreement into a corporate issue.””

My father looked toward James.

“Show him the transaction.””

James handed over the tablet.

Jonathan glanced at the screen.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

“Where did you get this?””

“From our own records,” James replied.

Jonathan scrolled through the document.

The transfer was listed as a consulting payment to Whitmore Capital.

But the description underneath was unusual.

*Special accommodation and client relationship expenses.*

Jonathan's face hardened.

“This is an accounting matter.””

“Then your accountants can explain it,” my father said.

Victoria looked between them.

“Jonathan, what is he talking about?””

“Nothing you need to worry about.””

But her husband wasn't looking at her.

He was staring at the screen.

My father noticed.

“Is there something you want to tell me?””

Jonathan handed the tablet back.

“I'll have my office review this.””

“That's fine. Until then, no more complimentary services, no more unauthorized transactions, and no more special treatment.””

Victoria's mouth dropped open.

“Are you serious?””

My father ignored her.

“James, suspend Marcus's access to the financial authorization system while the records are reviewed. Put him on administrative leave pending an investigation.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You can't do that!””

James answered before my father could.

“Actually, we can.””

Victoria looked furious.

“This is unbelievable! Do you know how much money my husband brings into your business?””

My father finally turned toward her.

“Apparently, you've mistaken spending money for having authority over people.””

She opened her mouth.

He continued.

“You came into this hotel as a guest. You were entitled to courtesy, privacy, and fair treatment. You were not entitled to strike another person.””

Jonathan looked at his wife.

“Victoria, apologize.””

She stared at him.

“What?””

“Apologize.””

Her face twisted.

“I'm not apologizing to her.””

I looked at her.

“You don't have to.””

She seemed surprised.

I continued.

“But I want the police to have the footage, and I want a formal incident report.””

Jonathan sighed.

“Danielle, let's not make this bigger than it needs to be.””

My father answered for me.

“She has made her decision.””

He turned to James.

“Preserve every second of that footage. Send a copy to our legal department, and make sure the police can access it.””

James nodded.

“Understood.””

Victoria grabbed Jonathan's arm.

“Tell them to stop!””

Jonathan gently pulled away.

“Victoria, be quiet.””

Her eyes widened.

For the first time, her husband wasn't protecting her.

And then Emily approached us with another document.

“Mr. Bennett?””

My father turned.

“What is it?””

She placed a printed page on the counter.

“I found this in the system when I was checking the incident log. I thought you should see it.””

James took the paper.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked at my father.

“Sir, this isn't just about the complimentary suite.””

My father read the heading.

His expression changed completely.

The document was an internal email sent three days earlier.

The sender was Marcus Reed.

The recipient was Jonathan Whitmore.

And the subject line read:

*CONFIDENTIAL — DANIELLE BENNETT'S UPCOMING VISIT.*

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Dad?””

He didn't answer immediately.

He kept reading.

Then he slowly raised his eyes toward Jonathan.

“Why,” he asked quietly, “were you discussing my daughter's arrival before she even checked in?””

Jonathan's face went rigid.

Victoria looked at her husband.

“What email?””

My father turned the page.

May you like

At the bottom was one sentence that made the entire lobby go silent.

*If Richard Bennett's daughter visits the property, make sure she never discovers what happened to the original ownership records.*
