Chapter 8: The Secret Written in My Daughter's Medical Records
I couldn't speak.
Grace stirred against my shoulder.
My father noticed my expression immediately.
“What happened?””
I covered the phone.
“Daniel is outside.””
My father looked toward the entrance.
“Where?””
“I don't know. He says there's something I don't know about Grace.””
The lobby became unbearably quiet.
I put the phone back to my ear.
“Daniel, what does our daughter have to do with this?””
“Not over the phone.””
“Tell me now.””
He hesitated.
“Her birth records were accessed before she was born.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What?””
“Someone requested information from the hospital. They wanted to know whether the trust would become active after her birth.””
I looked at my father.
He was already reaching for his phone.
“Who accessed the records?”” I asked.
Daniel's voice dropped.
“Jonathan.””
My father heard the name.
He turned toward James.
“Contact the hospital's legal department. Preserve every access log connected to Danielle and Grace.””
Daniel continued.
“There's more. Someone tried to change Grace's beneficiary designation.””
My legs felt weak.
“Change it to whom?””
“I don't know.””
“Daniel!””
“I found the paperwork in Jonathan's office.””
I stared at the glass doors.
“Why were you in his office?””
Silence.
Then Daniel answered.
“Because I was working with him.””
My heart seemed to stop.
“You were working with Jonathan?””
“Yes.””
“For how long?””
“Eight months.””
I looked at my father.
He had heard enough to understand.
His expression became frighteningly still.
“Daniel,” I whispered, “what exactly did you do?””
“I thought I could reverse everything before you found out.””
“Reverse what?””
“The trust transfer. The forged documents. Everything.””
I felt tears running down my cheeks.
“You helped him forge my signature?””
“I didn't sign it.””
“But you knew.””
“Yes.””
“And you married me while knowing?””
His breathing grew heavier.
“Danielle, I love you.””
“That's not an answer.””
“I know.””
I closed my eyes.
“Where are you?””
“Across the street. I need to give you something.””
“What?””
“The missing page.””
I looked toward the blue folder.
“Do you have it?””
“Yes.””
“Bring it here.””
“I can't. Jonathan has people watching me.””
My father took the phone from my hand.
“Daniel, this is Richard.””
“Sir.””
“Bring the document to the hotel. We have security at the entrance.””
“It's not that simple.””
“Then explain.””
Daniel hesitated.
“There's a clause on that page. If Danielle sees it, everything changes.””
My father looked at me.
“What clause?””
Daniel whispered something.
My father went silent.
Then he handed the phone back.
“Danielle, I think you should hear this from him.””
I stared at the screen.
“Daniel, what does the clause say?””
He finally answered.
“Grace becomes the sole beneficiary of the trust if you die before the first anniversary of her birth.””
The world seemed to stop.
My father immediately reached for my arm.
“Danielle, sit down.””
I couldn't move.
“Why would that matter?””
“Because someone attempted to take out a life insurance policy connected to the trust.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Daniel's voice cracked.
“I found the application. It was never completed, but it named you as the insured person and listed Grace as the contingent beneficiary.””
I looked down at my daughter.
Her tiny hand had slipped outside her blanket.
I gently covered it.
“Who submitted the application?””
“Jonathan's company.””
My father took the phone again.
“Daniel, I want you here immediately.””
“I understand.””
“And don't contact Jonathan.””
“I won't.””
The call ended.
For several seconds, I could hear only the quiet sounds of the lobby.
Then my mother approached.
“Danielle, let me hold Grace.””
I instinctively stepped back.
Her face crumpled.
“Please, sweetheart.””
I looked at her.
“I don't know what to believe anymore.””
She lowered her arms.
“I understand.””
My father placed a hand on my shoulder.
“James will arrange a private security team for you and Grace.””
“I don't want to live like this.””
“I know.””
“I just wanted to bring my daughter to a pediatric appointment and wait for a ride.””
My father looked at the red mark still visible on my cheek.
“I know, sweetheart.””
A few minutes later, the police arrived.
Two officers spoke with James and reviewed the footage of the assault. Another officer began collecting the documents.
Jonathan was still near the entrance.
When he saw the officers, he tried to leave.
“Sir,” one officer called, “we need to speak with you.””
Jonathan stopped.
“This is a civil matter.””
“We'll determine that after reviewing the evidence.””
Victoria stood beside the revolving doors.
She looked at Jonathan.
“I'm leaving.””
He turned sharply.
“You're not going anywhere.””
She lifted her chin.
“You don't get to tell me what to do anymore.””
Then she walked out.
Marcus was escorted to a private office to provide a formal statement. Evelyn agreed to cooperate with investigators.
My mother sat alone near the fireplace.
I couldn't bring myself to look at her.
Then the hotel doors opened again.
Daniel walked inside.
He looked exhausted.
His shirt was wrinkled, his tie was loose, and there was a small cut near his eyebrow.
He carried a blue envelope.
When he saw me, he stopped.
“Danielle.””
I didn't move.
He approached slowly.
“Is Grace okay?””
I looked at him.
“You don't get to ask that as if nothing happened.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
He placed the envelope on the table.
“Everything is in here.””
My father picked it up.
Daniel looked at me.
“I never wanted you hurt.””
“Did you know Victoria was going to slap me?””
His face changed.
“What?””
“Did you arrange for me to be humiliated in that lobby?””
“No. Absolutely not.””
“Then why did you know I'd be there?””
He looked down.
“I received a message from Jonathan. He said you were visiting the hotel.””
“Why?””
“Because he wanted to know whether the trust had activated.””
I stared at him.
“You told him where I was?””
Daniel nodded.
I felt something inside me break.
My father opened the envelope.
Inside was the missing page, several financial records, and a printed email.
He read the email.
Then he looked at Daniel.
“Who is this payment going to?””
Daniel's face went white.
I stepped closer.
“What payment?””
My father turned the paper around.
A transfer of $250,000 had been made to a private account.
The recipient's name was clearly printed.
*Daniel Bennett.*
I looked at my husband.
“You told me you never signed anything.””
“I didn't.””
“Then why did you receive a quarter of a million dollars?””
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was trying to get you out of this.””
My father placed the paper down.
“That's not what the transaction description says.””
I read it.
*Final consideration for beneficiary cooperation.*
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you sell my inheritance?””
He opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, my father turned to the last page of the envelope.
And his expression changed.
“Danielle,” he said quietly.
“You need to see this.””
It was a photograph of Daniel and Jonathan shaking hands.
But they weren't outside an office.
They were standing in a hospital corridor.
May you like
The date was the night Grace was born.
And Daniel was holding a document with my signature on it.
