Chapter 10: The Woman Behind the Plan
The voice coming from Denise’s phone made everyone in the room stop breathing.
“Did you get Maya ready for me?””
For a moment, nobody moved.
Not Marcus.
Not Evelyn.
Not even Maya.
The only sound was the quiet hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.
Marcus stared at Denise.
“Put the phone on speaker.””
Denise’s hand shook.
The voice on the other end continued.
“Denise? Are you there?””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Answer her.””
Denise looked terrified.
“I…”
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“Answer.””
Slowly, Denise lifted the phone.
“She’s here.””
A pause.
Then the voice changed.
“Who is with you?””
Marcus leaned toward the phone.
“Me.””
Silence.
Then:
“Marcus.””
Hearing his name from that voice made his stomach turn.
Not because he missed it.
Because he remembered everything he had spent years trying to forget.
“You’ve been watching my daughter?””
The woman on the phone didn’t answer immediately.
Finally:
“I was trying to see her.””
“Without telling me?””
“You wouldn’t have allowed it.””
Marcus laughed quietly.
“No. I wouldn’t have allowed a stranger to appear in my daughter’s life after ten years.””
“I’m not a stranger.””
Marcus looked at Maya.
His daughter was standing behind him.
Confused.
Afraid.
“She doesn’t know you.””
The woman’s voice softened.
“I know.””
“Then you know what you did.””
A pause.
“I know what I lost.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
The anger was there.
But underneath it was something else.
A question that had followed him for a decade.
Why?
“Why did you leave?””
The room became still.
Even Evelyn looked up.
The woman on the phone was silent for several seconds.
Then she answered.
“Because someone made sure I believed I had no choice.””
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
No answer.
“Who?””
The woman breathed out.
“Your mother.””
Everyone looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn’s face went pale.
“No.””
Marcus turned.
“Mom?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“She’s lying.””
The voice on the phone became sharper.
“You told him?””
Evelyn stepped back.
Marcus looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Maya’s mother said:
“Ask your mother why I disappeared.””
Marcus stared.
“Mom?””
Evelyn looked away.
That was enough.
Marcus felt something inside him collapse.
“Tell me.””
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I defended you.””
He looked at the dining room.
“At this table. In front of everyone.””
His eyes returned to her.
“And you knew.””
Evelyn whispered.
“I was trying to protect him.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at Maya.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Evelyn flinched.
The woman on the phone spoke again.
“She told me you hated me.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
“She said you blamed me for everything.””
“That’s not true.””
“I know that now.””
Marcus stared.
“When?””
“When I found out she lied.””
The room went quiet.
Maya looked at Marcus.
“Dad…”
He immediately turned.
“I’m okay.””
But he wasn’t.
Because every piece of his life suddenly had a question mark attached to it.
His mother.
His sister.
His daughter’s mother.
Everyone had been hiding something.
Everyone except Maya.
And she was the one who suffered.
Marcus looked at Denise.
“How long have you been working with her?””
Denise lowered her head.
“A few months.””
“Why?””
Denise swallowed.
“Because she convinced me Maya deserved to know her mother.””
Marcus stared.
“And the guardianship?””
Denise looked away.
“That wasn’t supposed to happen.””
“Then why did you help?””
“I didn’t know what the papers really said.””
Marcus almost smiled.
Nobody knew.
Everyone was innocent.
Everyone was just helping.
Everyone was sorry.
And somehow Maya was still the one sitting on the floor.
Daniel stepped forward.
“We need to separate the emotional issues from the legal ones.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Meaning?””
“Meaning someone manipulated the guardianship process.””
Daniel looked at the phone.
“And now we need to find out who.””
The woman on the phone spoke quietly.
“I can tell you.””
Marcus lifted the phone.
“Then tell me.””
A pause.
“I didn’t request custody.””
Marcus frowned.
“We know.””
“No.””
Her voice became serious.
“You don’t understand.””
Everyone listened.
“The custody request was created using my name.””
Marcus looked at the papers.
“Someone forged your request?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The answer came softly.
“Because they needed me to look like the villain.””
Marcus felt cold.
“Who benefits from that?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel looked down at the documents.
His face changed.
“What?””
Marcus noticed.
Daniel pointed to a section.
“There.””
Marcus walked closer.
A line he hadn’t noticed before.
A hidden authorization code.
Daniel whispered.
“This isn’t a family services code.””
“What is it?””
Daniel looked at him.
“It’s a private legal firm.””
Marcus stared.
“Which firm?””
Daniel turned the page.
And read the name.
Marcus recognized it.
Because it belonged to someone he trusted.
Someone who had been helping his family for years.
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“The Carter Family Trust Office.””
Marcus went still.
His own family’s legal office.
The one his father created.
The one Evelyn controlled.
The one Marcus had never questioned.
Then his phone buzzed.
A new message.
One sentence.
*You finally found the right document. Now ask your mother what happened the night Maya was born.*
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
She looked terrified.

And for the first time, he realized the guardianship papers were never the beginning.
They were only the latest chapter.
