Chapter 7: The Mother Maya Never Knew
Marcus heard the words.
But his mind refused to accept them.
“She’s been trying to get custody back.””
The sentence echoed through the dining room.
Maya stood beside him, frozen.
Her small hand was still wrapped around his jacket.
“Mom?”” she whispered.
Marcus looked at his sister.
Her face was full of regret.
Then he looked at Evelyn.
His mother looked down.
That hurt more than anything.
Because silence from Evelyn was becoming an answer.
“Mom,” Marcus said quietly.
Evelyn didn’t look up.
“How long?””
No response.
“How long have you known?””
Her lips trembled.
“Marcus…”
“How long?””
The entire room waited.
Finally, Evelyn whispered.
“Six months.””
Marcus stepped back.
Six months.
Six months of phone calls.
Six months of trusting her.
Six months of Maya sleeping in the same house with someone who knew a secret that could change everything.
“You knew Maya’s mother was looking for her?””
Evelyn nodded slowly.
Marcus looked at Maya.
His daughter was staring at the floor.
Trying to understand a conversation she should never have had to hear.
“You let her think she was abandoned.””
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“I didn’t know what else to do.””
Marcus’s voice became colder.
“You could have told me.””
“You would have gone after her.””
“Yes.””
“Exactly.””
The answer shocked him.
Evelyn wiped her face.
“And I was afraid.””
Marcus stared.
“Afraid of what?””
“That you would forget everything she did.””
The room went silent.
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
His sister stepped forward.
“Marcus…”
He looked at her.
“No. Everyone keeps saying I don’t understand. So explain.””
His sister took a deep breath.
“Maya’s mother didn’t just leave.””
Marcus looked at Maya.
Then back.
“What happened?””
Nobody answered immediately.
The silence was painful.
Finally, Evelyn spoke.
“She left because she was scared.””
Marcus laughed once.
A broken sound.
“Scared?””
He shook his head.
“She walked away from her child.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
His voice cracked.
“I held Maya the night she cried because she didn’t understand why her mother wasn’t coming back.””
Maya looked up.
Marcus immediately softened.
“I’m sorry, baby.””
But Maya didn’t look away.
“Did she want me?””
The question destroyed the room.
Marcus looked at his daughter.
Ten years old.
Standing in the middle of a family crisis she never asked for.
His sister covered her mouth.
Evelyn looked away.
Marcus knelt.
“Maya.””
She looked at him.
“Your mother leaving was never because of you.””
“But she left.””
Marcus swallowed.
“Yes.””
The honesty mattered.
“But adults make choices. Sometimes bad ones. Sometimes choices they regret.””
Maya’s eyes filled.
“Does she want me now?””
Marcus didn’t know how to answer.
Before he could, the front door closed.
Everyone turned.
Daniel looked toward the entrance.
“Is she here?””
Marcus looked at his sister.
His sister nodded.
“She followed me.””
The room became tense.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
A woman’s voice.
“Marcus?””
Every muscle in his body froze.
He knew that voice.
Not because he heard it recently.
Because he spent years trying to forget it.
Maya turned toward the sound.
The woman slowly entered the dining room.
She looked older than Marcus remembered.
Her hair was darker at the roots, lighter at the ends.
Her eyes carried years of guilt.
She looked at Maya.
And stopped.
“Maya.””
The little girl stared.
No words came out.
Marcus stepped in front of her.
“Don’t.””
The woman flinched.
“Marcus, please.””
“No.””
His voice was controlled.
But barely.
“You don’t get to walk in here after ten years and say her name like nothing happened.””
The woman’s eyes filled.
“I know.””
“You don’t know.””
“I do.””
“No, you don’t.””
Marcus pointed toward Maya.
“She grew up without you.””
The woman looked devastated.
“I know.””
“She thought she wasn’t wanted.””
The woman closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“She cried for you.””
A tear fell down her cheek.
“I know.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Then why?””
The woman looked at Maya.
And for the first time, Marcus saw something in her face.
Not excuses.
Pain.
“I was trying to protect her.””
Maya whispered.
“From what?””
The woman looked at her.
And the question nearly broke her.
“From me.””
Nobody spoke.
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
She looked toward Evelyn.
Then at the legal papers.
“It means your mother wasn’t the only person hiding something.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“What?””
She reached into her bag.
Pulled out a folder.
And placed it on the table.
“I didn’t come here to take Maya.””
Marcus didn’t believe her.
“Then why are you here?””
The woman looked at the documents.
“Because I found out someone was using my name.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What do you mean?””
She opened the folder.
Inside were copies of messages.
Emails.
Legal forms.
Marcus looked at the first page.
Then froze.
Because the person contacting Maya’s mother wasn’t Evelyn.
It wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone Marcus trusted.
Someone who had been standing beside him all night.
May you like
And the name was written clearly.
Andre.
