Chapter 8: The Family Betrayal

The room exploded into silence.

Marcus looked at Andre.

Andre’s face had gone pale.

“No,” Andre whispered.

Marcus slowly picked up the document.

“Your name is here.””

Andre shook his head.

“I can explain.””

Marcus stared.

“Everyone says that.””

Andre stepped forward.

“Marcus, listen.””

“No.””

His voice was calm now.

That was worse.

“You watched my daughter sit on the floor.””

Andre looked down.

“You watched everyone pretend nothing was wrong.””

“I didn’t know—”

“You knew enough.””

Andre stopped.

The relatives at the table looked uncomfortable.

Maya moved closer to Marcus.

The woman from the hallway watched silently.

Marcus looked at the papers again.

There were dates.

Messages.

Conversations.

Andre had been communicating with Maya’s mother.

But something didn’t make sense.

Marcus looked up.

“You contacted her.””

Andre swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Andre looked at Evelyn.

Then away.

Marcus noticed.

“Why do you keep looking at my mother?””

Andre stayed silent.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

Finally, Andre whispered.

“Because she asked me to.””

Everyone turned.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

Evelyn looked exhausted.

“I asked him to find her.””

Marcus stared.

“You?””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because I didn’t know how to tell you.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That’s not true.””

Evelyn looked hurt.

“What?””

“You didn’t hide a phone call.””

He held up the guardianship papers.

“You built an entire secret.””

Evelyn looked at Maya.

“I was trying to protect her.””

Maya’s voice was quiet.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

The words hit harder than yelling.

Because she was right.

Everyone had been using protection as an excuse.

Marcus crouched beside her.

“You’re right.””

Maya looked at him.

“I’m sorry you had to hear all of this.””

She nodded.

The woman from the hallway stepped closer.

“My name is Lena.””

Maya looked at her.

Lena stopped.

“I know you don’t know me.””

Maya stayed quiet.

“But I have thought about you every day.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“Don’t.””

Lena looked at him.

“I deserve that.””

“You deserve more than that.””

Her eyes lowered.

“Yes.””

Marcus expected anger.

He expected excuses.

But Lena didn’t defend herself.

That confused him.

“I made mistakes,” she said.

Maya looked at her.

“Why did you leave?””

The question was simple.

But everyone felt the weight.

Lena took a breath.

“Because I was sick.””

Marcus frowned.

“You never told me that.””

“Because I didn’t want you to see me like that.””

“What does that mean?””

Lena looked at Maya.

“It means I was not safe to be around.””

Maya’s face changed.

“Was I bad?””

Lena immediately shook her head.

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“You were the best thing that ever happened to me.””

A tear rolled down Maya’s cheek.

Marcus watched.

He had imagined this moment many times.

The day Maya met her mother again.

But he never imagined it would happen surrounded by legal documents and accusations.

Daniel cleared his throat.

“There’s something we still need to resolve.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel pointed to the documents.

“The guardianship transfer.””

Everyone went quiet.

Lena looked at the papers.

“That wasn’t my request.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

Lena shook her head.

“I requested visitation.””

“Not custody?””

“No.””

She looked at Maya.

“I know I don’t deserve to suddenly become her mother again.””

Maya looked confused.

“Then why did everyone say you wanted me?””

Lena looked toward Evelyn.

Nobody spoke.

Marcus noticed.

“Mom.””

Evelyn looked away.

“What aren’t you telling us?””

Before Evelyn could answer, Daniel picked up one of the documents.

“There’s a second signature.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

Daniel turned the page.

“This request was changed after submission.””

He pointed.

“This person added a custody transfer clause.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at the signature.

Then slowly raised his eyes.

“It was authorized by someone using your legal information.””

Marcus froze.

“My information?””

“Yes.””

“Meaning?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Someone had access to your identity documents.””

The room went cold.

Marcus looked around.

His family.

His home.

People he trusted.

Someone had planned this carefully.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

He opened it.

One sentence.

*Stop digging, or Maya learns the rest of the truth.*

Marcus’s face changed.

Lena saw it.

“What happened?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because beneath the message was a photo.

A photo of Maya.

Taken that same night.

May you like

Inside the house.

While everyone was sitting at the dinner table.
