Chapter 4: The Voice From the Past

Marcus couldn’t move.

The phone was still pressed against his ear, but for several seconds, he forgot how to breathe.

His sister.

The word alone felt impossible.

His sister had been gone from his life for years.

Not dead.

Not unreachable.

Just gone.

A person who disappeared after the biggest family argument Marcus had ever witnessed.

A person Evelyn refused to mention.

A person whose name became a forbidden subject inside their family.

“Maya, stay with me,” Marcus whispered.

He kept one hand on his daughter’s shoulder while holding the phone with the other.

Across the kitchen, Evelyn stood frozen.

For the first time in Marcus’s memory, his mother looked powerless.

“Marcus?”” the voice on the phone said.

He swallowed.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then a shaky breath.

“I knew you would ask that before anything else.””

Marcus looked at the blue envelope on the counter.

“You’re the reason my mother is trying to transfer my daughter’s guardianship?””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Marcus turned sharply.

“No.””

The single word stopped everyone.

“No more secrets.””

The relatives at the table exchanged uncomfortable glances.

His sister’s voice became quieter.

“She’s right about one thing.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

“She didn’t do it because she hates Maya.””

Evelyn looked away.

Marcus felt anger rising again.

“Then why?””

The voice on the phone hesitated.

“Because she thinks Maya is in danger.””

Marcus stared.

The anger faded into confusion.

“What are you talking about?””

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“Hang up.””

Marcus ignored her.

“Tell me.””

His sister took a breath.

“Not over the phone.””

“That’s not good enough.””

“It has to be.””

Marcus looked around the room.

His daughter.

His mother.

The document.

The entire family watching him like they were waiting for something to happen.

“Why now?”” he asked.

“Because you weren’t supposed to find those papers.””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“What does that mean?””

The line became quiet.

Then his sister said something that made his stomach drop.

“Because the papers were never meant for you to see.””

Marcus stared at the guardianship form.

“What?””

“Marcus, listen carefully. Your mother didn’t create that document because she wanted Maya gone.””

“Then why?””

Another pause.

“Because someone else was trying to take control.””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“Who?””

His sister didn’t answer immediately.

That silence told him everything.

Someone.

Someone close.

Someone inside the family.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Who?””

Before she could respond, Evelyn walked forward and reached for the phone.

Marcus stepped back.

“Don’t.””

Her face tightened.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

“I’ve heard that all night.””

“Because you’re acting without understanding.””

Marcus looked at Maya.

His daughter was watching every expression, every movement.

She had spent weeks being afraid.

And nobody noticed.

“What did you tell her?”” Marcus asked.

Evelyn looked at Maya.

Then away.

“Marcus…”

“What did you tell my daughter?””

Evelyn’s voice softened.

“I told her what I thought she needed to hear.””

Marcus stared.

“That’s not an answer.””

Maya quietly spoke.

“She told me Dad was tired.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked down.

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“She said you wanted things to be easier.””

Marcus felt something break inside him.

He had spent every day working harder because he wanted Maya to have a better life.

And somehow, someone had convinced his daughter that his love had limits.

He turned back to Evelyn.

“Why would you do that?””

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“Because you don’t see what’s happening.””

“What’s happening?””

She looked at Maya.

Then at the relatives.

“Not here.””

Marcus almost laughed.

“Not here?””

He held up the document.

“You brought legal papers into this house.””

His voice became louder.

“You made my daughter eat on the floor in front of people who knew.””

Several relatives looked down.

Marcus noticed.

The betrayal was bigger than he thought.

His sister spoke again through the phone.

“Marcus.””

He looked at the screen.

“I need you to leave with Maya.””

Evelyn immediately reacted.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

His sister continued.

“Do not let her stay there tonight.””

The warning made the room colder.

Marcus picked up Maya’s jacket from the chair.

“Why?””

His sister’s answer came quietly.

“Because the person who requested that guardianship transfer wasn’t your mother.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Evelyn’s face went pale.

Marcus slowly looked at the document.

The signature section.

The covered name.

The hidden page.

His voice dropped.

“Then whose signature is on this?””

Nobody answered.

Then the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood in the doorway.

A man Marcus didn’t recognize.

He held a leather folder.

And he looked directly at Maya.

“I’m sorry,” the man said.

“But I’m here for the guardianship meeting.””

Marcus stepped in front of his daughter.

The man looked surprised.

“Mr. Carter?””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“Yes?””

The stranger tightened his grip on the folder.

“I think there has been a misunderstanding.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Then explain why you know my daughter’s name.””

May you like

The man opened his folder.

And pulled out another blue envelope.
