Chapter 12: The Truth Under the Signature

Marcus stared at the screen.

The name.

His mother’s name.

Evelyn Carter.

The room blurred around him.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

Nobody responded.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I’m sorry.””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“Tell me this isn’t real.””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

That hurt more than the document.

“Mom.””

She closed her eyes.

“I signed it.””

Maya gasped.

Marcus stepped back.

“You signed something pretending to be me?””

“No.””

“Then explain.””

Evelyn looked broken.

“I signed permission for an investigation.””

Marcus shook his head.

“This says I requested guardianship transfer.””

“I didn’t know it would become that.””

“You didn’t know?””

His voice rose.

“You signed legal documents involving my daughter without knowing?””

Evelyn started crying.

“I was trying to stop something worse.””

Marcus stared.

“What could possibly be worse?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lena spoke.

“There is.””

Everyone looked at her.

She slowly stepped closer.

“The person behind this wasn’t trying to take Maya from Marcus.””

Marcus frowned.

“Then what?””

Lena looked at Maya.

“They were trying to remove every adult who could protect her.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at the documents again.

“The complaint.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

Daniel pointed.

“The complaint was never about custody.””

He scanned the page.

“It was about creating a legal emergency.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because during an emergency review, temporary decisions can happen quickly.””

Marcus felt cold.

“Temporary decisions like?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Changing where a child stays.””

Maya grabbed Marcus’s hand.

He immediately held it.

“No one is taking you.””

But inside, he knew something.

Someone had been trying.

For months.

The pieces connected.

The photos.

The fake complaint.

The guardianship papers.

The hidden signatures.

The family secrets.

Someone had built a trap.

And everyone in the house had been too busy protecting their own secrets to see it.

Marcus looked at Denise.

“You were contacted by someone.””

Denise nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

She looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

“Don’t lie.””

“I’m not.””

She pulled out her phone.

“I never saved the number.””

Marcus took it.

The messages were there.

Hundreds.

Instructions.

Warnings.

Requests.

He scrolled.

Then stopped.

One message stood out.

*Make sure Marcus believes his mother betrayed him. That will break the family apart.*

Marcus looked up.

“Someone wanted us fighting.””

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.””

Marcus looked around.

“And while we were fighting, they moved forward.””

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Marcus answered.

“Hello?””

A voice spoke.

Calm.

Confident.

“You found the paperwork.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“Who is this?””

“You already know.””

“No, I don’t.””

The person laughed softly.

“You know exactly who I am.””

Marcus looked around.

Nobody spoke.

The voice continued.

“Your family has always been predictable.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“What do you want?””

“I want what was taken from me.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Maya.””

Marcus’s grip tightened.

“No.””

The voice continued.

“You think you saved her.””

Marcus stepped away from everyone.

“You’re not getting near my daughter.””

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

The voice became colder.

“That girl was never supposed to belong to you.””

Marcus froze.

Behind him, Maya whispered:

“Dad?””

The voice continued.

“She was supposed to be mine.””

Marcus’s heart pounded.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then the person answered.

And Marcus felt the world stop.

Because it was a name he recognized.

A name connected to his family.

A name that explained everything.

The caller said:

“I’m the person your father left everything to.””

Marcus went silent.

His father.

Dead for years.

The family inheritance.

The trust.

The legal office.

The missing pieces.

Then the caller delivered the final blow.

“And Marcus…”

A pause.

“Your daughter was never in your father’s will.””

Marcus stared at Evelyn.

Her face went pale.

Because she knew exactly what that meant.

May you like

The caller continued:

“She was in mine.””
