Chapter 6: The Person Who Knew Too Much

Marcus stared at the photograph.

The room disappeared.

The voices disappeared.

All he could see was the signature.

A name.

A name belonging to someone who had been sitting only a few feet away.

Someone who watched Maya eat on the floor.

Someone who said nothing.

Someone who let Marcus believe the entire family was unaware.

“Marcus?”” Daniel asked.

No response.

Maya touched his arm.

“Dad, what happened?””

Marcus locked his phone.

“Nothing.””

But his voice betrayed him.

Maya knew.

Children always knew.

“Someone did something bad?””

Marcus looked at her.

He wanted to lie.

He wanted to say everything was okay.

But he had already learned what happened when adults hid the truth.

He knelt down.

“I’m figuring something out.””

She nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

The trust in her eyes almost broke him.

Marcus stood again.

He looked around the table.

Everyone avoided his gaze.

Except one person.

His cousin Andre.

The man who had spoken earlier.

The man who suggested everyone calm down.

The man whose signature was in the photo.

Marcus walked toward him.

“Andre.””

Andre looked up.

“What?””

Marcus placed his phone on the table.

The photo was visible.

Andre’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But Marcus saw it.

“What is this?””

Andre didn’t answer.

Evelyn immediately stepped in.

“Marcus.””

“No.””

His voice was sharp.

“Not this time.””

He pointed at the phone.

“Why is his name on a document about my daughter?””

Andre looked uncomfortable.

“I can explain.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“That’s what everyone says.””

Andre stood.

“It wasn’t what you think.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

Andre glanced at Evelyn.

That movement was enough.

Marcus noticed.

“You looked at her.””

Andre sighed.

“Because she knows the full story.””

Marcus turned.

“Mom.””

Evelyn said nothing.

Marcus’s patience broke.

“No more.””

The room shook with his voice.

“No more half-truths. No more protecting people who won’t protect my daughter.””

Maya stood behind him, holding the edge of his jacket.

Evelyn looked at her.

Her expression softened.

For a moment, Marcus saw the grandmother he remembered.

The woman who baked cookies with Maya.

The woman who taught her family recipes.

Then he remembered the dinner floor.

And the blue envelope.

“I never wanted her hurt,” Evelyn whispered.

Marcus looked at her.

“But she was.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Andre spoke quietly.

“Marcus, you need to understand why this started.””

“Then explain.””

Andre hesitated.

“The complaint wasn’t about you.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

“It was about someone else.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“That’s not what the paperwork says.””

Andre nodded.

“Because the paperwork was changed.””

Marcus looked between them.

“Changed by who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“I found something.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

She walked slowly toward the counter.

She picked up a small envelope hidden behind a stack of plates.

Not blue.

White.

She handed it to Marcus.

“This arrived two weeks ago.””

He didn’t take it immediately.

“Why didn’t you show me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

The honesty surprised him.

“Afraid of what?””

Evelyn looked at Maya.

“Of losing her.””

Marcus stared.

“You were afraid of losing Maya?””

“Yes.””

“Then why would you push her away?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“Because I thought if I did nothing, someone else would take her.””

Marcus opened the white envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

A picture of Maya.

Taken outside their house.

Without their knowledge.

His heart dropped.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten sentence.

Marcus read it.

Then his face went completely still.

*You can protect her from the world, but not from her own family.*

A sound came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

The front door was still open.

Someone was standing outside.

A woman.

Older.

Familiar.

Marcus’s sister.

The woman on the phone.

She stepped into the house slowly.

Her eyes immediately went to Maya.

Then to Marcus.

“I’m sorry I waited so long.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You knew?””

She looked at Evelyn.

Then back at him.

“Yes.””

His voice dropped.

“Knew what?””

His sister’s eyes filled with tears.

“That Maya’s mother didn’t disappear.””

The room went silent.

Marcus stopped breathing.

Because for ten years, he believed Maya’s mother had left.

He believed he was raising his daughter alone.

But his sister’s next words changed everything.

“She’s been trying to get custody back.””

Maya looked up.

“Mom?””

Marcus felt the world tilt.

May you like

His sister stepped closer.

“And she’s the one who started this entire guardianship battle.””
