Chapter 13: The Inheritance Nobody Knew About

Marcus stood completely still.

The voice on the phone had disappeared.

But the words remained.

*Your daughter was in mine.*

He looked at Evelyn.

She looked like she had been holding her breath for ten years.

“Mom,” Marcus said quietly.

She didn’t answer.

“Tell me.””

Evelyn looked at Maya.

Then at the blue envelope sitting on the table.

Then back at her son.

“I was hoping you would never find out this way.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“Find out what?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Marcus, we need to understand what this means.””

But Marcus didn’t look away from Evelyn.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

“I need my mother to tell me.””

Evelyn sat down.

Her hands shook.

“Your father created the Carter Family Trust before he died.””

Marcus nodded.

“I know.””

“No.””

She looked up.

“You know about the money.””

A pause.

“You don’t know about the conditions.””

Marcus frowned.

“What conditions?””

Evelyn looked toward Maya.

“The trust was created to protect the Carter family.””

Marcus felt anger rising.

“My daughter is not an asset.””

“I know.””

“Then why does someone think they can claim her?””

Evelyn swallowed.

“Because your father left a clause.””

The room became silent.

“What clause?””

Evelyn whispered:

“A bloodline clause.””

Marcus stared.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does if you know what your father believed.””

Marcus shook his head.

“My father loved Maya.””

“Yes.””

“Then why would he create something like this?””

Evelyn looked down.

“Because he was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She hesitated.

“Of losing everything.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“So he controlled everyone after he died too?””

Evelyn didn’t defend him.

That told Marcus enough.

Lena stepped forward.

“What does this have to do with me?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Everything.””

Lena went quiet.

Marcus looked between them.

“Explain.””

Evelyn took a deep breath.

“Your father believed the family name mattered more than anything. When Maya was born, he changed the trust.””

Marcus frowned.

“He changed it?””

“Yes.””

“To include Maya?””

Evelyn nodded.

“But not directly.””

The words made Marcus uneasy.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“Tell him.””

Daniel opened the documents again.

“The trust names a child beneficiary.””

Marcus looked at Maya.

“Her.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Daniel turned the page.

“The trust requires a legal guardian approved by the family trust office.””

Marcus felt anger.

“So this was never about custody.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“It was about control of the trust.””

Marcus looked at the phone.

The caller.

The person claiming Maya was theirs.

“Who is the beneficiary?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lena spoke.

“Marcus.””

He looked at her.

She looked terrified.

“I know who.””

Everyone turned.

Lena’s voice trembled.

“Your father had another child.””

Silence.

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Lena continued.

“I found out years ago.””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“Mom?””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

The room felt smaller.

“You knew I had a sibling?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Your father kept it secret.””

“Why?””

“Because he was ashamed.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at the documents.

“No, that’s impossible.””

The caller’s words returned.

*I’m the person your father left everything to.*

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Who is he?””

Daniel hesitated.

“You need to hear this from the person themselves.””

Marcus’s phone buzzed.

A message.

A location.

A name.

He opened it.

The message contained only one sentence.

*You deserve to know who your father chose over you.*

Then a name appeared.

Marcus read it.

His face changed.

Because he had heard that name before.

Not from family.

Not from documents.

From his father’s old journals.

The hidden child.

The one nobody spoke about.

The one who believed the Carter family belonged to him.

Marcus whispered:

“Adrian.””

Evelyn looked shocked.

“You know?””

Marcus stared.

“I saw the name once.””

His eyes lifted.

“In Dad’s office.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked concerned.

“Who is Adrian?””

Marcus answered quietly.

“My father’s son.””

Maya looked up.

“Does that mean he’s my uncle?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Yes.””

The word felt impossible.

Then the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood outside.

Tall.

Well-dressed.

Older than Marcus.

But with the same eyes.

The same sharp expression.

The same Carter family resemblance.

He stepped inside.

“I was wondering when you would finally say my name.””

Marcus froze.

The man looked at Maya.

Then smiled slightly.

“I’m Adrian.””

Nobody moved.

Adrian looked at the blue envelope.

“The transfer papers.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You did this?””

Adrian looked surprised.

“You think I wanted to hurt her?””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“You used my daughter.””

Adrian’s smile disappeared.

“I protected what belonged to me.””

Marcus stepped between him and Maya.

“She is not property.””

Adrian looked at him.

“That’s where you’re wrong.””

He reached into his coat.

Pulled out a folder.

And placed it on the table.

“Your father didn’t leave Maya money.””

May you like

He looked directly at Marcus.

“He left her the entire future of this family.””
