Chapter 13: The Truth My Mother Died Protecting
The phone kept ringing.
Nobody moved.
The apartment was completely dark except for the faint glow of the screen in my hand.
Marcus.
His name stared back at me.
Like a warning.
Like a threat.
My father stepped closer.
“Don’t answer.””
Lily looked terrified.
“Please.””
I looked at her.
“You know what he wants.””
She nodded.
“He wants to control the story.””
The phone continued ringing.
Five seconds.
Ten seconds.
Then it stopped.
A message appeared.
I know you found her.
Another message.
You deserve the truth.
Then one final message.
Ask Lily what Elena made her promise.
I looked at Lily.
She closed her eyes.
Because she already knew.
“What promise?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily whispered:
“To protect you.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Me?””
She nodded.
“Your mother knew Marcus would come after you.””
My father stepped forward.
“Why?””
Lily looked at him.
“Because Maya was the evidence.””
The room went silent.
“Evidence of what?”” I asked.
Lily walked toward the window.
Outside, the city moved like nothing had happened.
Like my entire life hadn’t just cracked open.
“Marcus built his entire operation around one idea.””
She turned back.
“That children could be erased.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“He changed records. Names. Birth certificates. Adoption files.””
My stomach turned.
“He made people disappear.””
Lily nodded.
“Not physically.””
A pause.
“Legally.””
My father clenched his fists.
“And Elena found out.””
“Yes.””
Lily looked at me.
“Your mother discovered that Marcus had changed my records.””
I swallowed.
“But why me?””
Lily answered quietly.
“Because when Elena found me, she also found something else.””
“What?””
She reached into a drawer.
She pulled out a small folder.
Inside were documents.
My name.
My birth records.
My original hospital file.
I stared.
“What is this?””
Lily looked at Vanessa.
“Tell her.””
Vanessa froze.
“I…”
“Tell her.””
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
She slowly sat down.
“I found out before Elena died.””
My father looked at her.
“Found out what?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“That Marcus wasn’t just connected to Lily.””
Her voice shook.
“He was connected to you.””
I already knew.
But hearing it again hurt.
“Why did my mother hide that?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because she believed Marcus would use you.””
“To do what?””
“Continue what he started.””
The words chilled me.
I opened the folder.
The first document was a DNA report.
Not between me and Marcus.
Between Marcus and Elena.
The result was shocking.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Lily answered.
“Your mother discovered Marcus wasn’t the person he claimed to be.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
“He lied about his identity.””
My father looked confused.
“What are you saying?””
Lily pointed to the report.
“Marcus Hale wasn’t his real name.””
The room went silent.
“What was it?””
Lily looked at the paper.
“Marcus Reynolds.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Vanessa reacted.
She covered her mouth.
“You know him?””
Lily looked at her.
“You know him better than anyone.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Lily’s voice hardened.
“Because he was the reason Elena stopped trusting you.””
Vanessa looked destroyed.
“I didn’t know.””
“You knew enough.””
The argument stopped when another sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Everyone froze.
My father moved toward the door.
“Stay behind me.””
The footsteps stopped.
A shadow appeared beneath the door.
Then a voice.
Not Marcus.
Someone else.
“Lily.””
She went pale.
“No.””
The door handle moved.
My father locked it.
But the person outside didn’t force it.
They just spoke.
“Your mother wanted you safe.””
Lily whispered:
“Who is that?””
Nobody answered.
The voice continued.
“But she made one mistake.””
A pause.
“She trusted the wrong person.””
My eyes moved toward Vanessa.
The stranger outside continued.
“Ask Vanessa where she was the night Elena died.””
Vanessa’s face went white.
My father turned.
“What?””
Vanessa didn’t speak.
The silence was enough.
My father stepped away.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
“I can explain.””
But before she could, the door opened.
Not from force.
From a key.
A key that only someone who belonged there would have.
The person standing outside wasn’t Marcus.
It was an older woman.
Holding a photograph.
She looked directly at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“Elena never told you the truth about your birth.””
