Chapter 6: The Woman in the Photograph
Nobody spoke.
The photograph sat in my hand.
Heavy.
Impossible.
Vanessa stared at it like she was seeing her own face for the first time.
My father looked between us.
“Maya…”
I couldn’t answer.
My brain kept trying to reject what my eyes were seeing.
Marcus holding baby Lily.
Vanessa standing beside him.
My stepmother.
The woman who had cooked dinner for me.
The woman who attended my school events.
The woman who hugged me at my graduation ceremony.
The woman my mother warned me about.
“Explain,” my father said.
His voice was quiet.
That scared me more than yelling.
Vanessa didn’t move.
“Daniel…”
“Explain.””
She closed her eyes.
“I can’t.””
My father laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He pointed at the photograph.
“My daughter finds proof that my wife’s missing child was connected to my current wife, and you can’t explain?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Maya, please.””
I stepped backward.
“Don’t.””
She stopped.
That one word hurt her.
I saw it.
But I didn’t care.
“Did you know Lily?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Yes.””
My father looked like he had been hit.
“How?””
Vanessa sat down slowly.
“I met her.””
“When?””
“After Elena disappeared.””
My stomach twisted.
“After my mother died?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She asked me to help find Lily.””
I stared.
“You knew my mother?””
“Yes.””
The answer changed the air.
“You weren’t just my father’s wife.””
“No.””
Vanessa looked at the photograph.
“I was your mother’s friend.””
I felt dizzy.
Everything I believed about Vanessa was changing.
But not into something better.
Into something more complicated.
“Then why did she write that warning?””
Vanessa looked at the note still lying on the table.
Because she had no answer.
My father stepped closer.
“You married me because of Elena?””
Vanessa looked away.
“At first.””
The words destroyed him.
“At first?””
She nodded.
“I was trying to uncover what happened to her.””
My father’s face hardened.
“And then?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“And then I fell in love with you.””
Silence.
A painful silence.
I almost felt sorry for them.
Almost.
But then I remembered the photograph.
The secrets.
The years of lies.
My father looked away.
“I don’t know who you are.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I know.””
The blue room suddenly felt smaller.
Then I noticed something.
The photograph.
The back.
There was more writing.
I turned it over.
My mother’s handwriting again.
This time, only one sentence.
Vanessa knows where Lily is.
My heart stopped.
I looked up.
Vanessa went completely still.
My father saw it too.
“Vanessa.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Where is Lily?””
“I don’t know.””
My voice rose.
“My mother says you do.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“She thought I did.””
“That’s not the same.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“It isn’t.””
A sound came from outside.
A loud crash.
Everyone turned.
The auditorium doors opened.
A man stood at the entrance.
Older.
Tall.
Wearing a dark coat.
His eyes moved through the room.
Then stopped on me.
I knew immediately.
Even before anyone said his name.
Marcus.
My father stepped in front of me.
“Stay away from my daughter.””
Marcus smiled.
Not warmly.
Like he had expected this moment.
“You always did protect her.””
Vanessa backed away.
“Marcus.””
He looked at her.
“Still pretending you’re innocent?””
Her face went pale.
My father clenched his fists.
“What did you do?””
Marcus walked slowly toward the blue room.
“I finished what Elena started.””
My heart raced.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at me.
And smiled.
“Your mother never wanted you to find Lily.””
The room froze.
I felt the anger before I felt the fear.
“That’s a lie.””
Marcus tilted his head.
“Is it?””
He reached into his coat.
And pulled out a small envelope.
A different envelope.
One with my mother’s handwriting.
But this one had a date.
A date from two years before she died.
Marcus held it up.
“She wrote this after she discovered the truth.””
My father stared.
“What truth?””
Marcus smiled.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“The reason Lily disappeared…”
He looked directly at me.
“…is because your mother found out she wasn’t the only child she had hidden.””
He dropped the envelope onto the floor.

And before anyone could move, the blue room door slammed shut.
Locking Marcus inside.
