Chapter 4: The Name Buried With My Mother
“Marcus.””
Vanessa said the name so quietly that, for a second, I wondered if I had imagined it.
But I hadn’t.
My father heard it too.
His entire body stiffened.
The recording device sat on the table between us, still blinking a tiny red light.
My mother’s voice was gone.
The stranger’s voice was gone.
But the name remained.
Marcus.
A name that meant something to everyone except me.
I looked between them.
“Who is Marcus?””
Nobody answered.
That silence was louder than the recording.
I stepped closer to my father.
“Dad.””
He looked at the floor.
“Daniel,” Vanessa whispered.
My father lifted his eyes.
“Don’t.””
The way he said it frightened me.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Broken.
I had spent my entire life seeing my father as the person who could fix anything.
The man who repaired broken chairs instead of buying new ones.
The man who drove through storms to pick me up from school.
The man who told me every problem had a solution.
But standing inside that blue room, holding a message from my dead mother, he looked like a stranger.
“Maya,” he said softly.
I waited.
“I don’t know everything.””
I laughed once.
A painful sound.
“That’s impossible.””
He looked at me.
“You think I wanted this?””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I think you spent years telling me everything was fine when it wasn’t.””
His jaw tightened.
Because he knew I was right.
Vanessa moved toward the recording device.
“We need to listen to the rest.””
I turned sharply.
“There’s more?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation answered me.
“You knew.””
“No.””
“You knew there was another recording.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I knew Elena left something behind.””
My hands tightened around the note.
“And you never told us?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I stepped closer.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice became louder.
“Everyone says they were protecting me. My mother hid things. You hid things.
My father hid things. Do you know what it feels like to find out your entire childhood was built on secrets?””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could.
The truth was too heavy.
My father reached for the recording device.
“I need to hear it.””
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“Daniel, please.””
He looked at her hand.
Then at her face.
“After everything I just learned, you still think you can stop me?””
She let go.
My father pressed the button again.
Static.
Then my mother’s voice returned.
“Maya, if you found this room, then you found the key.””
A pause.
A shaky breath.
“I need you to understand something. I never wanted to leave you with unanswered questions.””
My eyes filled immediately.
Hearing her voice after sixteen years felt impossible.
Like a ghost had walked into the room and called my name.
“I had a daughter before you,” my mother continued.
“Her name was Lily.””
I looked at the photograph.
“She was taken from me.””
My father closed his eyes.
“I searched for her.””
My mother’s voice cracked.
“I searched until I had nothing left.””
A quiet sob escaped Vanessa.
I looked at her.
She covered her mouth.
Why was she crying?
“She wasn’t taken by a stranger,” my mother continued.
The room became still.
“She was taken by someone who knew me.””
A sharp sound came from the recording.
Then:
“Marcus.””
My father opened his eyes.
My mother continued.
“Marcus Hale was someone I trusted.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Oh my God.””
I turned toward her.
“You know him.””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at me.
“I knew of him.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She swallowed.
“He was your mother’s business partner.””
My father stared at her.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You didn’t know?””
My father stepped back.
“Elena had a business partner?””
“Yes.””
“What business?””
Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the photograph.
“A private adoption organization.””
The words hit the room like a crash.
My stomach turned.
My mother.
An adoption organization.
A missing child.
A hidden room.
A man named Marcus.
Everything connected.
The recording continued.
“Maya, I need you to be careful. Marcus will tell you he loved me. He will tell you he was helping me. He will tell you he had reasons.””
A pause.
“He is lying.””
The recording stopped.
The red light disappeared.
Nobody moved.
Then the auditorium lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Everyone outside the room gasped.
My father looked toward the door.
“What is happening?””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Fear returned.
“He knows.””
I stared at her.
“Who?””
She looked at the hallway.
And whispered:
“Marcus.””
A phone began ringing.
Not the old recording device.
A real phone.
My father reached into his pocket.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
I saw the name.
Unknown Number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
Nobody breathed.
A deep male voice came through the speaker.
“Daniel.””
My father froze.
The voice continued.
“I see Elena finally decided to tell your daughter the truth.””
My heart stopped.
My father looked at me.
“Who is this?””
A quiet laugh.
“You know exactly who this is.””
Vanessa stepped away.
“No…”
The man continued.
“Vanessa, you should have kept your promise.””
My stepmother covered her mouth.
My father’s grip tightened around the phone.
“What did you do?””
The voice became colder.
“I didn’t do anything.””
A pause.
“Your wife did.””
The call ended.
And immediately, another sound came from the blue room.
A hidden compartment inside the wall clicked open.
Something slid out.
A small envelope.
May you like
With one word written across the front.
MAYA.
