Chapter 5: The Letter My Mother Never Sent
I stared at the envelope for several seconds.
Nobody moved.
Nobody even spoke.
It was strange how something so small could control an entire room.
A piece of paper.
An old envelope.
My mother’s handwriting.
My name.
MAYA.
I reached for it.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Wait.””
I stopped.
Not because I trusted her.
Because I wanted to know why she was afraid.
“What?””
She looked at the envelope like it was a weapon.
“Your mother didn’t want you opening that alone.””
I looked at my father.
“Then why did she hide it for me to find?””
Vanessa had no answer.
That was becoming a pattern.
My father took a step closer.
“Maya, whatever is inside, we read it together.””
I nodded.
Not because I was ready.
Because I wasn’t.
But because I knew I couldn’t run from my own past anymore.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was one folded page.
The paper was yellowed with age.
The ink had faded.
But the first line destroyed me.
My sweet Maya,
If you are old enough to find this, then you are old enough to know what happened.
I swallowed hard.
My mother always called me sweet Maya.
Even when I was seventeen and angry.
Even when I told her she was embarrassing me before she died.
I continued.
Your father loves you.
I need you to know that first.
My eyes moved to Daniel.
He looked away.
But I saw tears on his face.
He had been holding them back.
Your father is not the reason Lily disappeared.
My breath caught.
I looked at him.
A tiny piece of relief crossed his face.
Like he had been carrying a weight for years.
But then I read the next sentence.
However, he is not the only person I trusted.
The room went quiet.
My mother continued:
There are people who will tell you this was an accident.
It was not.
There are people who will tell you Lily was lost.
She was not.
Someone chose to take her.
My fingers trembled.
Then came the sentence that made Vanessa sit down.
The person who helped Marcus was someone inside our family.
My father turned toward Vanessa.
“No.””
Vanessa shook her head immediately.
“No, Daniel.””
But my mother’s words continued.
I don’t know how far the betrayal goes.
I only know one thing.
I trusted the wrong person.
A sound escaped Vanessa.
A broken whisper.
“I didn’t betray her.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew if that was true.
My father looked at her.
“Then explain.””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“I met Elena because of Marcus.””
That changed everything.
I stared.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“I didn’t know who he really was.””
“When did you meet him?””
“Years after Lily disappeared.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“Then why did Elena write about someone in the family?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
The room fell silent again.
Then my phone buzzed.
Everyone looked at me.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
My blood turned cold.
There was a photo attached.
A recent photo.
Not old.
Not from the past.
Recent.
It showed me standing outside the university two days earlier.
Someone had been watching me.
Below the picture was a message.
STOP SEARCHING FOR WHAT YOUR MOTHER HID.
I dropped the phone.
My father grabbed it.
His face changed.
“He’s watching you.””
Vanessa stood quickly.
“We need to leave.””
“No,” I said.
Everyone looked at me.
I picked up the phone.
“I spent my entire life not knowing why my mother disappeared into silence.””
I looked at the blue room.
“I’m done being afraid of doors.””
My father stared at me.
“Maya…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“But I’m opening this.””
Inside the cabinet, behind the envelope, was another object.
A small wooden box.
My mother’s initials were carved into the top.
E.R.
I opened it.
Inside was a necklace.
A baby bracelet.
And a photograph.
This time, it wasn’t my mother holding Lily.
It was Marcus.
Holding Lily.
But behind him stood another person.
Someone I recognized.
Someone who had been standing beside me at every family event.
Someone who had smiled at me for ten years.
My hand covered my mouth.
Because the person in the photograph was Vanessa.
May you like
And written on the back were five words.
THEY BOTH LIED TO ME.
