Chapter 8: The Father Who Wasn’t My Father
I don’t remember sitting down.
One moment I was standing.
The next, I was on the floor beside the old wooden table, staring at a piece of paper that had shattered everything I knew.
Marcus is Maya’s father.
The sentence repeated in my head.
Again.
Again.
Again.
My father stood several feet away.
Daniel.
The man who taught me how to ride a bike.
The man who held my hand at my mother’s funeral.
The man who stayed awake all night when I had the flu.
The man who called me his daughter.
I looked at him.
“Dad.””
The word came out automatically.
His eyes filled.
“Maya…”
“Is it true?””
He looked broken.
“I don’t know.””
That answer hurt.
Because I needed him to know.
I needed someone to know something.
Vanessa moved closer.
“Maya, listen—”
“No.””
I stood up.
“Everyone keeps telling me to listen.””
My voice shook.
“But nobody answers.””
I pointed at the letter.
“Is he my father?””
Silence.
Then my father whispered:
“I raised you.””
My eyes burned.
“That wasn’t my question.””
He looked down.
And that was when I saw it.
Pain.
Real pain.
Because he knew.
He knew the answer might destroy him.
“I don’t know,” he repeated.
Behind the door, Marcus spoke.
“Ask Vanessa.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa froze.
Marcus continued.
“She knows.””
My father looked at her.
“You knew?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Not this.””
Marcus laughed.
“You knew enough.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I knew Elena had secrets.””
“You knew she was afraid of me.””
“Yes.””
“Then you knew.””
Vanessa pressed her hands against her face.
“I knew Elena was trying to protect Maya.””
I stared at her.
“From you?””
She looked at me.
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
And terrifying.
My father grabbed the door handle.
“Why?””
Vanessa answered before Marcus could.
“Because Elena believed Marcus would use Maya to get what he wanted.””
The auditorium seemed colder.
“What did he want?””
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus did.
“My daughter.””
My stomach turned.
“You abandoned me.””
“No.””
His voice became softer.
“I was kept away from you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“By who?””
A pause.
Then:
“Your mother.””
The anger came fast.
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
His voice was calm.
“That’s what Elena taught you to believe.””
My father stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Marcus ignored him.
“Maya, your mother was afraid of losing everything.””
“You don’t get to talk about her.””
“I do.””
His voice sharpened.
“Because she took my child.””
I felt frozen.
“You’re saying my mother stole you from me?””
“No.””
A pause.
“She stole me from you.””
Nobody spoke.
I hated that part of me wanted answers.
Even from him.
Especially from him.
Because my entire identity had just cracked open.
My father walked toward me.
“Maya.””
I stepped away.
Not because I didn’t love him.
Because I was scared.
Scared that everything I believed about myself was borrowed.
My father’s expression broke.
“I am your father.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t know that.””
The moment the words left my mouth, I regretted them.
But they were already there.
He looked like I had physically hurt him.
Vanessa whispered:
“Maya…”
I turned away.
Then I heard something.
A small sound.
Coming from inside the blue room.
A child’s voice.
Everyone froze.
A recording.
Not Marcus.
Not Elena.
A child.
A little girl.
“Mommy?””
My heart stopped.
Marcus became silent.
The voice continued.
“I’m scared.””
My father moved closer.
The recording played through the door.
Then Elena’s voice.
“Lily, listen to me.””
My breath caught.
Lily.
“She’s going to protect you.””
A child cried.
“Who?””
My mother answered:
“Your sister.””
A pause.
“Maya.””
I covered my mouth.
The recording ended.
And for a moment, nobody existed except me.
My mother had known.
She had spoken my name.
She had told Lily about me.
My father looked at Vanessa.
“Where is the rest of the recording?””
Vanessa slowly shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Then Marcus said:
“She destroyed it.””
My father looked at him.
“Who?””
Marcus answered:
“Your wife.””
The blue door unlocked.
Slowly.
Everyone stepped back.
The door opened an inch.
But Marcus did not come out.
Instead, something slid across the floor.
A small plastic hospital bracelet.
My name was written on it.
MAYA ELENA DANIELS.
And underneath it, another name.
A name I had never seen before.
May you like
My original last name.
Hale.
