Chapter 9: The Blood Test That Changed Everything
Nobody wanted to touch the bracelet.
It sat on the floor like a piece of evidence from a crime scene.
Because maybe that was what it was.
Evidence.
Evidence that my entire life had been built on a story someone else wrote.
My father picked it up first.
He stared at the name.
Then at me.
“Maya…”
I couldn’t look at him.
The bracelet was too much.
My name.
Marcus’s name.
A connection I never asked for.
A truth I never wanted.
Marcus stepped out of the blue room.
Slowly.
His expression was different now.
Not victorious.
Not angry.
Almost sad.
That made me hate him more.
Because I didn’t want sympathy from him.
“You see?”” he said.
I looked at him.
“See what?””
“That I was telling the truth.””
I laughed.
“You expect me to believe you because you showed me a bracelet?””
“No.””
He looked toward the table.
“Because your mother left proof.””
My father stepped between us.
“You stay away from her.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You’re still playing the role.””
“What role?””
“The father.””
The words hit hard.
My father’s face tightened.
Marcus looked at me.
“I’m sorry you had to learn this way.””
“Don’t.””
I hated how calm he sounded.
“How long have you known?””
“Known what?””
“That I was your daughter.””
Marcus looked down.
“Since the day you were born.””
My breathing stopped.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing?””
His expression changed.
“I tried.””
“Really?””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“You let me grow up thinking my father was someone else.””
“I was told to stay away.””
“By my mother?””
He didn’t answer.
That answer was enough.
My father looked at him.
“Who told you?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Nobody moved.
My father slowly turned.
“No.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
His voice broke.
“Not you too.””
She looked destroyed.
“I didn’t have a choice.””
Everyone said that.
Everyone.
I was tired of those words.
“I didn’t have a choice.””
My voice echoed.
“Everyone always says that.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“My mother.””
I looked at Marcus.
“You.””
I looked at my father.
“Everyone.””
My hands shook.
“But nobody ever chooses me.””
The silence afterward was painful.
Then Vanessa walked toward me.
Slowly.
“I did.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“I chose you.””
She wiped her tears.
“The day I met you, I chose you.””
“Then why lie?””
“Because Elena begged me.””
My anger softened slightly.
“She knew she was dying.””
Vanessa nodded.
“She knew Marcus was looking for Lily.””
“And me.””
“Yes.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Why?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then said:
“Because you weren’t just his daughter.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
She looked toward Marcus.
“He wanted your mother’s research.””
My father frowned.
“What research?””
Vanessa answered:
“The adoption records.””
Everything went quiet.
Marcus’s face changed.
For the first time.
Fear.
Real fear.
Vanessa continued.
“Elena discovered that Marcus had been illegally changing records.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“That’s a lie.””
“No.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“She found the children.””
My stomach dropped.
“Children?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Lily wasn’t the only one.””
The auditorium went silent.
My mother’s secret was bigger than I imagined.
Bigger than our family.
Bigger than one missing child.
Marcus moved suddenly.
My father reacted immediately.
He grabbed Marcus’s arm.
Security rushed forward.
But Marcus didn’t fight.
He only looked at me.
“Maya.””
I stared.
“What?””
His voice lowered.
“Ask your mother why she kept you alive.””
The words chilled me.
“What does that mean?””
He smiled sadly.
Then security pulled him away.
As he disappeared through the auditorium doors, he shouted one final thing:
“Your DNA test is waiting in the blue room.””
I turned.
The blue room.
The place where every secret had been buried.
My father looked at me.
“I don’t want you to do this.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
He hesitated.
Because he already knew.
“Because I’m afraid of the answer.””
I walked back to the door.
Inside the room was a small envelope.
A laboratory logo.
A date.
A sample number.
And one sentence written by my mother.
Maya,
Before you decide who your father is…
Find out who I was hiding you from.
I opened the envelope.
And the first page revealed something impossible.
The DNA test wasn’t between me and Marcus.
May you like
It was between me…
and Lily.
