Chapter 3: The Daughter Nobody Knew About
The photograph stayed on the floor between us.
Nobody wanted to touch it.
Not because it was fragile.
Because it was dangerous.
My father stared at the image like it had reached out from the past and grabbed him by the throat.
“That’s impossible,” he whispered.
I picked up the photo.
My hands were shaking.
There was my mother.
Younger.
Smiling.
Alive.
Wearing the same white wedding dress Vanessa had walked into the auditorium wearing.
And in her arms was a baby.
A baby I had never seen.
A baby who looked less than a year old.
I looked at my father.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
“Who is that?””
His silence hurt more than any answer could have.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Maya…”
I turned on her.
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You knew.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
The word landed like a slap.
“You knew about this?””
“Yes.””
“For how long?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Since before I married your father.””
My father looked at her.
“You knew?””
His voice was barely controlled.
“You knew there was another child?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I knew there was a secret.””
“A secret?””
My father laughed bitterly.
“My wife died, and you knew she had another child?””
Vanessa looked toward the blue room.
“She didn’t tell me everything.””
I stepped forward.
“Then tell us what you know.””
Vanessa looked at me.
And for the first time, I didn’t see my stepmother.
I saw a woman carrying guilt.
“When I met your father, I found a box in this room.””
My father frowned.
“What box?””
“A box Elena left behind.””
My mother’s name coming from Vanessa’s mouth felt strange.
“She told me if anything happened to her, I needed to protect you.””
I stared.
“Protect me?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She knew something was wrong.””
The auditorium was no longer a graduation ceremony.
It was a courtroom.
And every person standing there was waiting for the truth.
My father looked at the open door.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because Elena made me promise.””
“You promised my dead wife over telling me?””
“Yes.””
The answer shocked him.
But it shocked me more.
Why would my mother trust Vanessa?
The woman who now wore her dress?
The woman she warned me about?
I stepped toward the door.
Inside was darkness.
Not scary darkness.
Forgotten darkness.
The kind of darkness that belonged to rooms nobody opened.
My father grabbed my shoulder.
“Maya.””
I looked at him.
“I need to know.””
He nodded slowly.
Because he needed to know too.
Together, we entered.
The blue room was smaller than I imagined.
A single wooden cabinet sat against the wall.
Old boxes covered the floor.
And on the table was another note.
My name was written on it.
Maya.
My breathing stopped.
I reached for it.
Vanessa whispered:
“She wrote that before she died.””
I unfolded the paper.
My mother’s handwriting appeared again.
My precious Maya,
If you are reading this, then the truth finally found you.
I had to hide it because someone I trusted betrayed me.
I looked up.
Everyone was watching.
I kept reading.
The baby in the photograph is your sister.
Her name is Lily.
She was born before you.
And she was taken from me.
The room spun.
My sister.
A sister I never knew existed.
A sister my mother lost.
I looked at my father.
“Did you know?””
He looked destroyed.
“No.””
I believed him.
Because his face was not the face of a liar.
It was the face of someone discovering his entire life was built on missing pieces.
I continued reading.
I wanted to tell you everything.
But I was afraid.
Not of losing my marriage.
Not of losing my reputation.
I was afraid of losing you.
The next line was darker.
The person who took Lily is still close to this family.
My eyes lifted.
Slowly.
Toward Vanessa.
Her face turned white.
“No,” she whispered.
My father looked at her.
“What?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s not what she meant.””
But then another sound came from inside the cabinet.
A phone ringing.
Everyone froze.
The old cabinet.
The one covered in dust.
The one nobody had touched.
The phone kept ringing.
My father opened the cabinet.
Inside was a small recording device.
And a handwritten label.
ELENA — PLAY ONLY WHEN MAYA FINDS THE KEY.
My fingers went numb.
My mother had planned this.
She knew.
She knew I would find it someday.
My father pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
My mother’s voice.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
“Maya…”
I covered my mouth.
Tears came instantly.
“Baby, if you’re hearing this, I’m sorry.””
My father closed his eyes.
Vanessa started crying.
My mother continued.
“There is something you need to know about Lily.””
The recording paused.
A click.
Then another voice appeared.
A man’s voice.
A voice none of us recognized.
And he said:
“Elena, you should have never hidden the child from me.””
The recording ended.
The room went silent.
Then Vanessa whispered one name.
May you like
A name that made my father step backward.
“Marcus.””
