Chapter 2: The Letter I Was Never Meant to Read
Adrian Hale had faced hostile investors, courtroom battles, and business rivals who spent years trying to destroy his company.
None of them had ever made his hands shake.
But a sealed envelope with his name written in Olivia's handwriting did.
He stood in the middle of the empty road, rain dripping from his coat, staring at the old paper as if it could explode.
"Your brother?"" Adrian repeated.
Lucas nodded.
"Yes.""
Adrian looked at the boy carefully.
"Who told you that?""
"My mom.""
The answer came too quickly.
Too confidently.
Adrian turned the envelope over in his hand.
Seven years.
Seven years of believing Olivia abandoned him.
Seven years of waking up every morning with the same question.
Why wasn't I enough?
And now a child he never knew existed was telling him that the person closest to him had stolen his family.
"Lucas," Adrian said quietly, "my brother wouldn't do that.""
The boy's expression changed.
Not anger.
Disappointment.
Like he expected Adrian to defend him.
"You don't even know what he did, do you?""
Adrian said nothing.
Lucas stepped closer.
"You still protect him.""
The words landed harder than Adrian expected.
Because they were true.
His whole life, Adrian had protected his younger brother, Nathan.
When Nathan failed exams, Adrian convinced their parents to give him another chance.
When Nathan made reckless business decisions, Adrian cleaned up the damage.
When Nathan lost millions in a failed investment, Adrian quietly covered the debt.
Nathan was the charming one.
The emotional one.
The one everyone forgave.
Adrian was the one who carried everything.
But this?
This was impossible.
"I need to talk to your mother," Adrian said.
Lucas looked away.
"You can't.""
"Why?""
The boy hesitated.
Then he answered.
"Because she might not recognize you.""
The sentence froze him.
Adrian felt his throat tighten.
"What's wrong with her?""
Lucas stared at the ground.
"The doctors said the disease has gotten worse.""
Adrian swallowed.
"What disease?""
Lucas didn't answer immediately.
He looked like he hated having to say it.
"She has cancer.""
The rain suddenly felt colder.
Adrian closed his eyes for a second.
Olivia.
The woman who once laughed at his terrible cooking.
The woman who fell asleep on his shoulder during late-night movies.
The woman who held his hand when they heard their baby cry for the first time.
She was dying.
And he had spent years thinking she hated him.
"Where do you live?"" Adrian asked.
Lucas gave him an address.
Marcus walked back toward the SUV and opened the rear door.
"Mr. Hale, should I call security? This situation—"
"No.""
Marcus stopped.
Adrian looked at him.
"No security. No assistants. No one else.""
"But sir—"
"I said no.""
Marcus lowered his head.
"Yes, sir.""
Lucas watched him carefully.
"You really believe me?""
Adrian looked at the boy.
"I don't know what I believe.""
Honesty surprised Lucas.
"But I know one thing," Adrian continued.
"If your mother is sick, I'm going to help.""
Lucas's jaw tightened.
"Because you feel guilty?""
Adrian looked away.
The boy had found the one wound he didn't know existed.
"Maybe.""
Lucas crossed his arms.
"That's not enough.""
Adrian looked back at him.
"What do you want from me?""
Lucas stared into his eyes.
"I want you to stop pretending you lost us.""
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed him.
The apartment building was nothing like the world Adrian lived in.
No marble floors.
No private elevators.
No security at the entrance.
Just cracked concrete walls, flickering lights, and a hallway that smelled like old paint and rain.
Lucas walked ahead.
Adrian followed slowly.
Every step felt like entering a life he should have known.
A life he missed.
They stopped in front of apartment 3B.
Lucas reached for the door.
Then paused.
He looked back.
"Before we go inside...""
Adrian waited.
"My mom still loves you.""
The statement shocked him.
"How do you know?""
Lucas looked down.
"Because she says your name when she thinks I'm asleep.""
Adrian's chest tightened.
"But she hates what happened.""
"What happened?""
Lucas looked at the door.
"Ask her.""
He unlocked it.
The apartment was dark.
Small.
Quiet.
There were children's drawings taped to the refrigerator.
A stack of medical bills on the table.
A worn blanket on the couch.
And framed photographs.
Adrian walked closer.
His breath caught.
Most of them were of Lucas.
But one photo showed Olivia holding a baby.
Another showed her standing outside the hospital.
And another...
Another showed Adrian.
He was laughing.
Actually laughing.
Something he rarely did anymore.
"She kept these?"" Adrian whispered.
Lucas nodded.
"She never threw anything away.""
A weak voice suddenly came from the bedroom.
"Lucas?""
Both of them froze.
"Who are you talking to?""
Lucas looked at Adrian.
For a moment, neither moved.
Then Lucas stepped aside.
"Mom...""
Olivia appeared in the doorway.
Adrian forgot how to breathe.
She was thinner.
Much thinner.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face was pale.
But it was still her.
The same eyes.
The same expression when she was trying not to cry.
Seven years disappeared.
"Adrian.""
His name left her lips like a memory she wasn't ready to touch.
He couldn't speak.
Olivia grabbed the doorframe for support.
"Why are you here?""
Adrian took one step forward.
"I didn't know.""
Her expression changed.
Pain replaced surprise.
"You didn't know what?""
"About Lucas.""
Silence filled the room.
Lucas looked between them.
Olivia closed her eyes.
"Lucas.""
"I'm sorry, Mom.""
"You weren't supposed to—"
"I had to.""
Her eyes moved back to Adrian.
"Did he tell you everything?""
Adrian shook his head.
"No.""
Olivia laughed softly.
It wasn't happiness.
It was exhaustion.
"Good.""
Adrian frowned.
"Good?""
She looked at him.
"Because if he told you everything, you'd hate me.""
The words confused him.
"Why would I hate you?""
Olivia looked toward the envelope in his hand.
Then her face changed.
She knew.
"You found it.""
Adrian held it up.
"You wrote this?""
She nodded.
"Seven years ago.""
"Why didn't you send it?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because Nathan took it.""
The room went silent.
Adrian felt his heartbeat slow.
"What?""
Olivia walked back to the couch and sat down carefully.
"Your brother came to the hospital that night.""
Adrian stared at her.
"Nathan?""
She nodded.
"He said you knew everything.""
Adrian shook his head.
"No. I didn't.""
"I know that now.""
Her voice cracked.
"But back then, I was exhausted. I had just given birth. I was scared. And Nathan told me you had already decided.""
"Decided what?""
"That you didn't want a family.""
Adrian felt sick.
"No.""
Olivia looked at him.
"He showed me messages.""
"What messages?""
She looked away.
"Messages between you and him.""
Adrian's face hardened.
"Nathan never showed me anything.""
"I know.""
The realization hit him.
Nathan had controlled both sides.
He had convinced Olivia that Adrian abandoned her.
He had convinced Adrian that Olivia left.
A perfect lie.
Seven years built on silence.
"Why didn't you call me?"" Adrian asked.
Olivia looked at him.
"I did.""
"When?""
"Every day.""
The answer was barely a whisper.
"After I left, I called your office. Your assistant said you didn't want to speak to me.""
Adrian's stomach dropped.
"My assistant would never—"
Olivia looked at him.
"Adrian.""
He stopped.
Because he suddenly remembered.
The assistant who worked for him seven years ago.
The one Nathan recommended.
The one who controlled his schedule.
The one who disappeared six months later after a financial investigation.
Adrian felt anger rising.
But beneath the anger was something worse.
Regret.
A terrible understanding.
He had trusted the wrong people.
And ignored the right one.
"Where is Nathan now?"" Adrian asked.
Olivia's face became frightened.
"Don't.""
"Where is he?""
"Adrian, listen to me.""
Her voice trembled.
"Nathan isn't afraid of losing money.""
Adrian stared at her.
"What does that mean?""
Olivia looked toward Lucas.
Then back at him.
"It means he already knows Lucas found you.""
Adrian went still.
"What?""
A sudden sound interrupted them.
A phone ringing.
Everyone looked toward the table.
It wasn't Adrian's phone.
It wasn't Lucas's.
It was Olivia's old phone.
She picked it up.
The color drained from her face when she saw the name on the screen.
Adrian noticed.
"Who is it?""
Olivia didn't answer.
The phone kept ringing.
Finally, with trembling fingers, she answered.
A man's voice came through the speaker.
Even from across the room, Adrian recognized it.
Because he had heard that voice his entire life.
"Hello, Olivia.""
Adrian stepped closer.
Olivia's eyes widened.
The voice continued.
"I heard my nephew finally found his father.""
Adrian froze.
May you like
Nathan laughed softly.
"Adrian... we need to talk.""
