Chapter 4: The Man Who Signed the Lie
Adrian stared at the name on his phone until the letters blurred.
Olivia's father.
A man who had once looked him in the eyes and told him:
"She left because she finally realized what kind of man you are.""
For seven years, those words had haunted him.
Now they felt different.
Not like a memory.
Like evidence.
"Who is it?"" Olivia asked.
Adrian slowly lowered the phone.
"Your father.""
The color drained from her face.
"No.""
Lucas immediately looked at his mother.
"Mom?""
She stepped back.
"No, he can't be involved.""
Adrian noticed the fear in her voice.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Fear.
"Olivia," he said quietly, "what happened between you and your father?""
She didn't answer.
That worried him more.
Because Olivia had always been honest.
Even when the truth hurt.
Especially when the truth hurt.
But now she looked like someone who had spent years running from a nightmare.
"Mom," Lucas said softly.
She closed her eyes.
Then she walked toward the kitchen table and sat down.
"Seven years ago, I thought Nathan was the only person who betrayed us.""
She looked at Adrian.
"I was wrong.""
The apartment became silent.
Outside, rain tapped against the windows.
A sound so gentle it almost felt cruel.
"Tell me everything," Adrian said.
Olivia looked at him.
"I don't know if you'll believe me.""
"Try me.""
She took a deep breath.
"When Lucas was born, my father came to the hospital.""
Adrian remembered him.
Richard Whitmore.
A powerful businessman.
A man who had always believed emotions were weaknesses.
"He was angry," Olivia continued.
"About the baby?""
She shook her head.
"About you.""
Adrian frowned.
"Why?""
"Because he hated that I chose you.""
The answer surprised him.
"He wanted me to marry someone from his world. Someone wealthy. Someone he could control.""
Lucas looked down.
Adrian noticed.
The boy had heard this story before.
"He told me you would destroy my future," Olivia said.
Adrian almost laughed.
"That's ironic.""
She gave him a sad smile.
"I know.""
Then her expression changed.
"After Lucas was born, my father came to my room.""
Her fingers tightened around each other.
"He told me you had decided to leave.""
Adrian felt his chest tighten.
"The same thing Nathan told you.""
She nodded.
"They were working together.""
The words were quiet.
But they changed everything.
Adrian stood still.
"How?""
"I don't know exactly.""
She looked at the box of letters.
"But I know they both wanted the same thing.""
"What?""
"Control.""
Adrian left the apartment two hours later with more questions than answers.
Lucas insisted on coming with him.
"No.""
Adrian stopped at the doorway.
"You need to stay with your mother.""
"I want to help.""
"You are twelve years old.""
Lucas's face hardened.
"And I'm the reason you know the truth.""
The response caught Adrian off guard.
Because he was right.
Lucas wasn't just a child caught in the middle.
He was the person who broke a seven-year-old lie.
Adrian crouched slightly so they were at eye level.
"You should never have had to fight this battle.""
Lucas looked away.
"But I did.""
Those four words stayed with Adrian.
A child shouldn't have known how to search for a missing father.
A child shouldn't have carried a photograph in his pocket waiting for the day someone would finally listen.
"Okay," Adrian said.
Lucas looked up.
"Okay?""
"You come with me.""
Olivia immediately stood.
"No.""
Both of them looked at her.
"Adrian, he doesn't need to be dragged into this.""
Lucas interrupted.
"I'm already in it.""
She looked at her son.
The sadness in her eyes almost broke Adrian.
After a long moment, she nodded.
"Bring him back.""
Adrian promised.
"I will.""
The next morning, Adrian sat inside the headquarters of Hale Industries.
The same building where he had spent years building an empire.
The same place where the truth had been hidden.
But everything looked different now.
The glass walls.
The expensive furniture.
The people rushing through the lobby.
It all felt meaningless.
Because somewhere inside this building, someone had helped erase his family.
Lucas walked beside him.
Employees stared.
Whispers followed them.
Adrian ignored all of it.
He entered the elevator and pressed the top floor.
His executive assistant, Claire, immediately stood when they arrived.
"Mr. Hale, your ten o'clock meeting—"
"Cancel everything.""
She blinked.
"Everything?""
"Everything.""
Her eyes moved toward Lucas.
Then back to Adrian.
"Who is he?""
Adrian looked at the boy.
"My son.""
The office went silent.
Claire's expression changed instantly.
She looked uncomfortable.
Almost frightened.
Adrian noticed.
"Claire.""
"Yes?""
"How long have you worked here?""
"Four years.""
"Who was my assistant before you?""
Her face changed.
"Nathan handled your office operations before I was hired.""
"Not Nathan.""
Adrian stepped closer.
"The assistant before you.""
Claire hesitated.
"Emily Parker.""
The name hit him.
"Where is she now?""
Claire lowered her voice.
"She left after an internal investigation.""
"What investigation?""
"I don't know.""
Adrian stared at her.
"Claire.""
She swallowed.
"The company said there were financial irregularities.""
"Who led the investigation?""
Another pause.
"Nathan.""
Of course.
Adrian turned away.
The pattern was becoming impossible to ignore.
"Find me every file connected to Emily Parker.""
"Mr. Hale—"
"Today.""
"Yes, sir.""
As Claire walked away, Lucas looked around.
"Your company is huge.""
Adrian didn't answer.
Because suddenly all he saw was a machine built on secrets.
Three hours later, Claire returned with a file.
Her face was pale.
"I found something.""
Adrian opened it.
The first page was an internal report.
Employee: Emily Parker.
Allegation: Unauthorized communication with outside parties.
Status: Terminated.
Adrian flipped through the pages.
Then stopped.
A handwritten note was attached.
Not official.
Not part of the report.
A private message.
*Nathan wants the woman silenced before Adrian finds out.*
Adrian's hand tightened.
"Who wrote this?""
Claire shook her head.
"I don't know.""
Lucas pointed.
"There's more.""
Adrian followed his finger.
Behind the note was a photograph.
A picture of Nathan meeting Emily.
But the date wasn't seven years ago.
It was recent.
Three months earlier.
Adrian stared.
Nathan had been hiding something for seven years.
And he was still doing it.
The office phone suddenly rang.
Claire answered.
Then her expression changed.
"Mr. Hale.""
Adrian looked up.
"What?""
She slowly placed the phone down.
"There's someone here to see you.""
"Who?""
Claire hesitated.
Then said:
"Your father-in-law.""
Adrian stood.
Richard Whitmore.
The man who started the lie.
The man who helped take his family away.
"Send him in.""
A minute later, the office doors opened.
Richard walked inside.
Older.
Grayer.
But still carrying the same confidence Adrian remembered.
His eyes moved to Lucas.
Then to Adrian.
And for the first time in years...
Richard looked afraid.
"I was hoping you would never find him.""
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Find who?""
Richard didn't answer.
He looked at Lucas.
Then back at Adrian.
"The truth.""
Adrian stepped forward.
"No.""
His voice was cold.
"You should have been afraid seven years ago.""
Richard swallowed.
"Adrian, you don't understand what happened.""
"Then explain.""
Richard looked toward the door.
As if checking whether someone was listening.
Then he whispered:
"Because Nathan wasn't the one who made Olivia disappear.""
Adrian froze.
"What?""
Richard's face tightened.
"The person who separated you from your family...""
May you like
He looked directly at Adrian.
"Was you.""
