Chapter 7: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
Adrian stared at the document until his eyes burned.
A separation agreement.
A legal document.
His name.
His signature.
A decision he had supposedly made.
But he had no memory of signing it.
"No," Adrian whispered.
Dr. Reeves watched him carefully.
"I know what you're thinking.""
"This isn't possible.""
The doctor nodded slowly.
"It was possible because Nathan planned every detail.""
Adrian looked at the photograph again.
There he was.
Unconscious.
Vulnerable.
And Nathan standing beside him like a man who had already won.
"How long did you know?""
Dr. Reeves sighed.
"Seven years.""
Adrian looked up sharply.
"Seven years?""
"I tried to expose him.""
"But you didn't.""
"No.""
The old doctor's voice carried regret.
"I was afraid.""
Adrian wanted to be angry.
He wanted to blame him.
But he understood fear.
Because for seven years, fear had controlled him too.
Fear that Olivia left because he failed.
Fear that he wasn't enough.
Fear that the truth was worse than the lie.
"What is this agreement?"" Adrian asked.
Dr. Reeves looked at the paper.
"Your legal separation from Olivia.""
"We were never married.""
"Not legally.""
The doctor pointed.
"But Nathan wanted documents showing you abandoned your family.""
Adrian read the page again.
It stated that Adrian Hale voluntarily relinquished all responsibilities regarding Olivia Whitmore and their child.
His child.
The words made him sick.
"He forged my signature.""
Dr. Reeves nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't Olivia know?""
"Because she never saw this document.""
Adrian looked confused.
"What?""
"Nathan told her you signed it after leaving.""
A cold silence filled the room.
"He never showed it.""
"No.""
Dr. Reeves leaned back.
"He only used it as a weapon.""
When Adrian returned to Olivia's apartment, she knew something had happened.
She looked at his face.
"What did you find?""
He placed the document on the table.
She picked it up.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
Her breathing changed.
"No.""
Adrian watched her.
"You've seen this before?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
But her hands were trembling.
"Olivia.""
She closed her eyes.
"I've seen something similar.""
"What?""
"After you disappeared, Nathan came to me.""
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"What did he say?""
"He said you had left everything behind.""
"Everything?""
She nodded.
"He said you didn't want the company. You didn't want your family.""
Adrian looked at the document.
The lie had layers.
Every person received a different version.
Every person believed a different piece.
Nathan hadn't just created one false story.
He had created an entire world.
"Why would he do this?"" Adrian asked.
Olivia looked at him.
"You know why.""
He didn't.
Or maybe he didn't want to admit it.
"Tell me.""
She hesitated.
Then said:
"Because he wanted your life.""
The words echoed.
Adrian thought about Nathan growing up.
Always standing beside him.
Always compared to him.
Always second.
Their father had once said:
"Adrian was born to lead. Nathan was born to follow.""
Maybe Nathan never forgot.
Maybe every smile hid resentment.
Every favor hid anger.
Every act of kindness had a price.
"But taking my company wasn't enough," Adrian said.
Olivia shook her head.
"No.""
She looked toward Lucas.
"He wanted everything.""
That evening, Adrian sat with Lucas on the balcony.
For the first time, they were alone.
The city lights stretched below them.
A world Lucas had never been part of.
A world Adrian had spent years building.
But neither of them said anything for a while.
Finally, Lucas spoke.
"Are you angry?""
Adrian looked at him.
"At who?""
"Everyone.""
The question surprised him.
Lucas looked down.
"At my mom. At your brother. At yourself.""
Adrian was quiet.
Because the boy had understood him better than most adults.
"I don't know.""
Lucas nodded.
"I was angry all the time.""
Adrian looked at him.
"At me?""
Lucas shrugged.
"At the person I thought you were.""
The honesty hurt.
"But now?""
Lucas looked toward the city.
"I don't know you yet.""
Adrian swallowed.
"I know.""
A small silence followed.
Then Lucas asked:
"Did you really love us?""
The question broke something inside him.
Not because it was cruel.
Because it mattered.
Adrian looked at his son.
"I loved you before I knew your name.""
Lucas didn't move.
"I loved you before I held you.""
His voice became quieter.
"And I loved you every day I thought I had lost you.""
For the first time, Lucas looked like a child.
Not a fighter.
Not someone searching for answers.
Just a boy who wanted to know if he had ever been wanted.
"Then why didn't you find us?""
Adrian looked away.
Because he had no answer that didn't hurt.
"I should have.""
Lucas nodded.
"Yeah.""
Adrian accepted it.
Because Lucas deserved the truth.
Not excuses.
The next morning, Adrian made a decision.
He went to Hale Industries.
But this time, he wasn't looking for old documents.
He was looking for Nathan.
His brother had spent seven years hiding.
Now Adrian wanted him to stop.
Security opened the private elevator.
Nathan was waiting in the executive office.
Almost as if he knew.
He stood by the window, looking over the city.
"You found the doctor.""
Adrian stopped.
"You knew.""
Nathan smiled faintly.
"I knew you would eventually.""
"Why?""
Nathan turned.
"Because you're Adrian.""
"What does that mean?""
"It means you never stop searching when something doesn't make sense.""
Adrian stepped closer.
"Then you should know I found everything.""
Nathan's expression remained calm.
"The documents?""
"The doctor.""
That changed something.
Just slightly.
Enough.
"You talked to Reeves?""
"Yes.""
Nathan looked away.
"That old man should have stayed quiet.""
Adrian stared.
"You threatened him.""
"I protected myself.""
"You destroyed my family.""
Nathan's face hardened.
"No.""
He stepped forward.
"I saved you.""
Adrian almost couldn't believe it.
"From what?""
Nathan laughed.
"From becoming our father.""
The words stopped him.
Nathan continued.
"You think you were different?""
"I was.""
"Were you?""
Nathan pointed around the office.
"Look at this place.""
Adrian said nothing.
"You missed birthdays.""
"I worked.""
"You missed moments.""
"I was building something.""
"You were obsessed.""
Adrian felt anger rising.
"But that doesn't give you the right.""
"No.""
Nathan's voice became quieter.
"It doesn't.""
For a moment, he looked almost human.
Almost guilty.
Then it disappeared.
"You want the truth?""
Adrian stared at him.
"Yes.""
Nathan walked to his desk and opened a drawer.
He pulled out a small device.
A recording.
"I kept this because I knew you would come.""
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"What is it?""
Nathan smiled.
"The last conversation you and Olivia ever had.""
Adrian froze.
"That's impossible.""
"Is it?""
Nathan pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
Adrian's voice.
A voice from seven years ago.
"I can't keep doing this.""
Olivia's voice answered.
"Doing what?""
Then Adrian heard himself say:
"I don't know if I can be the father you need.""
His heart dropped.
The recording continued.
Olivia cried.
"Adrian, please.""
Then his own voice.
"I think maybe Lucas would be better without me.""
The sound stopped.
Adrian stood frozen.
Nathan watched him.
"Now do you understand?""
Adrian couldn't breathe.
Because the voice was his.
The words were his.
But something was wrong.
Something was missing.
Then the recording continued.
A hidden second part.
Nathan's voice appeared.
"Say it again.""
A pause.
Adrian's confused voice:
"Why?""
Nathan:
"Because tomorrow you won't remember.""
Adrian's eyes widened.
The recording ended.
Silence.
Nathan looked at him.
"You weren't abandoned, Adrian.""
He smiled sadly.
"You were erased.""
Before Adrian could respond, his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A woman's terrified voice came through.
"Mr. Hale?""
Adrian recognized it immediately.
Emily Parker.
His former assistant.
The woman everyone thought disappeared.
"I know who helped Nathan.""
Adrian gripped the phone.
"Who?""
Emily's voice trembled.
"The person who signed the first document.""
A pause.
Then she whispered:
"It wasn't Nathan.""
Adrian froze.
"Then who was it?""
Emily took a shaky breath.
"It was someone you trusted more than anyone.""
The call cut off.
Adrian slowly lowered the phone.
Because one terrifying thought entered his mind.
May you like
The person who betrayed him wasn't standing outside his life.
They were inside it.
