Chapter 3: The Brother Behind the Lie

Adrian had spent seven years imagining the moment he would see Nathan Hale again.

He imagined anger.

He imagined shouting.

He imagined finally asking the questions that had haunted him.

But he never imagined hearing his brother's voice through Olivia's phone while standing inside the home of the family he never knew he had.

Nathan sounded calm.

Almost amused.

Like he was calling to discuss a business meeting.

Not a ruined life.

"Adrian," Nathan said through the speaker.

"Are you there?""

Nobody moved.

Olivia held the phone tightly, her knuckles turning white.

Lucas stood beside her, his face filled with fear.

Adrian reached out and took the phone.

"Nathan.""

A brief silence followed.

Then a quiet laugh.

"So it's true.""

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"What did you do?""

Nathan sighed.

"Straight to accusations? That's disappointing.""

"You know exactly what I'm talking about.""

"I know you're angry.""

"Angry?""

Adrian looked around the apartment.

At the medical bills.

At the photographs.

At the boy standing silently in the corner.

"My son grew up without me.""

His voice dropped.

"Olivia almost died without me knowing.""

Nathan didn't answer.

That silence was enough.

"You knew," Adrian whispered.

Another pause.

Then Nathan said something Adrian never expected.

"I did what I had to do.""

The words made his blood run cold.

"What does that mean?""

"It means I protected you.""

Adrian laughed once.

A broken, humorless sound.

"You destroyed my family.""

"No.""

Nathan's voice hardened.

"You destroyed your family when you chose work over people.""

Adrian stared at the phone.

For years, he had carried guilt.

He had blamed himself for losing Olivia.

He had wondered if he had been too focused on building an empire.

But now Nathan was twisting the knife.

Trying to make him believe the lie again.

"You manipulated her.""

"I gave her the truth.""

"You showed her fake messages.""

Nathan became quiet.

Just for a second.

But it was enough.

Adrian noticed.

"You did.""

"I showed her what she needed to see.""

"What she needed to see?""

Adrian's voice rose.

"You made her believe I abandoned her.""

Nathan sighed.

"Adrian, you don't understand.""

"No. I understand perfectly.""

He looked at Olivia.

Her eyes were full of tears.

She had spent seven years carrying the same pain he carried.

But alone.

"You wanted her gone.""

Nathan didn't respond.

That was the answer.

Seven years earlier, Adrian remembered the night everything changed.

He had been twenty-nine years old, exhausted, and preparing for the biggest business expansion of his life.

Hale Industries was growing faster than anyone expected.

Investors wanted more.

The board wanted more.

Everyone wanted something from him.

Everyone except Olivia.

She wanted a simple thing.

Time.

He remembered her sitting across from him at their kitchen table.

"You missed the appointment again.""

Her voice had been soft.

Not angry.

That was what hurt most.

Adrian had placed his phone on the table.

"I'll make it up to you.""

She smiled sadly.

"You always say that.""

"I mean it.""

"Adrian, you missed our baby's first ultrasound.""

He remembered looking down.

Feeling ashamed.

But also feeling trapped.

"I can't just disappear from my company.""

Olivia had touched her stomach.

"I never asked you to.""

The memory burned.

Because she was right.

She never wanted him to abandon his dreams.

She just wanted to be part of them.

And then Nathan appeared.

Always at the right moment.

Always offering advice.

Always pretending to help.

"Maybe you should give her space," Nathan had told him later.

Adrian had listened.

That was his mistake.

He listened.

The phone was still in Adrian's hand.

"Where are you, Nathan?""

"Why?""

"Because I want to see you.""

A pause.

Then Nathan chuckled.

"That sounds dangerous.""

"I want answers.""

"You won't like them.""

"I don't care.""

Nathan sighed.

"Fine.""

Adrian waited.

"Tomorrow. My office.""

"No.""

Nathan paused.

"No?""

"You come here.""

Silence.

Then Nathan laughed.

"You think you can order me around?""

Adrian looked at Lucas.

At Olivia.

At everything Nathan had taken from him.

"Yes.""

The confidence surprised even him.

"Because for seven years, you controlled the story.""

His voice became colder.

"Now I'm asking the questions.""

Nathan didn't answer.

Then the call ended.

After the room became quiet again, Olivia looked exhausted.

"Why did you do that?""

Adrian turned toward her.

"Do what?""

"Challenge him.""

"He lied to both of us.""

Her eyes lowered.

"You don't know everything.""

Adrian froze.

"What else is there?""

Olivia looked toward Lucas.

The boy immediately understood.

"Mom.""

She shook her head.

"No more secrets.""

She reached for a folder on the table.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

Inside were documents.

Old medical records.

Bank statements.

Printed emails.

Adrian picked up the first page.

Then another.

Then another.

The more he read, the colder he became.

"This...""

He looked at Olivia.

"This is from my company.""

She nodded.

"Your company account transferred money.""

Adrian frowned.

"To who?""

She didn't answer.

He looked at the document again.

A name appeared.

Nathan Hale.

His brother had taken money.

Not just from him.

From the company.

Millions.

"When did you find this?""

"After I left.""

Adrian looked confused.

"You found financial records after you left?""

Olivia nodded.

"Nathan came to my apartment.""

"When?""

"Six months after Lucas was born.""

Adrian's expression darkened.

"What did he want?""

Her eyes filled with fear.

"He wanted me to stay quiet.""

The room went silent.

"About what?""

Olivia looked at him.

"About the money he stole.""

Adrian felt the air leave his lungs.

Nathan wasn't just hiding a personal betrayal.

He was hiding a crime.

"He threatened you.""

Olivia didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

"What did he say?""

Her voice became barely audible.

"He said if I ever contacted you, he would make sure you lost everything.""

Adrian looked at Lucas.

The boy had heard this before.

He had grown up around fear.

A child learning secrets adults should have carried.

"I should have found you.""

Adrian's voice cracked.

Olivia looked at him.

"No.""

"Yes.""

"You were lied to.""

"I believed the lie.""

The honesty hurt.

"But I believed it.""

Olivia looked away.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Lucas interrupted.

"You need to see something.""

Both adults looked at him.

The boy walked to his bedroom and returned holding a small box.

He placed it on the table.

"My mom didn't want me to show you this.""

Adrian opened the box.

Inside were dozens of letters.

All addressed to him.

All unopened.

His name covered every envelope.

"What are these?""

Olivia closed her eyes.

"Letters I wrote.""

"Why didn't I get them?""

She looked at the floor.

"Because Nathan intercepted them.""

Adrian picked one up.

The paper was worn.

Old.

Like it had been touched many times.

"Did you send all of these?""

"Yes.""

"How many?""

Olivia swallowed.

"Forty-three.""

Adrian stared at the box.

Forty-three chances.

Forty-three moments where she reached for him.

Forty-three times someone stopped him from knowing.

His phone suddenly buzzed.

He pulled it out.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

One sentence.

One image.

His entire body went cold.

The photograph showed Nathan standing outside Olivia's apartment seven years ago.

But Nathan wasn't alone.

Standing beside him was Adrian's former assistant.

The same assistant who told Adrian Olivia never called.

The message below read:

*You want the truth? Ask yourself why your brother wasn't the only one lying.*

Adrian stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

This time, there was only a name.

May you like

A name he hadn't seen in seven years.

*Olivia's father.*
