Chapter 6: The Night That Vanished

Adrian stayed silent after Nathan’s words.

You still don’t remember.

The sentence followed him like a shadow.

For years, Adrian had believed his missing memories were just stress, exhaustion, and the chaos of becoming a father while running a company.

But now he understood.

There was a piece of his life that had been taken from him.

And Nathan knew exactly where it was.

"Tell me what happened," Adrian said.

Nathan didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he laughed softly.

Not because something was funny.

Because he was confident.

"You really think I'm going to explain everything over the phone?""

"You owe me that.""

"No.""

Nathan's voice became colder.

"I saved you from yourself.""

Adrian stood from the couch.

"You stole my family.""

"I prevented you from destroying them.""

"Stop lying.""

A pause.

Then Nathan said:

"Ask Olivia why she never told you what happened before Lucas was born.""

Adrian froze.

"What does that mean?""

Nathan ignored the question.

"Ask her about the night she found your file.""

"What file?""

But Nathan had already ended the call.

Adrian stared at the phone.

Another secret.

Another locked door.

Another piece of a life everyone seemed to know except him.

The next morning, Adrian found Olivia sitting at the kitchen table.

She looked exhausted.

But when she saw his face, she immediately knew.

"You spoke to him.""

Adrian nodded.

"Nathan sent me a video.""

Her expression changed.

"What video?""

"Security footage from the hospital.""

The color drained from her face.

"No.""

"You knew about it.""

She looked away.

"Adrian...""

"Tell me the truth.""

Her hands trembled.

"I didn't know he had it.""

"But you knew something happened.""

Silence.

That was enough.

Adrian pulled out a chair and sat across from her.

"Olivia.""

She closed her eyes.

"I was going to tell you.""

"When?""

She didn't answer.

"After seven years?""

Her face tightened.

"That's not fair.""

"No?""

Adrian's voice broke slightly.

"I lost seven years with my son.""

The pain in his voice made her look down.

"I know.""

"Then help me understand.""

Olivia stared at the table.

"When Lucas was born, Nathan told me you had made a mistake.""

Adrian listened.

"He said you were overwhelmed. That you wanted to leave but didn't know how to say it.""

"That's not true.""

"I know that now.""

She took a deep breath.

"But there was something else.""

"What?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Before Lucas was born, I found something.""

Adrian waited.

"A medical report.""

His brow furrowed.

"What kind of report?""

"About you.""

The answer made no sense.

"About me?""

She nodded.

"Your health.""

Adrian felt confused.

"I was healthy.""

"Yes.""

She looked at him.

"But the report said you weren't.""

A cold feeling moved through him.

"What did it say?""

Olivia hesitated.

Then whispered:

"That you had a neurological condition.""

Adrian stared at her.

"What?""

She quickly added:

"I didn't believe it.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I thought Nathan was trying to scare me.""

The room became quiet.

Adrian looked toward the window.

His mind searched for memories.

Doctor visits.

Tests.

Anything.

Nothing.

"I never had a condition.""

"I know.""

"Then why would Nathan create that?""

Olivia looked at him.

"Because he wanted me afraid.""

"Of what?""

She swallowed.

"Of leaving you alone with Lucas.""

Adrian felt anger rise.

"He made you think I was dangerous?""

She nodded.

"He told me you were losing control.""

Adrian stood.

"I would never hurt you.""

"I know.""

Her voice cracked.

"I knew you.""

She looked at him.

"That's why it didn't work.""

"Then why did you leave?""

The question hurt both of them.

Olivia looked away.

"Because I thought you chose to leave first.""

That afternoon, Adrian returned to Hale Industries.

But this time, he didn't go to his office.

He went downstairs.

To the archives.

The place where old company records were stored.

Claire followed him.

"Mr. Hale, are you sure about this?""

"Yes.""

"What exactly are we looking for?""

"Anything connected to Nathan.""

She hesitated.

"That's a lot.""

"Then start with seven years ago.""

The archive room was cold.

Rows of shelves filled with boxes.

Old contracts.

Financial reports.

Employee files.

A history of everything Adrian had built.

And everything someone had hidden.

After an hour of searching, Claire found something.

"Mr. Hale.""

He turned.

She held a small folder.

"No label.""

Adrian took it.

Inside was a single page.

A private medical assessment.

His name was at the top.

Adrian Hale.

His heart started racing.

He read the first line.

*Patient exhibits symptoms consistent with extreme stress reaction following traumatic event.*

He frowned.

Traumatic event?

He continued.

*Memory disruption may occur.*

Adrian stopped.

Memory disruption.

The words felt impossible.

"What is this?""

Claire looked concerned.

"I don't know.""

He flipped the page.

There was a signature.

Dr. Samuel Reeves.

Adrian recognized the name.

A private doctor who treated wealthy clients.

But he had never met him.

At least...

He didn't remember meeting him.

The thought terrified him.

"Find this doctor.""

Claire nodded.

"Right away.""

Two hours later, they found him.

Not easily.

Dr. Samuel Reeves had retired.

He lived outside the city.

When Adrian arrived, the old doctor looked surprised.

Then afraid.

"You remember me?""

Adrian stared at him.

"No.""

The doctor closed his eyes.

"I was afraid of that.""

The words sent a chill through Adrian.

"Tell me what happened.""

Dr. Reeves invited him inside.

Lucas came with him.

The doctor looked at the boy.

"You have a son.""

Adrian nodded.

"Yes.""

Dr. Reeves looked sad.

"Then Nathan failed.""

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Explain.""

The doctor sat down.

"Seven years ago, Nathan brought you to me.""

"Why?""

"He said you were having a breakdown.""

Adrian frowned.

"I wasn't.""

"No.""

Dr. Reeves looked at him.

"You weren't.""

The doctor opened an old notebook.

"He told me you had become unstable after Lucas was born.""

Adrian felt sick.

"What did you do?""

"I evaluated you.""

"And?""

"You were exhausted.""

Dr. Reeves looked down.

"You were terrified.""

"Of what?""

"Of becoming your father.""

The answer shocked him.

The doctor continued.

"You told me you were afraid your obsession with work would destroy your family.""

Adrian remembered.

A small flash.

Sitting in a doctor's office.

Crying.

Admitting his fears.

"But I never had a neurological condition.""

"No.""

Dr. Reeves shook his head.

"You were under emotional stress.""

"Then why did everyone think I was sick?""

"Because Nathan changed the report.""

Adrian froze.

"He altered my medical records?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Dr. Reeves looked at him.

"Because he wanted Olivia to believe you were dangerous.""

The room felt smaller.

Adrian's hands curled into fists.

"What happened after that?""

The doctor hesitated.

"That is the part you don't remember.""

Adrian leaned forward.

"Tell me.""

Dr. Reeves looked at Lucas.

Then back at him.

"The night you left Olivia...""

He paused.

"You didn't leave because you wanted to.""

Adrian held his breath.

"What happened?""

The doctor spoke slowly.

"Nathan drugged you.""

Silence.

"He brought you to me after.""

Adrian felt dizzy.

"Why?""

Dr. Reeves looked at him.

"Because he wanted proof.""

"Proof of what?""

The doctor's face became serious.

"That you were unstable.""

Adrian stared.

"And did you give him that proof?""

The old doctor looked ashamed.

"No.""

A pause.

"Because I realized what he was doing.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

Dr. Reeves looked away.

"Because Nathan threatened my family.""

The truth kept getting darker.

Every answer opened another wound.

Then the doctor reached into a drawer.

He pulled out a small envelope.

"I kept this because I knew one day you would come looking.""

Adrian stared at it.

"What's inside?""

Dr. Reeves handed it over.

"Something Nathan never knew I had.""

Adrian opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Not from the hospital.

Not from seven years ago.

From the night everything changed.

A picture of Nathan standing beside Adrian's unconscious body.

And in Nathan's hand...

Was a signed document.

Adrian looked closer.

His face went pale.

Because the document was titled:

*Voluntary Separation Agreement.*

And at the bottom was his signature.

His real signature.

But Adrian had never signed it.

Then Dr. Reeves said the words that made his blood turn cold.

"Nathan didn't just make Olivia believe you left.""

May you like

He looked at Adrian.

"He made the world believe you chose to disappear.""
