Chapter 8: The Person Behind the Door
Adrian did not sleep that night.
He sat alone in his office, surrounded by glass walls and a city that never stopped moving.
Seven years ago, he thought he lost his family because of a misunderstanding.
Then he thought he lost them because of Nathan.
Then he learned Nathan had built the lie.
But now there was another truth waiting.
Someone closer.
Someone he trusted.
Someone who helped Nathan.
The words from Emily's phone call repeated in his mind.
*The person who betrayed you wasn't standing outside your life.*
*They were inside it.*
Adrian opened every file he had collected.
Medical reports.
Financial records.
The separation agreement.
The old messages.
The hospital footage.
A pattern began forming.
Nathan couldn't have done everything alone.
Someone had to move information.
Someone had to control access.
Someone had to make sure Adrian never questioned what happened.
His eyes stopped on one name.
The assistant.
Emily Parker.
But Emily wasn't the only assistant he had.
Before her.
There was someone else.
Someone Nathan hired.
Someone who had complete control over Adrian's schedule.
Someone who knew every weakness.
Adrian searched the old employee records.
Then he saw it.
The name.
His stomach dropped.
"Impossible.""
The next morning, Adrian went back to the apartment.
Olivia immediately noticed something was wrong.
"You found another secret.""
It wasn't a question.
Adrian nodded.
"Emily called me.""
Olivia became still.
"She's alive?""
"Yes.""
"What did she say?""
Adrian looked at Lucas, who was sitting at the kitchen table.
Then at Olivia.
"She said Nathan didn't act alone.""
Olivia slowly sat down.
"Who helped him?""
Adrian placed a document on the table.
A former employee record.
Olivia looked at the name.
Her face changed.
"No.""
Adrian watched her carefully.
"You know her.""
Olivia's fingers tightened around the paper.
"She came to the hospital.""
"Who?""
Olivia looked up.
"The woman who told me you didn't want us.""
The room went silent.
Adrian stared.
"Who was she?""
Olivia whispered:
"Your mother.""
Adrian felt like the air had been knocked out of him.
"My mother?""
Olivia nodded slowly.
"I didn't know what to think at the time.""
"Why would she do that?""
"I don't know.""
Adrian stepped away.
His mother.
The woman who raised him.
The woman who taught him loyalty.
The woman who always said family came first.
She had been part of the lie?
"No.""
Olivia looked at him sadly.
"I wanted to believe that too.""
Adrian ran a hand through his hair.
"This doesn't make sense.""
Lucas watched him.
"Maybe she had a reason.""
Adrian looked at his son.
"People keep saying that.""
Lucas lowered his eyes.
"But reasons don't make things okay.""
The words stayed with him.
Because Lucas was right.
That afternoon, Adrian visited his mother.
Evelyn Hale lived alone in a quiet neighborhood outside the city.
The house looked exactly as he remembered.
The same white curtains.
The same garden.
The same wooden door where she used to wait for him after school.
For a moment, he almost forgot everything.
Almost.
Then she opened the door.
"Adrian.""
Her smile faded when she saw his face.
"What happened?""
He stepped inside.
"I need to ask you something.""
She immediately looked nervous.
That was the answer before the question was even asked.
"About what?""
"Nathan.""
Her expression changed.
Then he said:
"And Olivia.""
Silence.
Evelyn moved toward the living room.
"Come in.""
Adrian followed.
She sat down.
He remained standing.
"Did you visit Olivia after Lucas was born?""
A long pause.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Her eyes filled with sadness.
"Because I was trying to help.""
Adrian laughed quietly.
"That's what everyone says.""
"Adrian—"
"Did you tell her I wanted to leave?""
Evelyn looked away.
That was all he needed.
"You did.""
"I told her what I believed.""
"What Nathan told you?""
She didn't answer.
Adrian felt anger rising.
"My own mother.""
Her face broke.
"I was scared.""
"Of what?""
"Of losing you.""
He stared.
"You thought I was going to leave?""
She nodded.
"Nathan showed me things.""
"What things?""
"Messages.""
"Fake messages?""
Her silence confirmed it.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Seven years.
Everyone had been given a different lie.
And everyone believed because the lie came from someone they trusted.
"Why didn't you ask me?""
Evelyn started crying.
"Because I thought you were hiding something.""
"I was your son.""
"I know.""
Her voice broke.
"And I failed you.""
Adrian looked away.
The pain wasn't just betrayal.
It was realizing how many people had chosen fear over trust.
"Why did Nathan do this?"" Adrian asked.
Evelyn wiped her eyes.
"I don't know.""
"Yes, you do.""
She looked at him.
"Adrian.""
"Tell me.""
A long silence followed.
Then she whispered:
"Your father.""
Adrian frowned.
"What about him?""
Evelyn looked toward an old family photograph.
"Nathan spent his entire life trying to prove he was worthy.""
Adrian said nothing.
"Your father always compared you two.""
"I know.""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"You don't.""
Her voice became quieter.
"He didn't just compare your success.""
She looked at Adrian.
"He compared your worth.""
Adrian felt something shift.
"He told Nathan he was weak.""
A painful memory surfaced.
Nathan as a teenager.
Standing silently while their father praised Adrian.
Nathan smiling.
Pretending it didn't hurt.
"He hated you?""
Evelyn shook her head.
"No.""
The answer surprised him.
"He loved you.""
"Then why?""
"Because he believed if he became you, he would finally be loved the same way.""
Adrian looked down.
The explanation didn't excuse anything.
But it explained something.
Nathan wasn't born cruel.
He became obsessed.
And obsession became destruction.
Before Adrian left, Evelyn stopped him.
"There's something else.""
He turned.
She held a small box.
"I kept this because I didn't know what to do with it.""
"What is it?""
She opened it.
Inside was a flash drive.
Adrian looked confused.
"What is this?""
"Something Nathan gave me.""
His eyes narrowed.
"Why?""
"He wanted me to see it.""
"What was on it?""
Evelyn looked afraid.
"I never opened it.""
"Why?""
"Because after everything happened...""
She swallowed.
"I realized Nathan was not protecting you.""
She looked at Adrian.
"He was protecting himself.""
Adrian took the flash drive.
That night, Adrian returned to his office.
Lucas insisted on staying.
Olivia wanted to come.
But Adrian told her to rest.
For once, she listened.
He connected the flash drive.
A single folder appeared.
No password.
Inside were dozens of files.
Photos.
Documents.
Videos.
Adrian opened the first video.
It showed Nathan.
Seven years ago.
Talking to someone.
Someone off-camera.
Adrian leaned closer.
Then he heard the voice.
His mother's voice.
"You promised nobody would get hurt.""
Nathan replied:
"I promised Adrian would never know.""
Adrian froze.
The video continued.
Evelyn sounded terrified.
"What happens if he remembers?""
Nathan laughed.
"He won't.""
A pause.
Then Nathan said:
"Because by then, he'll hate himself.""
The video ended.
Adrian sat motionless.
The second file opened automatically.
This one was audio.
Nathan's voice.
"Everything is ready.""
Another voice answered.
A man's voice.
Familiar.
But not Nathan.
Not Evelyn.
Not Richard.
Adrian's blood ran cold.
Because he knew that voice.
He had heard it every day.
For years.
The recording continued.
"Once Adrian signs the transfer papers, the company will be mine.""
Nathan replied:
"And Olivia?""
The man answered:
"She'll disappear like you promised.""
Adrian stood.
His heart pounding.
Because the person speaking...
Was not a stranger.
Was not an enemy.
It was the person who had guided his life.
The person who had been beside him from the beginning.
Then the final file opened.
A photograph appeared.
Nathan.
Evelyn.
Richard.
And one more person standing between them.
A person Adrian never suspected.
His hand moved toward his mouth.
"No...""
Lucas stepped closer.
"Who is it?""
Adrian stared at the screen.
The final betrayal had a face.
A face from his own family.
A face he had trusted more than anyone.
And underneath the photograph was one name.
May you like
*Daniel Hale.*
His father.
