Chapter 9: The Father’s Last Secret

Adrian stared at the photograph until his eyes refused to believe what they were seeing.

Daniel Hale.

His father.

The man who had been dead for six years.

The man whose funeral Adrian attended.

The man whose last words to him had been:

"Protect the family.""

For years, Adrian had carried those words like a command.

Now they felt like a warning.

Lucas looked at the screen.

"That's your father?""

Adrian nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

"He's part of it?""

Adrian didn't answer.

Because he didn't know.

And for the first time in his life, he realized how little he actually knew about his own family.

A phone rang.

Both of them looked toward the desk.

The screen showed an unknown number.

Adrian answered.

"Hello?""

A voice came through.

Old.

Weak.

But familiar.

"Adrian.""

His entire body froze.

The phone nearly slipped from his hand.

"Dad?""

Lucas stared at him.

The voice on the other end breathed heavily.

"I know what you found.""

Adrian couldn't speak.

"That's impossible.""

A quiet sigh.

"I know.""

The voice trembled.

"That's why I stayed away.""

An hour later, Adrian sat inside a private room at an old hotel outside the city.

Lucas waited outside with security.

Adrian didn't want him involved.

Not this time.

Not in another family secret.

The door opened.

And Daniel Hale walked in.

Older.

Frailer.

Using a cane.

But alive.

Adrian stood immediately.

His emotions collided.

Anger.

Shock.

Relief.

Betrayal.

All at once.

"You let me bury you.""

Daniel looked down.

"I know.""

"You let me believe you were dead.""

"I had to.""

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

Daniel looked at him.

"You don't understand.""

"No.""

Adrian stepped closer.

"I don't.""

His voice cracked.

"Because while you were hiding, I lost seven years with my son.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

Adrian's anger finally broke through.

"You don't know what it feels like to miss someone's entire childhood.""

Silence.

Then Daniel said quietly:

"I missed yours.""

The words stopped him.

Adrian stared.

"What?""

His father looked away.

"I missed yours because I was trying to build something I thought would protect you.""

"What does that mean?""

Daniel sat down slowly.

"Nathan was not the beginning.""

Adrian waited.

"He was the consequence.""

Daniel took a folder from his bag.

Inside were old documents.

Older than everything Adrian had found.

"The company was never just a business.""

Adrian frowned.

"What?""

"Your grandfather built it as a legacy.""

"I know.""

"No.""

Daniel shook his head.

"He built it as a test.""

Adrian stared.

"A test?""

"He wanted to know who could carry the family name.""

The answer was obvious.

"You.""

Daniel nodded.

"And Nathan knew.""

Adrian looked down.

"So he hated me.""

"No.""

Daniel's expression became painful.

"He hated what he thought you represented.""

"Which was?""

"Everything he wasn't.""

The words reminded Adrian of Evelyn's confession.

Nathan had spent his life trying to become him.

But there was something missing.

A reason.

A trigger.

"What happened seven years ago?""

Daniel opened the folder.

"The company was in trouble.""

Adrian frowned.

"That isn't possible.""

"It was.""

Daniel pulled out financial reports.

"Nathan had made investments without permission.""

Adrian looked at the numbers.

Losses.

Millions.

"I covered those.""

"Yes.""

Daniel nodded.

"But you didn't know how much.""

Adrian felt cold.

"Nathan was drowning.""

"He was.""

Daniel looked at him.

"And he believed one thing.""

"What?""

"If you disappeared, everything would become his.""

Adrian stood and walked toward the window.

"So he destroyed my family for money.""

Daniel shook his head.

"No.""

The answer surprised him.

"Then why?""

Daniel looked at him.

"Because Nathan wanted you to lose.""

Adrian turned.

"Why?""

"Because money was never the thing he wanted.""

Daniel's voice became softer.

"He wanted you to feel what he felt.""

Adrian didn't understand.

"What?""

"Second place.""

The room became silent.

Daniel continued.

"Nathan spent his whole life watching you succeed.""

"That doesn't justify anything.""

"No.""

Daniel looked down.

"It doesn't.""

For the first time, Adrian saw something in his father's face.

Regret.

"I should have stopped it.""

"You knew?""

Daniel nodded.

"I suspected.""

The answer hurt.

"You knew and did nothing?""

"I tried.""

"When?""

"After Lucas was born.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Nathan came to me.""

Adrian's expression hardened.

"What did he say?""

"He said you were falling apart.""

"Like the others.""

"Yes.""

Daniel looked ashamed.

"He showed me recordings.""

"The fake ones?""

"Yes.""

Adrian felt anger rise.

"And you believed him?""

Daniel looked at the floor.

"I believed because I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

Daniel's answer was barely audible.

"That he was right.""

Adrian returned to the apartment before midnight.

Olivia was awake.

She saw his expression.

"Who was it?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Then:

"My father.""

Her face went pale.

"Daniel?""

Adrian nodded.

"He's alive.""

She sat down slowly.

"What?""

"I know.""

He placed the documents on the table.

"He's the reason Nathan knew how to manipulate everything.""

Olivia looked through them.

Then stopped.

"Adrian.""

"What?""

She pointed at a page.

"This name.""

He looked.

A transaction record.

A payment.

Recipient:

*Daniel Hale Foundation.*

His eyes narrowed.

"My father was receiving money.""

Olivia looked at him.

"From Nathan.""

Adrian felt betrayed again.

Another layer.

Another secret.

Before he could speak, Lucas entered the room.

"You found your dad.""

Adrian nodded.

Lucas looked at the documents.

"Was he the one who hurt you?""

The question was simple.

But Adrian had no simple answer.

"I don't know.""

Lucas looked disappointed.

"You don't know?""

Adrian looked at his son.

"Sometimes people can love you and still hurt you.""

Lucas thought about that.

Then nodded slowly.

The next morning, Adrian confronted Daniel again.

But this time, he wasn't alone.

Olivia came.

So did Lucas.

No more secrets.

No more people deciding what they were allowed to know.

Daniel looked at them.

"I expected this.""

Adrian placed the payment record on the table.

"You took money from Nathan.""

Daniel looked at it.

"Yes.""

Olivia's face changed.

"Why?""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Because I was trying to buy time.""

"For what?""

"For the truth.""

Nobody spoke.

Daniel continued.

"Nathan wasn't the only person involved.""

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

"Who else?""

Daniel looked at him.

The hesitation frightened him.

"Someone from the company.""

"Who?""

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a photograph.

Not old.

Recent.

A meeting.

Nathan sitting across from someone.

Adrian took the photo.

Then froze.

Because the person sitting across from Nathan...

Was someone Adrian had trusted for years.

Someone who knew every business secret.

Every password.

Every decision.

The person who had replaced Nathan after the investigation.

His current chief financial officer.

The man who had always called him brother.

Daniel whispered:

"Nathan didn't steal your family alone.""

Adrian stared at the photograph.

"And he didn't steal your company alone either.""

A message appeared on Adrian's phone.

From the same unknown number.

One sentence.

*If you want the final truth, come alone.*

Then another message arrived.

A photo.

Olivia.

Lucas.

Taken just minutes earlier.

Adrian's blood turned cold.

The final secret wasn't buried in the past.

May you like

It was still alive.

And someone was watching them.
