Chapter 10: The Mother Nobody Knew

The room stopped breathing.

That was the only way I could describe it.

One sentence.

One name.

One accusation.

And suddenly every person in that room was looking at me like I was holding a secret I didn’t even know existed.

I stared at Daniel.

“What did you just say?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Marcus stepped between us.

“Be careful.””

His voice was low.

Not threatening.

Protective.

Daniel nodded.

“I’m not here to hurt her.””

“Then explain.””

Daniel looked at the envelope.

“The truth about Emma’s mother isn’t about biology.””

My confusion deepened.

“Then what is it about?””

Daniel looked at me.

“It’s about what happened the night Emma came into this world.””

Alicia looked down.

Arthur looked away.

Vanessa became completely still.

I noticed every reaction.

Every tiny movement.

And suddenly I understood something.

Everyone had been hiding something from me.

Not just Marcus.

Everyone.

I looked at my husband.

“Did you know?””

Marcus immediately shook his head.

“No.””

His answer came so quickly that I believed him.

That somehow hurt more.

Because it meant the people who had hidden things from him had also hidden them from me.

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were more documents.

“I found these years ago.””

Arthur’s face hardened.

“You had no right.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I had every right.””

Marcus looked between them.

“What are those?””

Daniel pulled out one paper.

“Adoption records.””

The word hit the room.

I felt my stomach drop.

Marcus frowned.

“Adoption?””

Daniel nodded.

“Not Emma’s.””

He looked at me.

“Yours.””

The room went silent.

I laughed once.

A confused, nervous sound.

“No.””

Daniel didn’t react.

“Nia, you were adopted as a baby.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

I looked at Marcus.

He looked just as shocked.

“I would know.””

Daniel’s expression softened.

“That’s what happens when the people raising you decide the truth is too dangerous.””

My mind raced.

My childhood.

My parents.

The stories I had always known.

The little details I never questioned.

Could they all be wrong?

“No.””

I stepped back.

“This doesn’t make sense.””

Alicia moved closer.

“Nia…”

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She looked devastated.

“No.””

Daniel answered.

“She didn’t.””

Everyone looked at him.

He continued.

“That’s the part nobody understands.””

He placed the document on the table.

“The secret wasn’t about Emma.””

He looked at Marcus.

“It was about Nia.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“What does my wife have to do with this?””

Daniel looked at Arthur.

“Your father knew.””

Marcus turned slowly.

“Dad?””

Arthur didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Marcus’s face fell.

“You knew?””

Arthur looked broken.

“I found out recently.””

“Recently?””

Arthur swallowed.

“I was trying to understand the connection.””

I stepped toward him.

“Connection to what?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel spoke.

“To Emma’s birth.””

I looked at my daughter.

My beautiful little girl.

The child everyone had fought over.

The child everyone had lied around.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because Emma wasn’t hidden because she was dangerous.””

A pause.

“She was hidden because someone was afraid of what would happen if her parents discovered the truth.””

Marcus looked angry.

“Who?””

Daniel glanced toward Vanessa.

She closed her eyes.

Marcus noticed.

“Again?””

Vanessa whispered:

“I didn’t know everything.””

Marcus laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because it’s true.””

She wiped a tear away.

“I knew about Alicia.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

“I knew she was pregnant.””

Alicia looked at her.

“You knew?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I found out before Marcus did.””

Marcus stared.

“And you said nothing?””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“How?””

Her voice became smaller.

“By making sure Alicia disappeared.””

Nobody moved.

Marcus looked disgusted.

“You ruined her life.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Emma.

“I thought I was saving yours.””

Nobody believed her.

Not even herself.

Daniel closed the folder.

“The problem is, Vanessa wasn’t the only person making decisions.””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel reached into the folder again.

He removed another document.

“This is the final piece.””

Marcus looked at it.

“What is it?””

Daniel handed it to him.

Marcus read.

Then his eyes widened.

“Nia…”

I felt afraid.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“This document says your biological mother and Alicia knew each other.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“That’s why Emma was connected to you before anyone knew.””

I looked at Alicia.

She looked like she wanted to cry.

“You were there.””

I whispered.

Alicia nodded.

“The day you were born.””

The room disappeared.

The voices.

The lights.

The Christmas tree.

Everything.

“You knew me?””

Alicia’s tears fell.

“I knew your mother.””

I couldn’t speak.

Marcus took my hand.

“Nia.””

I looked at him.

And for the first time that night, we were both lost.

Not husband and wife.

Not parents.

Just two people standing in the middle of a truth that had been waiting years to be found.

Then Daniel looked at the envelope.

“There’s still one thing nobody has opened.””

Arthur’s face changed.

“What?””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“The letter from Emma’s real father.””

Marcus tightened his grip.

“Who is he?””

Daniel looked toward the Christmas tree.

Then at the envelope.

May you like

And said:

“The answer is inside.””
