Chapter 12: The Ghost From the Past
The photograph sat between us.
Nobody wanted to touch it.
Like the image itself carried something dangerous.
Marcus stared at the person in the picture.
“Who is that?””
Arthur didn’t answer.
His silence was louder than any confession.
Marcus looked at him.
“Dad.””
Arthur looked defeated.
“I never thought you would see this.””
That sentence broke something.
Because it wasn’t denial.
It was confirmation.
Marcus placed the photo on the table.
“Tell me.””
Arthur swallowed.
“The person in that picture…”
He stopped.
Then whispered:
“Is your mother.””
Marcus went still.
I watched the shock cross his face.
His mother.
The woman he believed was gone.
The woman whose name was barely spoken in the house.
“No.””
Arthur nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus shook his head.
“She died.””
Arthur looked down.
“That’s what you were told.””
The room became silent.
Emma shifted slightly in my arms.
I held her closer.
Marcus looked lost.
“All my life…”
His voice cracked.
“All my life, you let me believe she was dead?””
Arthur closed his eyes.
“I thought it was safer.””
Marcus laughed.
A painful laugh.
“Safer.””
He looked around.
“That word again.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Your father didn’t know how deep it went.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Then tell me.””
Daniel nodded.
“Your mother discovered something years ago.””
“What?””
Daniel looked at Emma.
“The same thing everyone is trying to hide now.””
Marcus waited.
“The family history.””
I frowned.
“What family history?””
Daniel looked at me.
“The connection between your family and Nia’s.””
My heart tightened.
Again.
Everything returned to me.
My adoption.
My mother.
Emma.
Alicia.
Too many pieces.
Not enough answers.
Marcus looked at Arthur.
“Did Mom know Nia’s family?””
Arthur nodded.
“Yes.””
I stared.
“How?””
Arthur looked at me.
“Your biological mother and my wife were close.””
I felt dizzy.
“My biological mother?””
Arthur nodded.
“They worked together.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Doing what?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel spoke.
“Protecting children.””
The room went quiet.
I looked at him.
“What children?””
Daniel’s expression became serious.
“Children who were being hidden because powerful people didn’t want their stories known.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“And Emma?””
Daniel nodded.
“Emma was one of those stories.””
I looked down at my daughter.
A three-year-old girl sleeping peacefully while adults revealed a history she never asked for.
Marcus noticed.
He came closer.
“We’re going to protect her.””
I looked at him.
“How do we even know what we’re protecting her from?””
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa spoke.
Quietly.
“I know.””
Everyone turned.
She looked exhausted.
“I know who started this.””
Marcus stared.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at Arthur.
Arthur’s face changed.
“No.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
She looked at Marcus.
“The person who wanted Emma gone…”
A pause.
“The person who made Alicia disappear…”
Another pause.
“The person who controlled your family for years…”
She swallowed.
“Was your grandfather.””
The room froze.
Arthur looked horrified.
“My father?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He knew about Emma before anyone else.””
Marcus stepped back.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel shook his head.
“It’s not.””
He reached into the folder one more time.
This time he removed a document with a signature.
Marcus looked at it.
Then his face changed.
“What is this?””
Daniel answered:
“The agreement your grandfather created.””
Marcus read the paper.
His expression turned from confusion…
to anger.
“To erase Emma.””
Nobody moved.
The Christmas lights reflected in his eyes.
“He wanted to erase my daughter.””
Arthur whispered:
“I didn’t know.””
Marcus looked at him.
“But you knew enough to hide everything.””
Arthur had no answer.
Then the front window shattered.
Everyone screamed.
The sound of breaking glass filled the room.
I grabbed Emma.
Marcus moved in front of us instantly.
Arthur turned toward the window.
And his face went pale.
Because standing outside in the snow…
was the one person nobody expected to see.
An elderly man.
Holding a cane.
Watching the Christmas dinner through the broken glass.
Daniel whispered:
“He came himself.””
Marcus stared.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at him.
May you like
And said:
“Your grandfather.””
