Chapter 3: The Name Written Inside

Marcus didn’t move.

His hand hovered above the envelope.

The entire room waited.

Even the Christmas tree seemed too bright for the moment.

I stood beside him, holding Emma while my husband stared at a piece of paper that apparently had the power to destroy everything we built.

“Open it,” I whispered.

Marcus looked at me.

Pain filled his eyes.

“Nia…”

“I don’t want another person deciding what we’re allowed to know.””

Arthur lowered his gaze.

I knew then.

Whatever was inside that envelope, he had been carrying it for years.

Marcus finally picked it up.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why are you scared?””

Her lips parted.

For a moment, she looked like she wanted to tell the truth.

Then her expression hardened again.

“I’m not scared.””

Marcus held up the envelope.

“Then why are you begging me not to open it?””

No answer.

The room stayed silent.

I watched Vanessa carefully.

Before tonight, I thought she was simply difficult.

The kind of person who needed attention.

The kind of person who measured her worth by expensive clothes and perfect appearances.

But this wasn’t jealousy.

This was panic.

Real panic.

Arthur walked closer.

“Marcus.””

Marcus turned.

“Yes?””

“Before you read that, I need you to understand something.””

Marcus waited.

“Everything I did was because I thought I was protecting you.””

Marcus laughed once.

A painful sound.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

He looked around the room.

“Protecting me.””

His eyes moved to me.

“Protecting her.””

Then to Emma.

“But nobody asked what we needed.””

Emma reached toward Marcus.

“Daddy.””

He immediately softened.

He took her hand.

“I’m right here.””

That was the moment Vanessa looked away.

A tiny movement.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

She couldn’t stand seeing Marcus love Emma.

Why?

The question had been sitting inside my mind since she threw that bowl.

Why did my daughter threaten her so much?

Arthur noticed me watching Vanessa.

“Nia.””

I looked at him.

“Please.””

His voice was heavy.

“Whatever happens next, remember this.””

I waited.

“Emma is innocent.””

My heart cracked.

Of course she was.

She was three years old.

She didn’t know family secrets.

She didn’t know why adults whispered.

She only knew someone hurt her feelings at Christmas dinner.

I touched her hair.

“I know.””

Arthur nodded.

Then he looked at Marcus.

“Open it.””

Marcus broke the seal.

The sound was small.

Almost nothing.

But Vanessa reacted like she had heard an explosion.

“Stop!””

Everyone turned.

She stepped forward.

Marcus held the envelope tighter.

“Why?””

Her breathing changed.

“I said stop.””

Arthur’s voice became colder.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“Please.””

That single word shocked me.

Because Vanessa didn’t look angry anymore.

She looked desperate.

Arthur shook his head.

“It’s too late.””

Marcus slowly pulled out the paper inside.

I couldn’t see the words.

Not yet.

His eyes moved across the page.

Once.

Then again.

His face changed.

The anger disappeared.

The confusion disappeared.

Only shock remained.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

Marcus looked at Arthur.

“You knew?””

Arthur nodded.

“I did.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Then back at the paper.

His voice became quiet.

“Nia…”

I stepped closer.

“What?””

He looked at me.

And I knew whatever he had read had changed something.

Because my husband looked at me like he was seeing the beginning of a completely different story.

“Why didn’t you ever tell me?””

My heart stopped.

“I don’t understand.””

He looked down at the paper again.

Then he said something that made the entire room freeze.

“Because this says Emma’s mother…”

He stopped.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Arthur closed his eyes.

Marcus continued reading.

And then the name on the page made Vanessa collapse into the nearest chair.

I stepped forward.

“Marcus, what does it say?””

He looked toward the sealed envelope.

Then toward Vanessa.

And in a voice barely above a whisper, he said:

“It says Emma was never supposed to be a secret from me.””

The Christmas tree lights continued blinking.

Emma cried softly in my arms.

May you like

Marcus held the paper with trembling hands.

And Vanessa stared at the envelope like it had just brought back the one truth she had spent years trying to bury.
