Chapter 9: The Stranger at Christmas Dinner
Nobody wanted to open the door.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Not the fear.
Not the confusion.
The hesitation.
Everyone in that room knew something I didn’t.
Marcus stood near the hallway.
His body was tense.
“Dad.””
Arthur didn’t respond.
“Who is outside?””
Arthur looked at the door.
Then at Marcus.
“I hoped this day would never come.””
Marcus’s face tightened.
“Answer me.””
Arthur closed his eyes.
“His name is Daniel.””
Alicia immediately stepped back.
Like the name itself had pushed her.
Marcus noticed.
“You know him.””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
The knocking came again.
“Arthur.””
The voice outside was calm.
Almost polite.
That made it worse.
Marcus walked closer.
“Open the door.””
Arthur grabbed his arm.
“No.””
Marcus looked at him.
“No?””
His voice was quiet.
“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.””
Arthur released him.
The door opened.
A man stood outside.
Late fifties.
Black coat.
Gray hair.
A confident expression.
Snow covered his shoulders.
He looked past Marcus.
And smiled.
“Finally.””
Nobody welcomed him.
Nobody moved.
The man stepped inside anyway.
His eyes scanned the room.
The Christmas tree.
The envelope.
The family.
Then Emma.
His smile faded.
“So she’s here.””
I immediately stepped between him and my daughter.
Marcus moved beside me.
“Who are you?””
The man looked at him.
“You really don’t remember me?””
Marcus frowned.
“No.””
The man smiled sadly.
“I suppose your father made sure of that.””
Arthur’s voice was sharp.
“Leave.””
The man looked at him.
“You don’t get to erase me anymore.””
Marcus looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Daniel removed his coat.
“My name is Daniel Hayes.””
Arthur looked furious.
“Marcus, don’t listen to him.””
Daniel laughed.
“Still doing that?””
Marcus turned.
“Doing what?””
Daniel looked directly at Marcus.
“Controlling the story.””
The room went silent.
Marcus crossed his arms.
“Explain.””
Daniel looked at Emma again.
Then back at him.
“I knew your daughter before you did.””
My heart tightened.
Marcus stepped forward.
“What?””
Daniel nodded.
“I was there when she was born.””
Alicia looked away.
Arthur looked angry.
Marcus stared.
“Who are you?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“I’m the person your family spent years pretending didn’t exist.””
He reached into his coat.
Everyone tensed.
But he only pulled out a small folder.
He placed it on the table.
“This is the proof.””
Marcus didn’t touch it.
“What proof?””
Daniel looked at Arthur.
“Tell him.””
Arthur said nothing.
Daniel smiled.
“That’s what I thought.””
Marcus opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Old hospital records.
Photographs.
Names.
Dates.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then stopped.
His face changed.
I watched him read.
I watched him become someone else.
“What?””
He looked at Daniel.
“You were there.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at Arthur.
“Why?””
Arthur didn’t answer.
Marcus looked back at Daniel.
“Why were you there?””
Daniel’s answer was quiet.
“Because Emma’s birth wasn’t the only thing your family hid.””
Alicia covered her mouth.
Marcus stared.
“What else?””
Daniel looked at the envelope.
Then at Emma.
“The reason everyone fought so hard to keep her away…”
A pause.
“…was because Emma was connected to more than one secret.””
Vanessa suddenly stood.
“Stop.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You’re still protecting the wrong people.””
Her face turned pale.
Marcus noticed.
Again.
“You know him too.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Marcus’s voice lowered.
“How many people knew?””
Nobody spoke.
He looked around the room.
His family.
His past.
His secrets.
Then he looked at Emma.
And his expression softened.
No matter what happened next, that was still his little girl.
Daniel noticed.
“That’s why I came.””
Marcus looked at him.
“For what?””
Daniel picked up the envelope.
Not opening it.
Just touching it.
“To make sure Emma finally gets the truth.””
The room froze.
Marcus stepped forward.
“You know what’s inside?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“What is it?””
Daniel looked at Arthur.
Then Vanessa.
Then Alicia.
And finally Marcus.
“It’s the reason your father, your former love, and your wife have all been protecting different versions of the same lie.””
I felt my heart stop.
“My wife?””
Everyone looked at me.
Marcus turned.
“Nia…”
Daniel looked confused.
“Wait.””
He looked at Marcus.
“She doesn’t know?””
Marcus shook his head.
Daniel slowly stepped back.
Then he whispered:
“Then they never told you the most important part.””
The lights flickered.
Emma held onto my hand.
Marcus stared at Daniel.
“What important part?””
Daniel looked directly at me.
May you like
And said:
“The truth about who Emma’s mother really was.””
