Chapter 5: The Woman Who Came Back

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The woman stood beneath the hallway light, holding a small overnight bag in her hand.

Snow covered the shoulders of her coat.

Her eyes moved across the room.

The Christmas tree.

The ruined dinner.

The envelope.

Then finally…

Emma.

My daughter looked at her with sleepy, confused eyes.

The woman’s expression changed.

Not fear.

Not surprise.

Something deeper.

Pain.

Marcus was the first to speak.

“Alicia?””

The woman’s lips trembled.

“Yes.””

His face turned pale.

“How?””

She swallowed.

“I didn’t know where else to go.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“You have no right to come here.””

Alicia looked at her.

The two women stared at each other.

And immediately I understood.

This wasn’t the first time they had faced each other.

“You haven’t changed,” Alicia said quietly.

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“Neither have you.””

Marcus looked between them.

“Can someone explain what is happening?””

Alicia looked at him.

“I came because you deserve to know.””

Arthur stepped forward.

“That’s why I kept the letter.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You knew she was alive?””

Arthur looked down.

“Yes.””

The betrayal on Marcus’s face was impossible to miss.

“You knew?””

“I thought I was protecting you.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

He looked around the room.

“Everyone keeps protecting me from the truth.””

Alicia’s eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to tell you.””

Marcus stared.

“Then why didn’t you?””

The question hung between them.

Alicia looked toward Emma.

And that was when I saw it.

The way she looked at my daughter.

Like she already knew her.

My heart started pounding.

I stepped slightly in front of Emma.

“Why are you looking at my child like that?””

Alicia looked at me.

Her face softened.

“I’m sorry.””

“That didn’t answer my question.””

She nodded.

“You’re right.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Answer her.””

Alicia took a shaky breath.

“Because I’ve spent three years wondering if she was okay.””

The room went completely still.

Three years.

My arms tightened around Emma.

Marcus looked confused.

“What are you saying?””

Alicia looked at him.

“I’m saying I know Emma.””

My heart stopped.

“No.””

The word came out before I could stop it.

Alicia immediately shook her head.

“Not the way you think.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Then explain.””

She looked at the envelope.

“That letter was supposed to explain everything.””

Vanessa laughed.

“She always knows how to make herself look innocent.””

Alicia turned toward her.

“You destroyed more than anyone.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“Careful.””

“No.””

Alicia’s voice became stronger.

“I spent years staying silent because I thought silence would protect people.””

She looked at Marcus.

“But it only protected the wrong ones.””

Marcus looked at Arthur.

“Dad?””

Arthur nodded slowly.

“She’s telling the truth.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

The words seemed to physically hurt him.

I watched my husband struggle to process a lifetime of hidden information.

Then Emma moved.

She reached toward Alicia.

Everyone noticed.

Alicia froze.

“Emma?””

My daughter whispered something.

So quietly I almost didn’t hear it.

“Mommy said your name.””

The air disappeared from the room.

Marcus looked at me.

I looked at Emma.

Then Alicia.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Alicia covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Who told you that?””

Emma looked at her.

“The picture.””

My mind raced.

“What picture?””

Emma pointed toward the shelf near the Christmas tree.

There was a framed photo I had never paid attention to.

A small photo.

An old one.

Alicia looked at it.

And immediately broke down.

Marcus walked over and picked it up.

His expression changed.

“What is this?””

I stepped closer.

In the photograph was a younger Alicia.

Arthur.

And a baby.

A baby I had never seen before.

Marcus stared.

His voice became almost a whisper.

“Why do I have a picture of this?””

Arthur looked at the floor.

Because he knew.

He knew what Marcus was about to realize.

Vanessa suddenly grabbed the envelope.

Everyone turned.

She held it against her chest.

“No one is opening this.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Give me that.””

She backed away.

“No.””

Arthur’s voice became sharp.

“Vanessa.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand what happens if he reads the rest.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“What happens?””

Vanessa looked at him.

May you like

And whispered:

“You lose the family you think you have.””
