Chapter 7: The Lie Hidden in Four Words
The words stayed there.
Printed on the envelope.
Four words that seemed impossible.
*FROM YOUR REAL FATHER.*
Marcus stared at them.
I watched the color disappear from his face.
Not slowly.
All at once.
Like someone had reached inside him and turned off the person I knew.
“No,” he whispered.
Alicia looked down.
Arthur closed his eyes.
And Vanessa…
Vanessa looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
That was the detail I couldn’t ignore.
She already knew.
Marcus lifted his head.
“Who wrote this?””
Nobody answered.
His grip tightened around the envelope.
“I asked who wrote this.””
Arthur stepped forward.
“Marcus—”
“No.””
His voice cracked through the room.
“No more protecting me.””
The Christmas music playing softly from the corner suddenly felt cruel.
A cheerful melody in the middle of a family falling apart.
Marcus looked at Alicia.
“Is it true?””
Alicia’s eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
“Yes, you do.””
He held up the envelope.
“Am I Emma’s father?””
Alicia looked at Emma.
Then back at him.
“Yes.””
The answer came immediately.
No hesitation.
No uncertainty.
Marcus exhaled shakily.
“Then why does this say real father?””
Nobody moved.
Emma looked between us, confused.
I lowered myself slightly.
“Sweetheart, why don’t you sit with Mommy for a minute?””
She nodded.
But before I could move, Marcus reached out.
“Wait.””
His eyes never left Alicia.
“I need to understand.””
Alicia nodded.
“You deserve that.””
She took a slow breath.
“When Emma was born, there was a reason I left.””
Marcus looked hurt.
“You left me.””
“I know.””
“You disappeared.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe…”
His voice broke.
Alicia looked away.
“I thought it was the only way.””
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
A quiet, bitter laugh.
“Here we go.””
Everyone looked at her.
She shook her head.
“You’re all acting like Alicia is some innocent woman who had no choice.””
Alicia’s face hardened.
“And you’re acting like you didn’t threaten me.””
Marcus turned.
“Threaten her?””
Vanessa froze.
Arthur looked at her.
“Enough.””
Marcus looked from one person to another.
“What happened?””
Nobody answered.
So he walked closer to Vanessa.
“What did you do?””
She swallowed.
“I tried to fix a situation.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Vanessa looked at Emma.
“I knew a baby would change everything.””
Marcus followed her gaze.
“What does that mean?””
Her eyes became wet.
“You had a future.””
Marcus stared.
“With who?””
Vanessa didn’t speak.
But she didn’t have to.
The silence revealed it.
Marcus stepped back.
“No.””
I felt my chest tighten.
Vanessa whispered:
“We were together before Nia.””
The room went completely still.
I knew Vanessa had always been around the family.
I knew she and Marcus had history.
But I never knew this.
Marcus looked at me immediately.
“Nia…”
I shook my head.
“Don’t.””
Not because I was angry.
Because I couldn’t handle another truth landing on top of everything else.
Marcus turned back.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa’s face crumpled.
“Because I knew you would choose her.””
Alicia looked shocked.
“Choose me?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You had a baby.””
The bitterness returned.
“You had the one thing I could never give him.””
Emma.
That was what she meant.
My daughter.
Vanessa looked at her like she represented everything she lost.
Marcus saw it.
And his expression changed.
“You blamed a child.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
His voice was colder now.
“You blamed my daughter.””
Vanessa looked away.
Arthur reached for the envelope.
“Marcus.””
Marcus looked at him.
“I want to know what’s inside.””
Arthur nodded.
Slowly, he opened it.
Inside was a folded letter.
And a small photograph.
Marcus picked up the photo first.
His hands froze.
I couldn’t see it clearly.
But I saw his reaction.
“What?””
Alicia covered her mouth.
Marcus turned the photo around.
It showed a hospital room.
A newborn baby.
And three people standing beside the bed.
Alicia.
Arthur.
And a man I didn’t recognize.
Marcus stared at the stranger.
“Who is that?””
Arthur looked at the photo.
His voice was barely audible.
“Your brother.””
The room exploded into silence.
Marcus frowned.
“My brother?””
Arthur nodded.
“You were never supposed to find out this way.””
Marcus looked confused.
“I don’t have a brother.””
Arthur looked toward the letter.
“That’s what I wanted you to believe.””
My heart dropped.
Because somehow, the secret wasn’t only about Emma.
It was bigger.
Much bigger.
Marcus unfolded the letter.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
His breathing changed.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
“Marcus?””
He looked at Arthur.
“Is this why you kept me away from him?””
Arthur didn’t respond.
Marcus’s voice became quieter.
“Is this why everyone lied?””
Alicia stepped closer.
“Marcus…”
He looked at her.
“Did you know?””
She looked down.
That was enough.
Marcus closed his eyes.
The pain on his face was unbearable.
Then he read the last line.
And suddenly, his expression changed.
Not sadness.
Not confusion.
Fear.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
Marcus looked at me.
Then at Emma.
And whispered:
“It says Emma wasn’t hidden because of who she was.””
May you like
A pause.
“It says she was hidden because of who wanted her gone.””
