Chapter 6: The Truth Behind Emma’s Name
Vanessa ran out of words.
But somehow, the silence she left behind was louder.
Marcus stared at her.
“You really believe you can still control this?””
She held the envelope tighter.
“I’m trying to stop you from making a mistake.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You’re trying to stop me from knowing.””
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“You have no idea what you’re about to destroy.””
Marcus looked at Emma.
Then at me.
Then back at Vanessa.
“I think you destroyed enough tonight.””
For a moment, Vanessa looked like she might fight.
Then her shoulders dropped.
Slowly, she placed the envelope back on the table.
Arthur picked it up.
But he didn’t open it.
Not yet.
Instead, he looked at Alicia.
“You should tell him.””
Alicia nodded.
“I should have years ago.””
Marcus crossed his arms.
“I’m listening.””
Alicia looked around the room.
At the Christmas decorations.
At the family gathered together.
Then at Emma.
“When I was pregnant, I was scared.””
Marcus frowned.
“Pregnant?””
Alicia nodded.
“With Emma.””
The room froze.
I felt my fingers go numb.
Marcus looked at Emma.
Then Alicia.
“No.””
Alicia’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
My world tilted.
Marcus whispered:
“How?””
Alicia looked at Arthur.
Then Vanessa.
Then finally him.
“Because before Nia, before this family, before this house…”
She paused.
“You and I had a daughter.””
The words hit harder than anything Vanessa had said.
Marcus stepped backward.
“No.””
Alicia cried quietly.
“I know.””
He looked at me.
I didn’t know what expression was on my face.
Shock.
Pain.
Confusion.
All of it.
Emma was holding onto me, unaware that the adults around her were watching their entire world collapse.
Marcus looked at Alicia.
“If she’s my daughter…”
Alicia nodded.
“She is.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I would have known.””
Arthur looked down.
“I should have told you.””
Marcus turned toward him.
“You should have.””
The guilt on Arthur’s face was immediate.
“I thought I was protecting your future.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“My future?””
He pointed toward Emma.
“This is my daughter.””
Alicia nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you let me believe…”
She interrupted softly.
“I never wanted to leave her.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What?””
Alicia wiped her tears.
“Vanessa knows what happened.””
All eyes moved.
Vanessa went still.
Marcus’s expression changed.
“Vanessa?””
Alicia looked at her.
“You told me I had to disappear.””
The room became silent.
Vanessa’s face lost all color.
“I was trying to help.””
“No.””
Alicia shook her head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Explain.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Arthur’s voice was quiet.
“Tell him.””
Vanessa looked at Arthur.
“You’re really doing this?””
“Yes.””
She laughed softly.
A broken sound.
“You all want me to be the monster.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody needed to.
Vanessa looked at Emma.
Then back at Marcus.
“I was afraid.””
Marcus stared.
“Afraid of what?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
And for the first time, she didn’t look cruel.
She looked desperate.
“I was afraid that when you found out about Emma…”
She stopped.
Marcus waited.
“What?””
Vanessa whispered:
“That you would never choose me again.””
Nobody moved.
The Christmas lights continued glowing.
Alicia looked down.
Arthur closed his eyes.
And Marcus stared at Vanessa like he was seeing her for the first time.
Then Emma suddenly looked toward the table.
Toward the envelope.
“Daddy?””
Marcus looked at her.
“What, sweetheart?””
She pointed.
“Is that mine?””
Everyone froze.
Because the envelope wasn’t just addressed to Emma.
It carried another name underneath.
A name written so faintly nobody had noticed before.
Marcus picked it up.
His fingers shook.
And when he read the second line, his face changed completely.
Because underneath:
FOR EMMA — OPEN WITH MARCUS
May you like
were four words that revealed the secret nobody expected.
*FROM YOUR REAL FATHER.*
