Chapter 10: The Name on the Birth Certificate
“Ask Elena who was in the delivery room when you were born.””
Maya read the message aloud, then looked at Marcus.
He had gone completely still.
Detective Harris took the phone from her, photographed the message, and handed it back.
“Did the sender identify themselves?””
“No.””
“Have you received threats from this number before?””
“Different numbers. The messages started after we found the red box.””
Harris nodded to an officer standing near the doorway.
“Get the communications team working on these numbers. I want every available detail.””
Then he turned toward Daniel.
“Mr. Cross, you said you were present when Maya's birth certificate was prepared?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. I wasn't there when she was born. I was in another state, trying to get my life together. Elena told me she was pregnant, but by the time I returned, Maya had already been born.””
Marcus stared at him.
“You said you were her father.””
“Biologically, I believe I am.””
“You believe?””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“I never had the chance to get a DNA test. Elena and I were together before she married you. The timing made it possible, but I never wanted to force her to choose between us.””
Maya's stomach twisted.
“So you don't know for certain?””
Daniel looked at her.
“No. I don't. And I won't lie to you about that.””
For the first time since he'd appeared on the porch, Maya found herself respecting his answer.
It didn't erase thirteen years of absence.
But it was honest.
Marcus paced toward the window, then turned back.
“What does the birth certificate have to do with Peter Lang?””
Detective Harris answered before Daniel could.
“If someone falsified Maya's birth records, it could explain why Peter believed he had grounds to challenge her guardianship or trust. We need the original documents.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“The hospital must have them.””
“Perhaps. But first, I want to speak with Elena.””
Maya immediately reached for her coat.
“Then we're going to the hospital.””
Harris held up a hand.
“Not until the officers finish securing this house.””
“Someone threatened my mother, and now you're telling me to wait?””
“I'm telling you that the person sending those messages may be watching the hospital.””
“Then put officers there!””
“We already have.””
Maya looked at her father.
“Dad?””
Marcus picked up his keys.
“We're going.””
Harris stared at him for a moment, then sighed.
“Fine. Two officers will accompany you. Nobody goes anywhere alone.””
As they left, Maya glanced back at the broken front window.
The house had once been the only place she associated with safety.
Now it felt like a building full of traps.
At the hospital, two uniformed officers stood outside Elena's room. A nurse was checking her blood pressure when Maya entered.
Elena immediately reached for her daughter.
“Are you hurt?””
“No, Mom.””
“Did Vanessa come near you?””
“No.””
Elena searched Maya's face, looking for signs of a lie.
Then she noticed Daniel standing behind Marcus.
Her hand flew to her mouth.
“Daniel.””
He stopped in the doorway.
For a long moment, they simply looked at each other.
Thirteen years of fear, grief, and unanswered questions passed between them.
Finally, Elena whispered, “I thought you were dead.””
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“I thought you were gone.””
“I was here.””
“I know that now.””
He stepped closer, but Elena lifted her hand.
“Not yet.””
Daniel stopped immediately.
“I understand.””
Maya sat beside her mother.
“Mom, I need you to tell me something.””
Elena turned toward her.
“Anything.””
“Who was in the delivery room when I was born?””
Elena's expression changed.
The nurse paused beside the bed.
Marcus noticed.
“Elena?””
His wife looked toward the closed door.
“Can we have a moment alone?””
The nurse nodded and stepped outside. Detective Harris followed her, leaving the door slightly open while the uniformed officers remained in the corridor.
Elena took Maya's hand.
“When you were born, Daniel wasn't there. Marcus was.””
Marcus looked surprised.
“I was?””
“You came to the hospital because I asked you to. Daniel and I had agreed that whatever happened between us, you would have a stable home. You loved me.
You loved Maya. You wanted to be her father.””
Marcus swallowed.
“I remember holding her.””
“You were the first person who held her after the nurses cleaned her.””
Maya looked between them.
“Then why does the message say you lied?””
Elena's fingers tightened around hers.
“Because someone changed the paperwork after you were born.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“What paperwork?””
“The original birth certificate listed Daniel as your biological father. You were listed as the legal guardian who would raise her if Daniel couldn't. But after I was discharged, Vanessa offered to help me file the final documents.””
Marcus's face darkened.
“You trusted her with the paperwork?””
“I had no reason not to. She was your assistant at the time. She told me she'd taken care of everything.””
Maya's voice trembled.
“What did she change?””
Elena closed her eyes.
“She changed the certificate to make it appear that Marcus was your biological father. Then she arranged for the original to be sealed.””
Marcus sat heavily in the chair.
“But why would she do that?””
“Because she knew about Daniel's trust,” Elena said.
“She knew the money could only pass to Maya if Daniel was officially declared dead or legally incapacitated. If you were recorded as Maya's biological father, she could use your marriage and your household as a way to control her.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That wasn't enough. The trust was protected.””
“Not after she altered the agreement,” Elena replied.
“She planned to make herself Maya's legal guardian if anything happened to Marcus.””
Maya felt sick.
“So the entire family she built was a way to get my money?””
“Not entirely,” Elena said softly.
“Vanessa wanted Marcus, too. She wanted the house, the family, the status. But the money gave her a reason to keep going.””
Marcus stared at the floor.
“She could have asked me for help. I would have helped her.””
Elena looked at him sadly.
“Some people don't want help, Marcus. They want control.””
Maya thought of the trophy on the gymnasium stage, the public accusation, and Vanessa's furious demand that she delete the messages.
“What happened to the original certificate?””
Elena looked at Daniel.
He reached into his coat and removed a small envelope.
“I found this in Julianne's storage unit.””
Inside was a photocopy of a hospital record, a page bearing the hospital's seal, and a handwritten note.
The record listed Maya's date of birth.
Beneath it were three names.
*Mother: Elena Bennett.*
*Biological Father: Daniel Cross.*
*Witness: Peter Lang.*
Marcus stared at the last name.
“Peter was at the hospital?””
Elena nodded.
“He came to visit me that afternoon. He said he wanted to congratulate us. I thought he was being kind.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“He was checking whether the paperwork had been completed.””
Maya examined the handwritten note.
At the bottom, a sentence had been written in red ink.
If the child is ever used to activate the trust, the witness must be contacted.
Maya looked at Detective Harris, who had returned to the doorway.
“What does that mean?””
Harris took the document and studied it.
“It means Peter may have been involved in establishing the trust from the beginning. If his signature appears on the original record, he may have known exactly how Vanessa planned to manipulate it.””
Marcus stood.
“Then we find him.””
Harris nodded.
“We're already searching for him.””
Elena suddenly gripped Maya's wrist.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
Elena's breathing quickened.
“You don't understand. Peter isn't the only one who knows about the original certificate.””
“Who else?”” Maya asked.
Elena looked at Marcus.
“Your father.””
Maya blinked.
“My grandfather?””
Marcus shook his head.
“My father died before Maya was born.””
“No,” Elena whispered.
“Your biological father.””
Silence fell over the room.
Maya stared at Marcus.
“Dad, what does she mean?””
Marcus's lips parted, but no words came.
Elena looked at Daniel.
“Tell her.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Peter was adopted. His biological father was a man named Richard Bennett.””
Marcus stumbled backward.
Richard Bennett had been Marcus's older brother.
The brother whose funeral Marcus had attended at seventeen.
The brother whose death had shaped every decision Marcus made afterward.
Maya felt the room spin.
“Are you saying Peter was my father's nephew?””
Daniel nodded.
“And if Peter is Richard's son, then he has a legal claim to part of the Bennett estate.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Richard never had children.””
“He did,” Elena said.
“He had a son before he died. The family was told the baby hadn't survived.””
Maya's hands went numb.
“Then who am I?””
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“You're still Maya. You're still the girl I carried and loved. None of this changes that.””
But Maya could barely hear her.
For thirteen years, she had believed she was the abandoned daughter of a woman who didn't want her.
Now she had discovered that the man who raised her might not be her biological father, the man claiming to be her biological father might not be related to her at all, and a supposedly dead relative might have been manipulating her life since before she was born.
Detective Harris's radio crackled.
He listened, then looked up sharply.
“We've located Julianne Reed.””
Maya stood.
“Where is she?””
The detective's expression darkened.
“She's at the county morgue.””
Elena began to cry.
“Vanessa found her.””
And as Maya turned toward the door, another message appeared on her phone.
