Chapter 9: The Father on the Porch
“Get away from the window!”” Marcus shouted.
He dragged Maya toward the hallway just as the first gunshot shattered the glass.
The sound was deafening.
Maya screamed and dropped to the floor. Shards scattered across the hardwood, catching the porch light like tiny pieces of ice.
Outside, Daniel threw himself behind a stone planter.
Vanessa stood in the rain with the gun raised.
“You should have stayed gone!”” she screamed.
Daniel pressed himself against the planter.
“You said you'd leave them alone!””
“I gave you thirteen years!””
“You locked Elena in a basement!””
“And you left me to clean up your mess!””
Marcus pulled Maya behind the wall.
“Stay here.””
“Dad, she's shooting at him!””
“I know.””
He grabbed his phone and called emergency services, giving the address while the gunfire stopped.
Outside, Daniel shouted something Maya couldn't hear.
Then came the sound of footsteps pounding across the porch.
Marcus peered through the hallway.
Daniel had run toward the side gate.
Vanessa followed.
Maya scrambled to her feet.
“We have to help him!””
“We're not going outside while she has a gun.””
“But he's my father!””
Marcus turned toward her.
“And you're my daughter. I'm not losing you tonight.””
The words silenced her.
She stood trembling beside him while the dispatcher instructed them to remain inside.
Then a heavy thud sounded against the front door.
“Marcus!”” Daniel shouted.
“Open the door!””
Marcus hesitated.
Maya looked at him.
“Please.””
He unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door inward just far enough for Daniel to slip inside.
Daniel stumbled into the hallway, breathing hard. His coat was torn at the shoulder, and blood ran down one side of his face.
Marcus caught him before he fell.
“Where are you hit?””
“I'm fine.””
“You're bleeding.””
“It's nothing.””
Daniel looked past him.
His gaze landed on Maya.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then Daniel whispered, “You have Elena's eyes.””
Maya felt tears rise.
She wanted to run to him.
She wanted to demand why he had disappeared, why he had allowed her to grow up believing she was unwanted, and why he had waited until now to return.
Instead, she stood frozen.
Daniel seemed to understand.
He didn't reach for her.
“I'm sorry,” he said.
Maya's voice shook.
“Why didn't you come back?””
His face crumpled.
“I tried.””
“Mom said you visited three months ago.””
“I did.””
“Then why didn't you take her out?””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Because I couldn't.””
Marcus's expression hardened.
“You could have called the police.””
“I did. The first time I tried, Vanessa had already convinced them Elena was unstable. The second time, someone warned me that if I came near the house, Maya would be taken away.””
“Who warned you?””
Daniel looked toward the broken window.
“Julianne.””
Maya remembered the name from the detective's call.
“Vanessa's sister?””
Daniel nodded.
“She'd been helping me gather evidence. She told me Vanessa had people watching the house. I thought if I disappeared again, I could protect Elena and Maya from a distance.””
“You thought?”” Marcus demanded.
Daniel flinched.
Marcus stepped closer.
“You left my wife locked in a basement for thirteen years.””
“I didn't know she was there.””
“You knew Vanessa was dangerous.””
“Yes.””
“And you left anyway.””
Daniel lowered his head.
“I thought I was giving her time to expose Vanessa without putting Maya in danger.””
Marcus grabbed his coat.
“You don't get to decide what danger my daughter should face!””
“She's my daughter, too!””
The words rang through the hallway.
Maya stepped between them.
“Stop!””
Both men fell silent.
She looked at Daniel.
“You don't get to call yourself my father just because we're related.””
Daniel swallowed.
“I know.””
“You missed my first day of school. You missed my birthdays. You missed everything.””
“I know.””
“You weren't there when Vanessa told me my mother didn't want me.””
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“I know, sweetheart.””
“Stop saying that!””
Maya struck his chest with both fists.
Daniel didn't move.
She hit him again, crying now.
“You weren't there!””
He stood still until her strength gave out.
Then Maya collapsed against him.
Daniel wrapped his arms around her carefully, as though he feared she might disappear if he held her too tightly.
“I know,” he whispered.
“And I'll spend the rest of my life trying to make it right, if you'll let me.””
Maya cried into his coat.
For a moment, the gunshot, the broken window, and the terrible secrets seemed distant.
Then Marcus's phone rang.
Detective Harris.
Marcus answered immediately.
“Vanessa fired at the house. Daniel is here.””
“Is anyone injured?””
“Daniel has a cut. Maya is safe.””
“Officers are two minutes away. Do not leave the building.””
Marcus looked toward the window.
“She's outside.””
“We have units approaching from both ends of the street.””
Daniel stepped away from Maya.
“You need to tell them to check the garage.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa keeps a second car there. She'll try to leave before they reach the house.””
As if summoned by his words, an engine roared from behind the building.
Marcus moved toward the kitchen.
Daniel caught his arm.
“Don't go after her.””
“She just shot at my daughter!””
“And she'll shoot again if she thinks she has nothing left to lose.””
Marcus stared at him.
Daniel's voice dropped.
“She's not running because she's afraid of prison. She's running because she knows what Julianne has.””
Maya wiped her cheeks.
“What does Julianne have?””
Daniel looked at her.
“The original recording of the night I disappeared.””
A police siren wailed in the distance.
Marcus lowered his phone.
“Then why didn't you bring it to the police?””
“Because it proves Vanessa wasn't the only person involved.””
The room went silent.
Maya looked at Marcus.
“What does he mean?””
Daniel took a shaky breath.
“On the night I disappeared, I went to the house to meet Elena. Vanessa let me inside. She told me Marcus was away and that everything was safe.””
He glanced at Marcus.
“But someone was waiting in the office.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“I saw the person.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked toward the broken window.
“Someone who knew about the trust. Someone who knew about the guardianship agreement. Someone who had access to your office.””
Marcus's face had gone gray.
Maya whispered, “Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he answered.
“Your father's business partner.””
Marcus stared at him.
“I didn't have a business partner thirteen years ago.””
“You did. For six months.””
Maya looked between them.
“Who was it?””
Marcus's lips parted.
He seemed unable to say the name.
Finally, he whispered, “Peter Lang.””
Daniel nodded.
Peter Lang had been Marcus's accountant and closest business adviser. He had helped establish the company Marcus later sold, managed their finances, and handled the paperwork for the guardianship agreement.
He had died in a car accident eleven years earlier.
Maya remembered attending his funeral as a child. Vanessa had held her hand throughout the service and told her that good people sometimes left without warning.
Marcus backed away from Daniel.
“Peter was dead before Elena and I discovered the trust had disappeared.””
“His death was reported eleven years ago,” Daniel replied.
“But Julianne found evidence that he used another identity after leaving town.””
Maya's thoughts raced.
“Why would he do that?””
“Because he helped Vanessa alter the agreement. He knew about the money, and he knew the trust couldn't be touched while I was officially missing.””
Marcus gripped the edge of the desk.
“Peter was my friend.””
“So was I.””
Daniel's voice was quiet.
“And we both trusted the wrong people.””
A police car screeched to a stop outside.
Officers rushed through the front door, weapons drawn. One secured the broken entrance while another escorted Daniel toward the living room for medical attention.
Detective Harris arrived moments later.
He took one look at the shattered window and the blood on Daniel's coat.
“Where's Vanessa?””
“Garage,” Daniel replied.
“She may have escaped.””
Harris spoke into his radio, then turned toward Daniel.
“You're Daniel Cross?””
“Yes.””
“You've been listed as missing for thirteen years.””
“I know.””
“Then you're going to need to explain where you've been.””
Daniel nodded.
“I will.””
Maya stepped forward.
“Detective, he didn't shoot at us. Vanessa did.””
“I understand.””
“Then don't treat him like a criminal.””
Harris softened his expression.
“We'll establish what happened. Right now, I need everyone safe.””
An officer approached with a tablet.
“Detective, we found a vehicle abandoned two streets away. The driver's door is open.””
Harris looked up.
“Any sign of the driver?””
“No. But we found something inside.””
He handed the tablet to the detective.
Harris studied the photograph.
Then he turned the screen toward Marcus.
It showed a passport, a set of keys, and an envelope addressed to *MAYA BENNETT*.
The passport bore a photograph of an older man with dark hair and gray eyes.
The name printed beneath it was *PETER LANG*.
Marcus stared at the screen.
“Peter's alive.””
Detective Harris nodded grimly.
“And the envelope contains a handwritten message.””
Maya leaned closer.
“What does it say?””
Harris read the words aloud.
“If Daniel has returned, the girl must be removed before she learns who really signed her birth certificate.”
Maya felt the blood drain from her face.
“Daniel already told me who my biological father is.””
The detective looked at her.
“That's not what this means.””
He enlarged the photograph of the passport.
On the reverse side, beneath a fresh stamp, was a second line of text.
*LEGAL FATHER: MARCUS BENNETT — IDENTITY SUBJECT TO CHALLENGE.*
Marcus staggered backward.
Daniel caught his arm.
Maya stared at the document.
Then her phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
*YOUR MOTHER LIED TO YOU, MAYA.*
Another message followed.
*DANIEL IS YOUR BIOLOGICAL FATHER. BUT THE MAN WHO SIGNED YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE WAS NEVER MARCUS.*
Maya looked up at the two men standing before her.
One had raised her.
One had fathered her.
And somewhere outside the house, a man who was supposed to be dead had just declared that neither of them had told her the whole truth.
May you like
The final message appeared.
*ASK ELENA WHO WAS IN THE DELIVERY ROOM WHEN YOU WERE BORN.*
