Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Never Her Father
For several seconds, Marcus couldn't move.
The letter trembled in his hands. Behind the white door, Elena was crying. Above them, police officers were calling through the house, asking whether anyone needed medical assistance.
But Marcus heard only one sentence.
Marcus is not the man who signed your original birth certificate.
He looked at Maya.
She stood beside the workbench, clutching the photograph of her mother as though it were the only solid thing left in the world.
“Dad?”” she whispered.
He forced himself to look at her.
“I'm here.””
“Is it true?””
Marcus opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Maya's eyes filled with tears.
“Please don't do what Vanessa did. Don't look at me and decide that lying is easier than telling me the truth.””
“I don't know what that letter means.””
“But Mom does.””
Marcus turned toward the locked white door.
“Elena, explain this.””
A faint scraping sound came from inside.
“I will,” Elena answered.
“But not while Vanessa can hear us.””
“She's upstairs.””
“No. She's gone.””
“How do you know?””
“Because I can hear the front door. She always leaves through the garage when she's frightened.””
Marcus stared at the ceiling.
Even now, Elena knew Vanessa's habits better than he did.
Maya placed the photograph on the workbench.
“Who is my father?””
Elena went quiet.
Then she spoke through the door.
“His name is Daniel Cross.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
The name struck him with the force of a memory he'd spent years trying to forget.
Daniel Cross had been his closest friend before Marcus married Elena. They had met in college, shared an apartment, and built their first business together. Daniel had been the best man at Marcus's wedding.
He had also disappeared from their lives shortly before Maya was born.
Marcus opened his eyes.
“No.””
“Marcus—”
“No. Daniel left the country.””
“He didn't.””
“You told me he betrayed us.””
“I never told you that.””
“Vanessa did!””
The words burst out of him.
He struck the workbench with his palm, rattling the photographs.
Maya stepped back.
Marcus saw her reaction and immediately lowered his hand.
“I'm sorry,” he said.
She didn't answer.
He turned back to the door.
“Elena, you need to tell me everything. Now.””
“I tried to tell you thirteen years ago.””
“Then try again!””
A heavy silence followed.
Finally, Elena said, “Daniel and I were in love before you and I got married.””
Marcus felt the room tilt.
He gripped the edge of the workbench.
“You married me knowing that?””
“I loved you, too. But I was confused, and I was young. Daniel left because he thought he was doing the right thing. By the time I learned I was pregnant, he was gone.””
“Did you try to find him?””
“Yes.””
“And when he came back?””
Elena hesitated.
Marcus stared at the door.
“When did he come back?””
“Three years later. He wanted to meet Maya.””
Maya's heart began hammering.
“Someone wanted to meet me?””
“Yes, sweetheart.””
“Did he know I existed?””
“I sent him letters. I never knew whether he received them. Then one day, he appeared at the house.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I was working late that night.””
“I know.””
“What happened?””
Elena's voice broke.
“Vanessa answered the door.””
Marcus went completely still.
Vanessa had entered their lives after Elena's disappearance, claiming to be a family friend who wanted to help Marcus care for his young daughter. She had been warm, attentive, and seemingly devoted to Maya.
Within a year, she had become his wife.
He had never questioned why she knew so much about his private life.
Now he wondered whether she had known Daniel long before either of them realized it.
“What did she do to him?”” Maya asked.
“I don't know,” Elena replied.
“She told me Daniel had gone away again. She said he had no interest in being a father.””
Marcus gripped the workbench harder.
“And you believed her?””
“I didn't. I tried to contact him, but every message disappeared. Every letter I sent came back unopened. Then Vanessa told me she'd found proof Daniel had been involved in something dangerous.””
“What proof?””
“I never saw it.””
Maya wiped her cheeks.
“So she lied to you, too.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell Dad?””
“I tried. But Vanessa had already convinced him that I was unstable. She said I was having an affair.
She said I was stealing money from our accounts. When I threatened to leave with you, she told me she'd make sure you never saw me again.””
Maya pressed her hand against the door.
“What happened after that?””
Elena took a shaky breath.
“Your father was away on a business trip. Vanessa told me she'd arranged a meeting with someone who could help me prove the truth about Daniel. Instead, she brought me downstairs.””
A terrible silence followed.
“She locked me in,” Elena whispered.
Maya covered her mouth.
Marcus backed away from the workbench as though the room had become too small to contain him.
Thirteen years.
He had slept above his wife for thirteen years.
He had eaten breakfast in the kitchen, watched television in the living room, and tucked his daughter into bed while Elena remained trapped beneath their feet.
His stomach turned.
“Why didn't I hear you?”” he whispered.
“I tried calling your name for months.””
He pressed both hands against his face.
“I was here.””
“I know.””
“I was right here.””
“I know, Marcus.””
A voice called from the top of the basement stairs.
“Mr. Bennett?””
One of the officers had reached them.
Marcus turned.
“Down here!””
Two officers descended, followed by a woman carrying a medical bag. The first officer introduced himself as Detective Harris and immediately assessed the locked door, the chain, and the documents scattered across the workbench.
“Who's inside?””
“My wife,” Marcus answered.
“She's been held here against her will.””
Detective Harris's expression hardened.
“Your wife?””
“Yes.””
“For how long?””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“Thirteen years.””
The detective glanced at his partner.
“Get the fire department down here. We'll need to force that door.””
Maya rushed forward.
“Please hurry. She's been waiting.””
The female officer crouched beside her.
“We're going to get her out, sweetheart.””
Maya nodded, although she wasn't sure she believed anything would ever be simple again.
Detective Harris examined the red box.
“Who found this?””
“I did,” Marcus said.
“Has anything been removed?””
“Only the envelope.””
The detective looked at the letter in his hand.
“May I see it?””
Marcus hesitated, then passed it over.
Harris read the page, his expression changing with each line.
“Daniel Cross,” he murmured.
Marcus looked up sharply.
“You know him?””
The detective didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he took out his phone and searched through a photograph attached to an old case file.
Then he turned the screen toward Maya.
The picture showed a man in his early forties with dark hair, a narrow scar above his left eyebrow, and the same gray eyes Maya saw in the mirror every morning.
Underneath the photograph was a name.
*DANIEL CROSS — REPORTED MISSING, OCTOBER 14, THIRTEEN YEARS AGO.*
Maya stared at the date.
October 14.
Her birthday.
Detective Harris looked at Marcus.
“Mr. Bennett, I need you to answer one question honestly.””
Marcus swallowed.
“What?””
“On the night Daniel Cross disappeared, where were you?””
Before Marcus could answer, a violent crash echoed from upstairs.
The officers drew their weapons.
Someone had entered the house.
May you like
And from somewhere beyond the basement stairs, Vanessa's voice rang out.
“Don't let them open that door!””
