Chapter 13: The Hospital Where Everything Began
Maya read the message three times before she understood what it meant.
*BRING THE ORIGINAL TRUST AGREEMENT TO OLD MERCY HOSPITAL. COME ALONE, OR CHARLOTTE DISAPPEARS FOREVER.*
Her younger sister was somewhere inside an abandoned hospital, trapped with a man who had supposedly died eleven years earlier.
And he wanted the document that had started everything.
“Absolutely not,” Marcus said.
Maya looked up from her phone.
“You don't even know what I'm going to say.””
“You're thinking about going there.””
“Charlotte called me. She was crying.””
“And Peter could have been standing beside her the entire time.””
“He was.””
“Then you understand why you can't go.””
Maya turned toward Detective Harris.
“What if we give him the agreement?””
Harris folded his arms.
“It's evidence. We can't simply hand it over without considering what he'll do with it.””
“He said he'd release her.””
“He also said he'd kill the investigation if we cooperated. Criminals make promises when they need something.””
Maya's hands trembled.
“So we do nothing?””
“No,” Harris replied.
“We use the demand to our advantage.””
He spread a map of the abandoned hospital across the table. Old Mercy had been closed for years, but the original building remained standing. Several entrances had been boarded up, and the maternity wing had suffered extensive fire damage.
“Peter knows the building,” Harris explained.
“If he's taken Charlotte there, he may be using one of the old service entrances. We'll establish a perimeter before anyone approaches.””
Maya pointed to the maternity wing.
“What if he takes her through the basement?””
“We'll cover the exits.””
“And if he sees the officers?””
“He may panic. That's why we need to know exactly what we're walking into.””
Marcus paced beside the window.
“This is my fault.””
Maya looked at him.
“Dad—”
“I signed the guardianship agreement. I trusted Peter with our finances. I let Vanessa handle documents she had no right to touch.””
“You didn't know what they were doing.””
“I should have asked questions.””
Maya stepped closer.
“You're allowed to have been wrong without being responsible for every terrible thing that followed.””
Marcus stared at her.
For the first time that night, she saw something other than guilt in his expression.
Hope.
Then Detective Harris's phone rang.
He listened, his face tightening.
“Understood. Keep the line open.””
He hung up.
“We've got a problem.””
Maya's stomach dropped.
“What?””
“Someone entered the hospital through the north gate six minutes ago. The security camera captured the vehicle.””
“Vanessa?””
“No. Daniel.””
Marcus turned sharply.
“Where is he?””
“We don't know yet. His phone is switched off.””
Maya grabbed her coat.
“Then we need to go.””
Harris caught her eye.
“Listen carefully. You are not going to enter that building without my team. Is that clear?””
Maya nodded, though every instinct told her to run.
Harris handed her a small radio.
“Stay with Marcus until I give the signal. If anything changes, you tell me immediately.””
They drove toward Old Mercy in two unmarked vehicles, keeping their headlights low as they approached the deserted industrial district.
The hospital appeared beyond a row of leafless trees.
Its windows were dark. Blackened brick marked the old maternity wing, and weeds pushed through cracks in the parking lot.
Maya stared at the building.
“This is where I was born.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“And where Charlotte disappeared.””
He looked at her.
“Apparently.””
The word hurt more than she expected.
They parked behind an abandoned pharmacy. Detective Harris joined them and pointed toward the hospital's north entrance.
“Two officers will enter through the service corridor. Another team will cover the loading dock. Nobody moves until we have confirmation that Charlotte is inside.””
Maya looked toward the building.
A light flickered in a second-floor window.
Someone was there.
Her phone vibrated.
*YOU'RE LATE.*
Another message followed.
*MATERNITY WING. ROOM 214.*
Maya showed Harris.
He studied the screen, then nodded to the officers.
“We have a location.””
They moved toward the building.
The side door hung crookedly from its hinges. Inside, the air smelled of damp plaster and burned wood. Their footsteps echoed along a corridor lined with peeling green paint.
Maya stayed close to Marcus while Detective Harris led the way.
At the end of the corridor, a rusted sign pointed toward the maternity ward.
Maya stopped.
“This hallway was in the photograph.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What photograph?””
“The one Vanessa kept in her bedroom. The newspaper clipping about the hospital fire.””
She remembered the headline now.
INFANT PRESUMED DEAD AFTER MATERNITY WING DISASTER.
Below it had been a picture of a nurse carrying a bundle through smoke.
Maya had assumed it was a historical article.
Now she wondered whether the baby in the photograph had been Charlotte.
They reached the stairs.
A sound came from above.
Three knocks.
Then a girl's voice.
“Maya?””
Maya's heart lurched.
“Charlotte!””
Detective Harris raised his hand, signaling everyone to stop.
“Charlotte, this is Detective Harris. Are you alone?””
Silence.
Then Peter's voice drifted down the stairwell.
“She came exactly as I knew she would.””
A figure appeared on the landing.
Peter Lang wore a dark coat and held a pistol at his side. His gray hair was neatly combed, and his face was thinner than it had appeared in the passport photograph.
Behind him stood Charlotte.
She wore the same yellow dress from the picture.
Her hands were bound in front of her.
Maya took a step forward.
“Let her go.””
Peter smiled.
“You have no idea how much you look like your mother.””
“I'm not here to talk about my mother.””
“No. You're here for your sister.””
He placed one hand on Charlotte's shoulder.
The girl flinched.
Maya felt something inside her go cold.
“Don't touch her.””
Peter's smile disappeared.
“Bring me the agreement.””
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Peter Lang, put the weapon down.””
Peter raised the pistol.
“Take another step and the girl dies.””
The officers froze.
Maya looked at Charlotte.
Her sister was crying silently, her eyes fixed on Maya's face.
“It's okay,” Maya called softly.
“I'm here.””
Charlotte shook her head.
“No, you're not supposed to be here.””
Peter tightened his grip.
“Quiet.””
Maya's eyes narrowed.
“What did you tell her?””
“That her entire life was built on a lie.””
Charlotte looked at Maya.
“He said you stole my family.””
Maya swallowed.
“I didn't steal anything.””
Peter laughed.
“Of course you didn't. You were a baby. The adults made the decisions.””
He looked toward Marcus.
“Your father knows exactly what I'm talking about.””
Marcus's face had gone pale.
“Peter, this has to end.””
“You had thirteen years to make it right.””
“I didn't know Charlotte existed.””
“Because you never bothered to look.””
Marcus flinched.
Peter turned back to Maya.
“The trust agreement. Now.””
Maya reached into her bag and removed a folder.
Inside was a certified copy of the original agreement, along with the document Detective Harris had prepared for the exchange.
Peter's eyes sharpened.
“Put it on the floor.””
Maya obeyed.
“Now let Charlotte go.””
Peter looked at the folder, then back at her.
“You think this is about money?””
“Isn't it?””
“No. Money is what people like Vanessa use to explain their greed. This is about what your family took from mine.””
He nodded toward Charlotte.
“She was supposed to inherit the Bennett estate. She was the legitimate child of Richard Bennett's line. Your mother gave birth to twins, and one was quietly reassigned.””
Maya stared at him.
“Twins?””
Peter's expression changed.
For the first time, he seemed genuinely surprised.
“You didn't know?””
Maya looked at Charlotte.
Her sister's face crumpled.
“They told me I was the only one.””
Peter's grip loosened.
Maya seized the moment.
“Charlotte, look at me.””
The girl lifted her head.
“You're not responsible for any of this. Neither am I.””
Peter raised the pistol again.
“Enough.””
He stepped toward the folder.
Then a voice came from behind him.
“Put the gun down, Peter.””
Daniel stood at the end of the upper corridor, blood seeping through the bandage around his head.
Peter spun around.
“You should have stayed dead.””
Daniel looked at Charlotte.
“I'm sorry I couldn't get here sooner.””
Peter's finger tightened on the trigger.
Maya screamed.
A gunshot exploded through the hospital.

The lights went out.
And someone fell screaming into the darkness.
