Chapter 12: The Girl in the Photograph

Maya stared at the photograph until the girl's face blurred.

The child stood in front of a brick house, wearing a yellow dress and holding a birthday cake with thirteen candles.

Her dark hair fell over one shoulder.

Her eyes were Maya's eyes.

Even the small crescent-shaped mark beneath her left eyebrow was identical.

Maya touched her own eyebrow.

“Who is she?””

Marcus took the phone.

“I don't know.””

Elena began shaking.

“Show me.””

Maya turned the screen toward her mother.

Elena stared at the photograph, then covered her mouth with both hands.

“Oh, God.””

“Mom?””

Elena looked at Marcus.

“That's the baby.””

Marcus went pale.

“The baby from the hospital?””

Elena nodded.

“The nurse told me she'd died. She said there had been complications. But that child is alive.””

Maya sat down heavily.

“Is she my sister?””

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“I don't know, sweetheart.””

“You said there was another baby.””

“Yes.””

“Then how can you not know?””

“Because I never saw her again. I never saw her face. I only saw the name on her bassinet.””

Maya looked back at the photograph.

The girl had a small smile, but her eyes seemed distant.

Someone had taken the picture recently. A bright blue bicycle leaned against the brick wall behind her, and a plastic garden chair sat beside the porch.

The photograph had been sent to frighten Maya.

But it had also revealed something impossible.

A child who had supposedly died thirteen years earlier was alive.

And someone wanted Maya to know it.

Detective Harris examined the image on his tablet.

“Do you recognize the house?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

“Could it belong to Peter Lang?””

“Possibly.””

Harris enlarged the photograph.

“The image was taken within the last month. The file metadata hasn't been stripped completely.””

Maya leaned closer.

“Can you find where it was taken?””

“We're working on it.””

“Then find her.””

Harris looked at her carefully.

“We will.””

Maya stood.

“No. You need to understand. If she's my sister, someone has been lying about her existence for thirteen years. If she's connected to the trust, she may be in danger, too.””

“I understand.””

“Then why is everyone treating her like another piece of evidence?””

The detective paused.

“Because whoever sent this photograph may be trying to lure you into doing something reckless.””

Maya's jaw tightened.

“Maybe they should have thought of that before sending me a picture of a girl who looks exactly like me.””

Marcus touched her shoulder.

“Maya, please.””

She stepped away.

“I'm not going to sit here while another person disappears.””

Harris nodded slowly.

“I'm assigning a team to identify the location. In the meantime, I need you to stay with your mother.””

Maya looked at Elena.

Her mother had gone quiet.

“Mom, do you know who the girl's father was?””

Elena shook her head.

“No.””

“Could it have been Daniel?””

Daniel had been waiting outside the room. At the question, he stepped inside.

“I don't know,” he said.

Maya turned toward him.

“Did you know there was another baby?””

“No.””

“Did you know about the hospital records?””

“No.””

“Did you know about Richard?””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I knew Richard was investigating something. He told me he believed Peter was stealing money from the company. He also said there was a child involved, but he never explained what he meant.””

Maya stared at him.

“Why didn't you tell us?””

“Because I didn't know enough to be sure.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Daniel accepted her anger without protest.

“I know.””

Maya looked away.

She hated how much she wanted to believe him.

She hated that he seemed genuinely sorry.

And she hated that, despite everything, she still wanted a father who could answer her questions.

A nurse entered and informed Elena that she needed rest. Marcus agreed to wait in the corridor while Maya stayed with her mother.

When the room was quiet again, Elena reached for Maya's hand.

“There's something I haven't told you.””

Maya's heart sank.

“Another secret?””

Elena nodded.

“When you were born, I asked the nurse to let me hold the other baby.””

“Why?””

“Because she was crying, and I thought holding her might calm her down. She was so small. I remember her fingers wrapping around mine.””

Elena's voice trembled.

“Then the nurse came back and told me there had been a mistake. She took the baby away.””

Maya frowned.

“What kind of mistake?””

“She said the baby had been placed in the wrong bassinet. She told me not to worry, that everything had been corrected.””

“Did she say where the baby went?””

“No. She said the child had been transferred to another ward.””

Maya felt cold.

“Did you ever see her again?””

“No.””

“Did you ask?””

“Of course I asked! I asked every nurse I could find. But by the time I was discharged, the hospital administrator told me the baby had died.””

Elena wiped her cheeks.

“I believed them because I was exhausted, frightened, and trying to protect you from Vanessa. I should have pushed harder.””

Maya squeezed her hand.

“You didn't know.””

“I should have known.””

The words hung between them.

Maya thought of all the times she had blamed herself for being unwanted.

She had spent years wondering what was wrong with her, why her mother had supposedly left, why Vanessa seemed to resent every achievement.

Now she wondered whether the truth had been hidden because someone wanted to erase a child before she could ever be found.

Her phone vibrated.

A new message.

*THE GIRL'S NAME IS CHARLOTTE.*

Another followed.

*SHE KNOWS WHO YOU ARE.*

Maya typed with shaking fingers.

*WHERE IS SHE?*

The reply came seconds later.

*OLD MERCY HOSPITAL. MIDNIGHT. COME ALONE.*

Maya stared at the screen.

Old Mercy Hospital had closed years earlier after a fire damaged its maternity wing. The building stood abandoned on the edge of town, surrounded by a chain-link fence and warning signs.

She had passed it on school trips.

Everyone knew the stories about the place.

Marcus entered the room and saw her expression.

“What happened?””

Maya showed him the messages.

He read them, then immediately called Detective Harris.

“No one's going anywhere alone,” he said.

Maya nodded, but she was already thinking about the photograph.

The girl looked frightened.

If Charlotte was alive, she might be waiting for someone to help her.

If the messages were a trap, whoever sent them had chosen the one person Maya couldn't ignore.

A knock sounded at the door.

Detective Harris entered with a young officer carrying a laptop.

“We've identified the location in the photograph,” Harris said.

“It's a house outside Millbrook, registered to a company connected to Peter Lang.””

Maya stood.

“Is Charlotte there?””

“We don't know. Officers are on their way.””

“Then take me with you.””

“No.””

“Detective—”

“No, Maya. You are not going anywhere near that property.””

She glared at him.

“She's my sister.””

“She may be. But right now, she's also the center of a criminal investigation.””

Harris's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and his expression changed.

“What do you mean, the house is empty?””

He paced toward the window.

“When did they leave?””

Another pause.

“Was there anything inside?””

He closed his eyes.

“Check the basement. Check every room. Don't touch anything until forensics arrives.””

He ended the call.

Maya stepped forward.

“What happened?””

“The house is empty.””

“Was Charlotte there?””

“No.””

“Then where is she?””

Harris looked at the photograph.

“We found a child's bedroom, a packed suitcase, and a note taped to the mirror.””

“What did it say?””

The detective hesitated.

Then he read it aloud.

*SHE BELONGS WITH HER REAL FAMILY.*

Maya felt her stomach twist.

Marcus gripped the back of a chair.

“Who took her?””

“We don't know yet.””

Elena began to cry again.

Maya turned toward the window.

Outside, a helicopter passed over the hospital, its blades thudding through the night.

Someone had moved Charlotte before the police arrived.

Someone had known exactly when the officers would reach the house.

And that meant the person controlling this nightmare was still one step ahead of them.

Detective Harris's phone rang again.

He answered, listened, then slowly lowered it.

“What now?”” Marcus asked.

Harris looked at Maya.

“We recovered a security recording from the property next door.””

“Did it show Charlotte?””

“Yes.””

“Who was with her?””

The detective hesitated.

Then he turned the laptop toward them.

The footage showed a dark vehicle pulling away from the house.

A woman stood beside the driver's door.

Her face was turned toward the camera.

Vanessa.

Maya stepped closer to the screen.

“She took her.””

Harris nodded.

“It appears so.””

Maya's voice shook.

“Then arrest her.””

“We're issuing an alert for the vehicle.””

“She's been threatening my mother, shooting at my house, and now she's taken a thirteen-year-old girl!””

“I know.””

“Then do something!””

Harris held her gaze.

“We are.””

He paused the footage and enlarged Vanessa's face.

Then he pointed toward the passenger seat.

A second figure sat inside the vehicle.

A man.

Older, gray-haired, with a narrow scar across his left eyebrow.

Maya stared at the screen.

It was the man from the passport.

Peter Lang.

The man everyone had believed was dead.

But before Detective Harris could say another word, Maya's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A girl's voice whispered through the speaker.

“Maya?””

Maya stopped breathing.

“Charlotte?””

“Yes.””

“Where are you?””

“I don't know. I'm in a room with no windows.””

Maya gripped the phone.

“Are you hurt?””

“No. But the man says I have to leave with him.””

“Who?””

A door creaked on the other end of the call.

Charlotte began to cry.

“Please come get me.””

Then a man's voice cut through the line.

“Give me the phone, Charlotte.””

Maya heard a struggle.

The call dropped.

She stared at the screen, trembling.

Detective Harris was already shouting instructions into his radio.

Marcus pulled Maya into his arms, but she barely felt it.

Her sister was alive.

And Peter Lang had her.

A final message appeared on her phone.
