Chapter 7: The Photograph Behind the Frame
Maya called Daniel back seventeen times before the ambulance reached the hospital.
Every call went straight to voicemail.
On the eighteenth attempt, she heard a recorded message saying the number was no longer available.
She lowered the phone.
Beside her, Elena gripped the blanket around her shoulders. Her face had gone pale again, and her eyes were fixed on Maya's screen.
“Was that really Daniel?”” Elena whispered.
“He said he was.””
“What else did he tell you?””
Maya hesitated.
“He said Dad signed some kind of legal agreement before I was born. He said Vanessa could take everything from us if she found the original.””
Elena closed her eyes.
“Oh, Daniel. What have you done?””
Maya turned toward her.
“Mom, what does that mean?””
Before Elena could answer, the ambulance stopped outside the emergency entrance. Paramedics opened the doors, and a team of nurses hurried forward with a wheelchair.
Maya followed her mother into the hospital, refusing to let go of her hand until a nurse gently explained that Elena needed to be examined.
“Can I stay with her?”” Maya asked.
“For a little while,” the nurse replied.
“But we need to check her vital signs and make sure she's safe.””
Elena caught Maya's wrist.
“Don't go home alone.””
“I won't.””
“And don't open that photograph frame.””
Maya stared at her.
“Why does everyone keep saying that?””
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“Because some things are dangerous even when they look harmless.””
A nurse guided Elena through the double doors.
Maya stood in the corridor, surrounded by the sharp smell of disinfectant and the squeak of rubber soles against polished floors.
Her father arrived twenty minutes later.
His hair was wet from the rain, and his shirt was untucked. He looked as though he'd aged ten years since the gymnasium.
“Where's your mother?””
“Being examined.””
“Is she all right?””
“I don't know yet.””
Marcus reached for her shoulder.
Maya stepped aside.
He lowered his hand.
“I heard about the phone call,” he said.
“Detective Harris told me.””
“Did you know Daniel was alive?””
“No.””
“Did you know he was my father?””
Marcus looked toward the nurses' station.
“I suspected something was wrong with the story Vanessa told me. I never knew the truth.””
“That's not an answer.””
“No,” he admitted.
“It isn't.””
Maya folded her arms.
“Why did Daniel say you signed an agreement?””
Marcus's face changed.
For a moment, Maya saw something she had never seen in him before.
Recognition.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“Dad?””
He rubbed his jaw.
“There was a document. Before you were born, Daniel and I discussed something called a guardianship agreement.””
“What kind of agreement?””
“He believed his work was putting him in danger. He wanted to make sure you would be cared for if anything happened to him.””
“By you?””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“I agreed to become your legal guardian if he couldn't raise you himself.””
Maya stared at him.
“So you knew he was my father.””
“I knew Daniel believed he was your biological father. I didn't know what had happened between him and Elena until much later.””
“But you signed something.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me.””
“I thought it was an arrangement between friends. When Daniel disappeared, Vanessa told me he'd abandoned the agreement and wanted nothing to do with you.””
Maya's throat tightened.
“Why didn't you show me the paperwork?””
“Because I couldn't find it.””
“Where was it?””
Marcus looked toward the elevator.
“In my office. Behind the photograph of your first birthday.””
Maya felt the floor shift beneath her.
“You knew?””
“I searched for it years ago. The frame had been moved, and the original document was gone.””
“Who moved it?””
Marcus didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
Maya took a step backward.
“You let Vanessa control every piece of this family.””
His expression crumpled.
“I know.””
“No, Dad. You keep saying that, but you don't know what it was like to live with her. You didn't see what happened when you weren't home. You didn't hear her talking about Mom when she thought I was asleep.””
Marcus's eyes glistened.
“Tell me.””
Maya shook her head.
“It's too late to ask me to explain thirteen years in one conversation.””
She turned toward the hospital entrance.
“I need to go home.””
Marcus caught himself before reaching for her.
“I'll come with you.””
“No. I'm going to your office.””
“Maya—”
“If the agreement is still there, I want to see it. If it isn't, I want to know why.””
Marcus stared at her for a long moment.
Then he nodded.
“I'll take you.””
They drove home in silence.
Two police cruisers remained parked outside the house. Detective Harris had arranged for officers to secure the property while the investigation continued.
Marcus unlocked the front door, and they walked directly to his office.
The room smelled of leather, old paper, and the cedar polish Vanessa used on the furniture. Everything appeared untouched: the computer, the bookshelves, the framed certificates, the expensive desk lamp.
On the desk stood the photograph of Maya's first birthday.
She was laughing in the picture, one hand reaching toward a cupcake covered in pink icing.
Marcus picked up the frame.
“I've looked at this photograph hundreds of times.””
Maya examined the back.
Four small screws secured the panel.
One was missing.
“Dad.””
He turned the frame over.
A narrow strip of dust-free wood marked where someone had recently removed the backing.
Marcus fetched a screwdriver from a drawer and loosened the remaining screws.
The back panel came away.
Inside lay a folded document and a small black memory card taped to the wood.
Maya reached for the document.
The first page carried a courthouse seal and the signatures of Marcus Bennett and Daniel Cross.
Below them was a third signature.
Vanessa Reed.
Maya frowned.
“Why is Vanessa's name here?””
Marcus unfolded the pages.
His eyes moved quickly over the text, then stopped at a paragraph near the bottom.
“What is it?”” Maya asked.
He didn't answer.
She took the document from him and read.
The agreement established Marcus as Maya's legal guardian if Daniel was unable to provide care. It also contained a financial provision: a trust had been created in Maya's name, funded by assets Daniel had transferred before her birth.
Maya looked at the amount.
Then she read it again.
The trust was worth more than four million dollars.
“Why would Daniel leave me that much money?””
Marcus sat down heavily.
“Daniel had inherited a technology company from his father. He sold his shares before you were born.””
“And Vanessa knew about it?””
“She witnessed the agreement.””
Maya turned to the final page.
A handwritten note had been added beneath the signatures.
If I am declared missing or dead, no transfer of guardianship or trust assets shall occur without independent verification of my death.
Maya looked at Marcus.
“Does that mean Vanessa couldn't take the money?””
“Not legally.””
“Then why did Daniel say she could take everything?””
Marcus examined the memory card.
“Maybe there's more.””
He placed it in a small card reader connected to his computer.
A single video file appeared.
Its date was October 14, thirteen years earlier.
Maya's birthday.
Marcus clicked play.
The screen flickered.
Daniel appeared, sitting in a chair in what looked like the same office.
His face was bruised. A strip of blood ran down his temple.
He looked directly into the camera.
“If you're watching this, something has happened to me,” he said.
“And if Vanessa has gotten her hands on this recording, she probably believes she has won.””
Maya leaned closer to the screen.
Daniel continued.
“Marcus, I need you to understand something. The agreement you signed was never the whole story. Vanessa changed the final pages after you left the room.””
Marcus went rigid.
Daniel lifted a sheet of paper.
“She added a clause that would give her control of Maya's trust if I were declared legally dead. I discovered it tonight.””
Maya turned toward her father.
“You signed a different agreement?””
“I signed the original. I never saw this version.””
On the screen, Daniel looked toward something outside the camera's view.
Then he whispered, “She's here.””
A door opened.
Vanessa stepped into the recording.
She was younger, wearing a cream-colored blouse with a dark stain near the cuff.
Daniel stood.
“You told me you destroyed the altered copy,” he said.
Vanessa smiled without warmth.
“You should have left town when I gave you the chance.””
“I won't let you use Maya to steal my money.””
“It's not your money anymore.””
“It's hers.””
Vanessa approached the camera.
“Then perhaps we should make sure she never gets to use it.””
The screen shook.
A loud crash followed.
Daniel shouted.
Then the recording went black.
Maya stared at the empty screen.
Marcus slowly rose from his chair.
“Vanessa didn't just hide your mother,” he whispered.
“She tried to steal your inheritance.””
A knock sounded at the office door.
Both of them turned.
Detective Harris stood in the hallway, holding a clear evidence bag.
Inside it was a photograph of Daniel Cross.
“Mr. Bennett,” he said, “we've found something at the river where Daniel's car was abandoned.””
May you like
He looked at Maya.
“And I think you need to see it.””
