Chapter 14: The Truth Beneath the Ashes

Maya couldn't see anything.

She heard Charlotte crying, Detective Harris shouting, and footsteps pounding against the stairs.

Then a hand caught her shoulder.

“Stay down!”” Marcus yelled.

Another gunshot echoed through the corridor.

Maya dropped to her knees and crawled toward the wall, shielding her head with her arms. Dust and plaster rained from the ceiling.

“Charlotte!”” she screamed.

“I'm here!””

Her sister's voice came from the landing.

Maya crawled toward it.

A flashlight clicked on.

Detective Harris appeared through the beam, his weapon raised.

“Everyone stay where you are!””

Peter was lying on the floor near the stairwell. His pistol had skidded beneath a broken radiator. Blood darkened his sleeve.

Daniel stood several feet away, one hand pressed against his side.

Marcus hurried toward him.

“Daniel!””

“I'm all right.””

“You've been shot.””

“It's a graze.””

Harris knelt beside Peter and kicked the pistol farther away.

“Don't move.””

Peter laughed weakly.

“You think you've won?””

Harris secured his wrists.

“I think you're under arrest.””

Peter turned his head toward Maya.

“You still don't understand.””

Maya reached Charlotte and pulled her close.

“I understand that you're going to prison.””

Peter's smile widened.

“Ask your mother what happened after the fire.””

Maya froze.

“What fire?””

“The fire that supposedly killed your sister.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don't listen to him.””

Peter looked at Daniel.

“You were there.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“You started the fire.””

“I started nothing. I followed orders.””

“Whose orders?””

Peter laughed again.

“You really think Vanessa made every decision herself?””

Maya looked at Detective Harris.

“Get him out of here.””

Harris signaled to the officers. They lifted Peter to his feet and led him toward the stairs.

As he passed Maya, he leaned close enough for her to hear him.

“Your grandfather knew the truth.””

Then he was gone.

Maya held Charlotte tightly.

Her sister was trembling so violently that Maya could feel it through their coats.

“It's over,” Maya whispered.

Charlotte shook her head.

“No, it isn't.””

“What do you mean?””

Charlotte looked toward the far end of the corridor.

“There's someone else.””

Maya turned.

A door stood open near the old nurses' station.

Behind it, a woman was watching them.

Vanessa.

She wore a dark coat and held a small silver object in her hand.

Marcus stepped between her and the girls.

“Don't move.””

Vanessa smiled.

“You always did love playing the hero.””

“Put it down.””

She lifted the object.

A lighter.

Maya smelled gasoline.

The floor near the doorway glistened beneath the flashlight beam.

Detective Harris raised his weapon.

“Vanessa Reed, put the lighter down!””

Vanessa glanced at the old maternity ward.

“Do you know what happened here thirteen years ago?””

“No one cares about your stories,” Marcus said.

Vanessa's face twisted.

“You should. This building was supposed to burn everything that could connect me to the trust.””

Maya tightened her grip on Charlotte.

“You tried to kill us?””

“I tried to protect what belonged to me.””

“By setting a hospital on fire?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You have no idea what your family did.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You stole those children.””

“I saved one of them.””

Charlotte began crying again.

Vanessa pointed at her.

“She was the child Richard wanted. The one who was supposed to carry the Bennett name. But Elena chose you, Maya. She chose the wrong baby.””

Maya stared at her.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa's eyes shone with fury.

“Richard discovered that his father had secretly arranged for a newborn to inherit the estate. When the twins were born, one was supposed to be raised by the Bennetts, the other by Elena and Marcus. The plan was simple until Daniel interfered.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That isn't true.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You don't even know what your own daughter was supposed to be.””

She looked at Maya.

“Charlotte was meant to disappear into the Bennett family. You were meant to disappear into mine.””

Maya felt sick.

“Why?””

“Because Richard's will gave the firstborn child of his line control of the estate. But your father”—she pointed at Marcus—“was never Richard's heir. He was just the brother who survived.””

Marcus went pale.

“Richard's will was never probated.””

“Because Peter altered it.””

Vanessa's smile sharpened.

“He changed the birth records, the trust agreement, and the inheritance documents. Everything was arranged so that when Richard's supposed child reached adulthood, the estate would transfer automatically.””

Maya stared at Charlotte.

“So she was the heir?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you take her?””

“Because Peter wanted the money. And I wanted Marcus. We needed you both alive long enough to make the documents valid.””

Marcus's voice was low and dangerous.

“You were going to use my daughter.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I was going to give you the family you wanted.””

“You imprisoned my wife.””

“I kept her quiet.””

“You lied to me for thirteen years!””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“And you let me.””

The words struck him.

For a moment, Marcus had no answer.

Vanessa looked toward the stairwell, where the officers had taken Peter.

“He was supposed to handle the hospital records. Daniel was supposed to disappear. Elena was supposed to stay hidden. And you were supposed to remain ignorant.””

Maya felt her stomach turn.

“Did you kill Richard?””

Vanessa's expression flickered.

“I didn't touch him.””

“But you know who did.””

She looked toward Daniel.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Maya's voice broke.

“Tell me.””

Daniel looked at her, then at Charlotte.

“Richard discovered that Peter had been altering company accounts. He confronted him the night before the twins were born. Peter struck him, and Richard fell down a flight of stairs.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That's a lie.””

Daniel continued.

“Richard survived the fall. He was conscious when Peter dragged him into the car.””

Maya covered her mouth.

“They killed him?””

Daniel nodded.

“Peter drove the car off the road. The accident was staged.””

Marcus staggered backward.

“My brother was alive when they put him in that car?””

Daniel couldn't meet his eyes.

“Yes.””

Marcus turned away, pressing a fist against his mouth.

Maya had never seen her father cry like that.

Vanessa watched him with cold satisfaction.

“You see? Everyone has secrets.””

Detective Harris moved closer.

“Enough. Put the lighter down.””

Vanessa glanced at the gasoline spreading across the floor.

Then she flicked the lighter.

A small flame appeared.

Maya screamed.

Harris lunged.

Vanessa dropped the lighter, and it struck the gasoline-soaked floor.

Fire raced along the corridor.

Smoke billowed upward.

“Move!”” Harris shouted.

He pushed Maya and Charlotte toward the stairs while Marcus helped Daniel stumble forward.

Behind them, flames climbed the peeling walls.

Vanessa stood in the doorway, staring at the burning corridor.

For a second, Maya thought she might run.

Instead, Vanessa smiled.

“Now nobody will ever know.””

The ceiling cracked.

A heavy beam crashed down between Vanessa and the stairwell.

She screamed as smoke swallowed her.

Marcus turned back.

“Vanessa!””

Harris grabbed his arm.

“We can't reach her!””

“She'll die!””

“She chose to start the fire!””

Marcus struggled against him, but Maya caught his hand.

“Dad, please!””

He looked at her.

Tears streamed down his face.

Then he turned and followed them out.

They burst into the cold night as flames erupted from the maternity wing windows. Firefighters rushed toward the building, and officers pushed everyone behind the barricades.

Maya clung to Charlotte while paramedics treated Daniel.

Across the parking lot, Peter sat handcuffed inside a police cruiser, his face illuminated by the flashing lights.

For the first time in thirteen years, the truth was no longer buried.

But it still wasn't complete.

As firefighters entered the building, an officer approached Detective Harris with a sealed envelope recovered from Vanessa's coat.

The detective opened it.

Inside was a legal document bearing Richard Bennett's signature.

Maya stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Harris read the first paragraph.

Then he looked at Marcus.

“Mr. Bennett, your brother's will was never amended.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Harris turned the page.

“The estate doesn't belong to Peter Lang. It doesn't belong to you. And according to this document, it doesn't belong to either of your daughters.””

Maya felt Charlotte's fingers tighten around hers.

“Then who does it belong to?””

Harris looked at the final line.

His voice dropped.

“Richard Bennett named the beneficiary before either twin was born.””

He turned the document toward Maya.

The name beneath the signature was unmistakable.

*ELENA BENNETT.*

Maya stared at the page.

Her mother had never abandoned them.

May you like

She had never wanted the money.

And for thirteen years, she had been the one person everyone had tried to erase.
