Chapter 13: The Man Who Wanted Me Hidden

The message on my father’s phone changed everything.

Not because of the words.

Because of the fear on his face.

I had spent my whole life believing my father was fearless.

But standing in that classroom, with Sarah beside me and my father staring at an unknown number, I realized something.

My father wasn’t fearless.

He was someone who had been afraid for so long that he learned how to hide it.

“Who is he?””

My voice was quiet.

Marcus looked at the screen.

Then at me.

“I don’t know.””

Sarah immediately shook her head.

“You do.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Sarah.””

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“You spent years protecting his name.””

I looked between them.

“Whose name?””

Nobody answered.

Then Marcus whispered:

“Victor Holloway.””

The name felt heavy.

Like it belonged to someone everyone feared.

“Your grandfather?””

Marcus nodded.

I felt my stomach twist.

The man who had been controlling my family from the shadows.

The man who changed records.

The man who made people disappear.

The man I had never met.

“He’s alive?””

Sarah looked at me.

“Yes.””

The room seemed smaller.

“How?””

Marcus ran a hand through his hair.

“Because people like Victor don’t disappear.””

My father walked to the window.

For a moment, he wasn’t my father.

He was Michael Holloway.

The person he had spent years running from.

“I thought changing my name would end it.””

Sarah looked at him.

“But you never changed what you knew.””

He nodded.

“No.””

I stared at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

He turned.

“Because I wanted you to have a childhood.””

I shook my head.

“I had a childhood where I thought my mother abandoned me.””

His expression broke.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

The words came out sharper than I intended.

“You don’t know what it feels like to hate someone who might have loved you.””

My mother’s face flashed in my mind.

The empty chair.

Every school event.

Every birthday.

Every time I wondered why I wasn’t enough.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I know.””

I looked at him.

“Because you felt the same?””

He nodded.

“I spent ten years believing I lost your mother.””

Sarah quietly said:

“You both lost each other because Victor wanted you separated.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She walked toward the desk.

“Because you were the one thing he couldn’t control.””

“Me?””

She nodded.

“Victor built his entire life around power. Money. Fear. Control.””

She touched the folder.

“But you represented something he hated.””

“What?””

“Freedom.””

I didn’t understand.

Sarah opened another document.

“This is the original investigation report.””

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“Sarah.””

“No more hiding.””

She handed it to me.

The report was old.

The paper was damaged.

But one sentence stood out.

*Victor Holloway attempted to erase the identity of his granddaughter.*

My hands went cold.

“Granddaughter?””

Sarah looked at me.

“Yes.””

I swallowed.

“Why would he erase me?””

Marcus answered.

“Because you weren’t supposed to exist.””

The words hurt.

Not because they were true.

Because they came from my father.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked down.

“When your mother became pregnant, Victor believed the child would expose everything.””

“What everything?””

Sarah answered.

“The truth about Thomas.””

I looked at her.

“Thomas is my father?””

Sarah hesitated.

“Yes.””

My heart raced.

“But you said the records were changed.””

“They were.””

“Then why?””

Sarah looked at Marcus.

Because the answer belonged to him.

My father took a deep breath.

“Thomas wasn’t supposed to be with your mother.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Your grandfather arranged marriages. Alliances. Business relationships.””

I felt sick.

“He controlled everyone?””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked away.

“But Thomas refused.””

Sarah continued:

“He loved Amara.””

My mother.

The missing piece.

The person everyone kept talking about.

“And you?””

Marcus looked at me.

“I was supposed to help Victor separate them.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

The silence was brutal.

“I was young,” Marcus whispered.

“I thought I was protecting my family.””

I stepped back.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you still helped him?””

Tears filled his eyes.

“For one day.””

The room went silent.

“One day was enough.””

My voice shook.

“What happened?””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“That was the day your mother disappeared.””

I couldn’t breathe.

The door suddenly opened.

A security officer stood there.

“Lily?””

Everyone turned.

The officer looked nervous.

“There’s someone outside asking for you.””

Marcus immediately stood.

“Who?””

The officer swallowed.

“He said his name is Victor.””

My father went completely still.

Sarah whispered:

“He found her.””

May you like

And outside the classroom…

someone knocked.
