Chapter 5: The Secret In The Suitcase
The woman outside never entered.
Not immediately.
She didn’t have to.
Her name alone had changed the entire room.
Evelyn Holloway.
I watched the adults around me react like they had all heard a warning siren.
Except me.
I was the only person who didn’t know why.
Again.
I hated that feeling.
Being the last person to discover the truth about my own life.
Mrs. Carter gently touched my shoulder.
“Lily, maybe you should come with me.””
I moved away.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“I’m tired of leaving when people start talking.””
My mother’s eyes softened.
“You’re right.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Amara.””
“No,” she said.
“She’s old enough to know.””
My father looked like he wanted to argue.
But he stopped.
Maybe because he knew he had already hidden too much.
David walked closer.
“Evelyn shouldn’t be here.””
I looked at him.
“Who is she?””
David looked down.
“My mother.””
My stomach tightened.
The woman who had just arrived was David’s mother.
My father’s mother.
My grandmother.
A woman I had never heard about.
“Why would she come here?””
Nobody answered.
David looked at Marcus.
“Because she knows.””
Marcus’s expression turned cold.
“She doesn’t know everything.””
David laughed quietly.
“She knows enough.””
My mother picked up the suitcase.
“There’s something else inside.””
She placed it on the stage.
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
“Amara, don’t.””
She opened it anyway.
Inside were dozens of papers.
Old photographs.
Letters.
A small velvet box.
My mother lifted one of the letters.
“This was sent to me three months after I disappeared.””
I stared at her.
“You disappeared?””
Her face fell.
“That’s what he told you?””
I looked at Marcus.
He didn’t move.
“I was taken away from you.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“What?””
My mother’s hands shook.
“I woke up in a hospital in another state.””
Nobody spoke.
“I had no phone. No money. No way to contact you.””
Marcus looked down.
My heart started beating faster.
“Dad…”
He whispered:
“I thought she was gone.””
My mother turned toward him.
“You knew I was alive.””
The room went silent.
My father’s face changed.
And that was enough.
I stepped back.
“You knew?””
“Lily—”
“You knew?””
My voice broke.
“You let me believe she abandoned me?””
Marcus looked destroyed.
“I was trying to keep you safe.””
“From who?””
Again.
That question.
Again.
No answer.
David walked toward the suitcase.
“Because he wasn’t the only one hiding.””
He looked at the papers.
“He was protecting a secret.””
My mother pulled out a photograph.
She handed it to me.
It showed three people.
My father.
David.
And another man.
A man I didn’t recognize.
But there was something strange.
The three men were standing outside a large house.
On the back of the picture, someone had written:
“Before everything changed.””
I looked at David.
“Who is this?””
David’s expression became serious.
“That’s your grandfather.””
I looked closer.
The man’s eyes looked familiar.
Too familiar.
“Why didn’t I know about him?””
Marcus answered quietly.
“Because I didn’t want you connected to that family.””
David shook his head.
“You mean you didn’t want her connected to the truth.””
Before anyone could respond, the auditorium doors opened.
A woman stepped inside.
She looked older than my mother.
Her gray hair was perfectly styled.
Her expensive coat was completely dry despite the storm.
She looked around the room.
Then her eyes landed on me.
My entire body went cold.
Because she looked at me like she already knew me.
“Lily.””
Nobody had introduced us.
Yet she knew my name.
My father stepped in front of me.
“Evelyn.””
The woman smiled faintly.
“So after all these years, you finally stopped pretending.””
David looked angry.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Evelyn ignored him.
She looked directly at me.
“Your father has lied to you.””
Marcus’s voice became sharp.
“Enough.””
Evelyn tilted her head.
“You want to protect her?””
She laughed softly.
“Then tell her the truth about the night she was born.””
My mother’s face went pale.
David looked away.
And Marcus froze.
I felt my heart sink.
May you like
Because whatever happened that night…
was the one secret everyone was terrified to tell me.
