Chapter 6: The Night I Was Born
The auditorium was no longer a school auditorium.
Not to me.
It was a courtroom.
And everyone had a confession waiting.
My father stood in front of me.
Protecting me.
Or blocking me.
I couldn’t tell anymore.
“Tell her,” Evelyn said.
Marcus stared at her.
“You have no right.””
Evelyn smiled.
“I’m her grandmother.””
The word sounded strange.
Foreign.
I had spent my entire life believing my family was simple.
Just me and my father.
Now suddenly there were brothers, secrets, stolen identities, and people appearing from the past.
I looked at Marcus.
“Was she lying?””
He didn’t answer.
My chest tightened.
“Dad.””
Finally, he spoke.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
“No, she’s not.””
My mother closed her eyes.
David looked away.
And my entire world shifted.
“What happened?””
Marcus sat down on the edge of the stage.
For the first time, he looked tired.
Not scared.
Not angry.
Just tired.
“When you were born, I wasn’t Marcus Reed.””
Nobody moved.
“My name was Michael Holloway.””
The name hit me.
Michael.
Not Marcus.
Not the man I knew.
A stranger.
But the same person.
“You changed your name?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked at David.
“Because I was running.””
David crossed his arms.
“You always were.””
Marcus ignored him.
“My family was dangerous.””
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“Careful.””
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“I spent ten years protecting my daughter. I’m done being afraid.””
That was the first time I heard strength in his voice again.
The father I knew was still there.
Buried under secrets.
“I grew up with money,” Marcus continued.
“More than we ever needed.””
He looked at me.
“But money came with rules.””
“What rules?””
He swallowed.
“My father controlled everything.””
David added quietly:
“And everyone.””
Marcus nodded.
“He wanted us to become exactly what he wanted.””
I looked at David.
“And you?””
David laughed sadly.
“I tried to fight him.””
“And Dad?””
Marcus looked down.
“I tried to disappear.””
My mother stepped forward.
“But disappearing wasn’t enough.””
Marcus looked at her.
“I know.””
The pain between them was obvious.
They loved each other.
That was somehow worse.
Because it meant something had destroyed something real.
“What happened to Mom?””
Marcus looked at her.
“She found out about my past.””
My mother nodded.
“And when I tried to tell him I was pregnant with Lily…”
She stopped.
I held my breath.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“I realized someone was following me.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then David spoke.
“My father.””
The room went silent.
Evelyn looked away.
For the first time, she didn’t look powerful.
She looked guilty.
“You knew?”” I asked her.
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
My hands started shaking.
“You all knew.””
My voice cracked.
“All these years.””
Marcus stood.
“Lily, I never wanted you involved.””
“But I was involved.””
I pointed at myself.
“I was the child everyone was hiding things from.””
Nobody spoke.
Then my mother opened the velvet box from the suitcase.
Inside was a small necklace.
The same necklace from the old photograph.
She held it out.
“I kept this because it belonged to you.””
I stared at it.
“What do you mean?””
She looked at Marcus.
Then at David.
Then at me.
“When you were born, I found something your grandfather left behind.””
She opened the necklace.
Inside was a tiny hidden compartment.
My breath stopped.
There was a small piece of paper folded inside.
My mother unfolded it.
Everyone watched.
She read the words silently.
Then her face changed.
“What?””
She looked at Marcus.
“No…”
“What does it say?”” David asked.
My mother looked at me.
Her eyes filled with fear.
“Lily…”
She couldn’t finish.
Marcus took the paper.
His face went pale.
May you like
Because written on that tiny piece of paper was a sentence that changed everything.
*The child must never know who her real father is.*
