Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden In My Blood

The sentence stared back at me.

The child must never know who her real father is.

For a few seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

The words didn’t make sense.

Not because they were complicated.

Because they were impossible.

I looked at Marcus.

My father.

The man who held my hand when I learned how to ride a bike.

The man who stayed awake all night when I had a fever.

The man who told me every day that I was his greatest gift.

“Real father?””

My voice barely came out.

Nobody answered.

The silence was the answer.

I stepped backward.

“No.””

Marcus immediately moved toward me.

“Lily.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You’re my dad.””

His face broke.

“I am.””

“Then what does that mean?””

My fingers tightened around the old paper.

“What does ‘real father’ mean?””

Marcus looked like he wanted to tell me everything.

But something stopped him.

That hurt more than the secret itself.

My mother came closer.

“Lily, listen to me.””

I looked at her.

“Did you know?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Not at first.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

The word cut deeper than I expected.

I turned away.

“You knew there was another possibility.””

She nodded.

“I spent years trying to find the truth.””

“But you still let me call him Dad.””

Her voice broke.

“Because he is your dad.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

I looked at him.

“Am I your daughter?””

He didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.””

The answer came instantly.

Strong.

Certain.

“I don’t care what any paper says. I raised you. I loved you. I was there for every scraped knee, every nightmare, every birthday.””

His voice cracked.

“You are my daughter.””

For a moment, I believed him.

Because that was the problem.

He wasn’t a stranger.

He wasn’t some villain from a story.

He was my father.

But there was a missing piece of my life sitting right in front of me.

David stepped forward.

“Lily, you need to know what happened.””

Marcus turned.

“No.””

David’s expression hardened.

“You don’t get to choose anymore.””

My mother looked at David.

“What do you know?””

David looked at the paper.

“Enough.””

He walked closer.

“The night Lily was born, our father discovered something.””

“What?””

David looked at Marcus.

“That Michael wasn’t the only person trying to escape.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“David.””

But David continued.

“Our father had enemies. People who wanted information from our family.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with me?””

David looked at the necklace.

“Because your birth wasn’t supposed to happen.””

The room went completely still.

My mother covered her mouth.

I stared at him.

“What?””

David sighed.

“My father believed children were weaknesses.””

Marcus looked away.

“He was wrong.””

David nodded.

“He was.””

Evelyn, who had been silent, finally spoke.

“You’re making me sound like a monster.””

Everyone looked at her.

She walked closer.

“You don’t know what it was like living in that family.””

My mother laughed bitterly.

“No. We only know what it was like surviving it.””

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“You think you understand everything?””

She looked at me.

“You don’t.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What are you saying?””

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

“Tell her.””

Marcus said nothing.

“Tell her why you changed your name.””

Still nothing.

“Tell her why Amara disappeared.””

My mother’s expression changed.

“Evelyn.””

But the older woman continued.

“Tell her why her birth certificate was changed.””

The room exploded with whispers.

My knees felt weak.

“My birth certificate?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Lily…”

I stepped away.

“No.””

I looked at everyone.

“No more secrets.””

My voice shook.

“No more adults deciding what I can handle.””

I pointed at the paper.

“Tell me everything.””

Marcus stared at the floor.

Then he finally said:

“The man who was supposed to be your biological father…”

He stopped.

I waited.

Everyone waited.

Then Marcus whispered:

“Was never supposed to know you existed.””

My heart stopped.

Before I could ask what that meant, a loud crash came from outside.

Everyone turned.

A school employee ran into the auditorium.

“Mrs. Carter!””

She looked terrified.

“There’s someone outside.””

“What happened?”” Mrs. Carter asked.

The employee looked at me.

Then at Marcus.

“He says he’s Lily’s father.””

The world went silent.

Marcus went pale.

My mother grabbed my hand.

May you like

David looked toward the entrance.

And for the first time, Evelyn looked afraid.
