Chapter 8: The Father Who Never Knew Me
The man stood outside the auditorium doors.
I couldn’t see his face yet.
Only his shadow.
But everyone reacted like they knew exactly who he was.
Marcus didn’t move.
My mother squeezed my hand.
David whispered something I couldn’t hear.
Evelyn looked like she had seen something impossible.
I stared at them.
“How does everyone know him?””
Nobody answered.
Again.
The same silence.
The same wall.
The same feeling of being the only person without the missing pages of my own story.
The doors slowly opened.
A man stepped inside.
He was younger than I expected.
Maybe early forties.
He wore a simple jacket.
His eyes moved across the room.
Then stopped on me.
Everything changed.
His face softened.
Like he was looking at a memory.
“Lily.””
I froze.
Nobody had ever said my name like that.
Like they had been waiting years.
Marcus stepped between us.
“Leave.””
The man looked at him.
“Michael.””
The name made everyone react.
My father flinched.
“You don’t call me that.””
The man looked hurt.
“Because you changed your name?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
I looked at the stranger.
“Who are you?””
He swallowed.
“My name is Daniel Carter.””
My eyes moved toward Mrs. Carter.
She looked shocked.
“Carter?””
The man nodded.
“My father was the one who helped Amara when she disappeared.””
My mother stepped forward.
“Daniel…”
He looked at her.
“You kept your promise.””
She looked down.
“I tried.””
My mind was spinning.
Another person.
Another secret.
Another name.
I looked at Marcus.
“Is he my father?””
The question was terrifying.
Because everyone knew the answer mattered.
Marcus closed his eyes.
Daniel looked at me.
“I don’t know if I deserve that title.””
The honesty surprised me.
“But I know one thing.””
He stepped closer.
“I never abandoned you.””
Marcus immediately snapped.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You told her I left?””
Marcus didn’t respond.
My stomach dropped.
I turned toward my father.
“Dad?””
He looked devastated.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From him?””
Marcus shook his head.
“From everything.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“Still using that excuse.””
The tension between them felt older than me.
Older than my entire life.
My mother walked toward Daniel.
“You shouldn’t have come here.””
He looked at her.
“I had to.””
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Because I found the missing record.””
Everyone froze.
David stepped forward.
“What record?””
Daniel reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a folder.
“The original birth documents.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“The ones that were hidden.””
My hands went cold.
I felt like I was watching strangers argue about my existence.
Daniel opened the folder.
“There was a mistake made years ago.””
He looked at me.
“A mistake that changed your entire identity.””
My voice was quiet.
“What mistake?””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Then back at me.
“The name listed as your father…”
He paused.
“It wasn’t Michael Holloway.””
Nobody breathed.
“It wasn’t Marcus Reed.””
My heart pounded.
“Then who was it?””
Daniel looked down.
“I don’t know.””
Everyone stared at him.
“What?””
He continued.
“Someone removed the name.””
David stepped forward.
“That’s impossible.””
“It happened.””
Daniel handed the document to me.
I looked at the page.
The father’s name section had been covered.
Not erased.
Covered.
Like someone wanted the original hidden.
My mother whispered:
“No…”
I looked at her.
“You know?””
She shook her head.
“I thought I did.””
Marcus suddenly moved toward me.
“Give me that.””
I pulled it away.
“Why?””
His face changed.
Because he knew.
Because he was afraid of what I would find.
I looked at the paper again.
There was something written in tiny handwriting at the bottom.
A note.
I leaned closer.
Only three words.
*He is alive.*
My heart stopped.
I looked up.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel whispered:
“The man who signed that paper.””
A sound came from behind us.
A phone ringing.
Everyone turned.
This time, it wasn’t Marcus’s phone.
It was mine.
I didn’t even know the number.
The screen showed:
UNKNOWN CALLER.
I stared at it.
Nobody told me to answer.
Nobody stopped me.
Slowly, I pressed the button.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only breathing.
Then a man’s voice spoke.
A voice I had never heard before.
But somehow felt familiar.
“Lily…”
I froze.
“How do you know my name?””
May you like
The voice trembled.
“Because I’ve been looking for my daughter for ten years.””
