Chapter 4: The Man Behind My Father’s Name

The stranger’s footsteps echoed across the auditorium.

Slow.

Confident.

Like he already knew he belonged there.

I stared at him from the stage, unable to move.

David Holloway.

The name that had terrified my father.

The name my mother had carried for ten years.

The name hidden inside an old notebook.

My fingers tightened around the photograph.

“Dad?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He was looking at the man walking toward us like he was seeing a ghost.

David stopped several feet away.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then David looked at Marcus.

“Still pretending?””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“You shouldn’t have come here.””

David gave a small, humorless smile.

“You said that ten years ago too.””

A wave of whispers moved through the audience.

Mrs. Carter stepped forward.

“This is a school event. Whatever this is, it needs to happen somewhere else.””

But nobody listened.

Not anymore.

The truth had walked into the room.

And everyone wanted to see it.

I looked at my father.

“Who is he?””

Marcus finally looked at me.

His eyes were filled with something I couldn’t understand.

Regret.

Fear.

Pain.

“Lily…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I need an answer.””

David looked at me.

His expression softened.

“You deserve one.””

Marcus immediately turned toward him.

“Don’t.””

David ignored him.

“Your father and I were brothers.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“I know.””

“But that’s not the whole story.””

The room became silent.

My mother stepped closer to me.

“Lily, listen carefully.””

I looked at her.

She looked different now.

Not like a stranger.

Like someone who had been carrying a heavy weight for years.

David reached into his coat pocket.

Marcus moved instantly.

“Don’t.””

David stopped.

“What? Afraid she’ll see?””

My father’s hands curled into fists.

I had never seen him like that.

Not when bills piled up.

Not when he lost his job.

Not when my school called him about problems.

Never.

Only now.

Because of David.

“See what?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

David pulled out an old envelope.

The paper was worn and yellow.

He handed it to me.

“Your mother found this years ago.””

Marcus shook his head.

“She shouldn’t have.””

My mother’s voice was quiet.

“I found it because you left it behind.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a newspaper clipping.

A picture.

And a birth certificate.

My eyes scanned the page.

Then stopped.

I looked up slowly.

“This says…”

My voice disappeared.

David watched me.

“Say it.””

I looked at my father.

“This says Marcus Reed isn’t your real name.””

The entire auditorium seemed to disappear.

My father closed his eyes.

I felt like the floor had moved beneath me.

For my entire life, I knew my father as Marcus Reed.

The man who packed my lunches.

The man who stayed awake when I was sick.

The man who sang off-key when I couldn’t sleep.

Now suddenly, he was someone else.

“Dad…”

He opened his eyes.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

He looked at David.

“From him.””

David’s expression hardened.

“That’s a lie.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“I know exactly what happened.””

Their voices grew louder.

The auditorium lights reflected against the tears in my mother’s eyes.

I looked between them.

Two men connected by the same blood.

Two people who knew the truth.

And me standing in the middle.

“Someone tell me what happened.””

My voice wasn’t loud.

But everyone heard it.

David looked at Marcus.

Then back at me.

“Your father was supposed to inherit everything.””

Marcus’s face changed.

David continued.

“But he ran.””

“Stop.””

“No.””

David’s voice became sharper.

“He changed his name. He disappeared. He left people searching for him.””

My mother whispered:

“Including me.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She nodded slowly.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because every time I got close to the truth, someone made sure I couldn’t.””

The words sent a chill through me.

Someone.

Not something.

Someone.

I looked at Marcus.

“Who?””

He looked away.

That was when I knew.

There was another piece.

Another secret.

A loud crash suddenly came from the entrance.

Everyone turned.

A woman from the school security team rushed inside.

“Mr. Reed…”

She stopped when she saw the crowd.

“Sorry, but there’s someone asking for Lily.””

Marcus immediately reacted.

“Who?””

The security guard looked confused.

“A woman.””

My mother froze.

“What woman?””

The guard swallowed.

“She said her name is Evelyn Holloway.””

David’s face changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Marcus whispered:

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Who is Evelyn?””

Nobody answered.

Then David slowly turned toward the door.

May you like

And whispered:

“She found us.””
