Chapter 9: The Man In The Photograph

The phone slipped slightly in my hand.

My fingers went numb.

My daughter.

Those words echoed through my mind.

Not because they sounded comforting.

Because they sounded impossible.

I looked around the auditorium.

At my mother.

At Marcus.

At David.

At Daniel.

Everyone was watching me.

Everyone already knew this moment was coming.

Except me.

“Who are you?””

My voice shook.

The man on the phone was silent.

Then he said:

“My name is Thomas Holloway.””

The reaction was immediate.

David stepped back.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Marcus looked like the air had been knocked out of him.

I whispered:

“Holloway?””

The man continued.

“I know you have questions.””

I laughed softly.

Questions.

That was the smallest word for what I felt.

“My whole life is a question.””

Nobody spoke.

Thomas’s voice became softer.

“I’m sorry.””

I closed my eyes.

I hated those words.

Everyone was sorry.

Everyone had reasons.

Everyone had secrets.

But I was the one who had to carry them.

“Why did you leave?””

The silence on the phone was long.

Then:

“I didn’t.””

My eyes opened.

“What?””

“I never left.””

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“Hang up.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because he’s lying.””

The man on the phone heard.

“Michael.””

My father froze.

The name.

Again.

The name from before.

Thomas continued.

“You still blame me after all these years.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Thomas sighed.

“I know exactly what happened.””

My mother stepped closer.

“Thomas…”

His voice changed when he heard her.

“Amara.””

The way he said her name made me look at her.

There was history there.

Not just between my father and mother.

Between all of them.

I felt like my family tree was becoming a forest I couldn’t escape.

“Mom,” I whispered.

She looked at me.

“I need the truth.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

Thomas spoke again.

“Lily, there’s something you need to understand.””

“What?””

“Your mother didn’t leave because she wanted to.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Then why?””

Nobody answered.

Thomas did.

“Because someone made sure she couldn’t come back.””

The words were heavy.

My mother closed her eyes.

David looked angry.

Evelyn looked away.

I stared at Marcus.

“Who?””

The phone went quiet.

Then Thomas said:

“Your father knows.””

My chest tightened.

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Thomas continued.

“He knows who took Amara away.””

My mother looked at Marcus.

And this time, I saw something different in her eyes.

Not anger.

Betrayal.

“You knew?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My mother stepped away from him.

“Michael…”

“I was trying to fix it.””

“Ten years?””

Her voice broke.

“You were trying to fix it for ten years?””

Marcus looked destroyed.

“I thought if I kept Lily away from all of this, she would have a normal life.””

I stared at him.

“Normal?””

My voice rose.

“Do you know what normal felt like?””

Tears burned my eyes.

“Normal was wondering why everyone else had mothers at school events.””

Marcus looked down.

“Lily…”

“Normal was pretending I didn’t care when people asked where she was.””

My voice cracked.

“Normal was believing she left because I wasn’t enough.””

That sentence destroyed him.

He covered his face.

And for the first time, I saw my father cry.

Not quietly.

Not secretly.

Completely.

The room became silent.

Then David walked toward the photograph still sitting on the stage.

He picked it up.

“There’s one thing nobody has mentioned.””

Everyone looked at him.

He turned the picture around.

“The man standing beside us.””

I looked at the photo.

The unknown man.

The one with familiar eyes.

David pointed.

“That’s Thomas.””

My heart stopped.

“But…”

I looked at the phone.

Then the picture.

The man in the photograph was younger.

But the face was the same.

Thomas’s voice came through the speaker.

“You finally found it.””

Nobody moved.

I looked at Marcus.

Then at the picture.

Then at the phone.

Three men.

Three secrets.

One family.

“Why was your name hidden?”” I asked.

Thomas didn’t answer immediately.

When he did, his voice was quiet.

“Because if they knew I was your father…”

The line crackled.

Everyone leaned closer.

“…they would have come after you.””

The call suddenly ended.

I stared at the phone.

“Hello?””

Nothing.

Then another sound filled the auditorium.

A notification.

My phone received a message.

One sentence.

One name.

May you like

And a warning.

*Ask Marcus what happened to Sarah Holloway.*
