Chapter 11: The Name On The Paper

Marcus held the document like it could burn him.

“Legal guardian?””

His voice was quiet.

“Why does this say you were the guardian?””

Evelyn looked away.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

He lifted the paper.

“You don’t get to do that anymore.””

Her face tightened.

“Do what?””

“Say my name and expect me to stop asking questions.””

The backyard became painfully still.

His father stood beside him, watching.

Not interfering.

Not answering.

Just letting Marcus finally have the truth.

I looked at the paper.

I couldn’t see everything from where I stood.

But I saw enough.

The date.

The signature.

The medical center stamp.

And Evelyn’s name.

Marcus looked at his father.

“Did you know about this?””

His father shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why were you looking into it?””

The older man hesitated.

“Because I received a message months ago.””

“From who?””

He looked at Evelyn.

“Someone who knew the truth was buried.””

Evelyn’s face changed.

“Who?””

Her husband didn’t answer.

Marcus noticed.

“You know who.””

The man looked down.

“I suspected.””

“Who?””

A long silence.

Then:

“Your grandmother.””

Evelyn froze.

“My mother?””

Everyone stared.

Marcus looked confused.

“My grandmother has something to do with this?””

His father nodded slowly.

“Your grandmother knew more about the family history than anyone.””

Evelyn looked shaken.

“She’s been gone for years.””

“Yes.””

“Then how?””

His father looked at the folder.

“Because before she died, she left instructions.””

Marcus stared.

“Instructions?””

“She wanted the truth revealed if certain things happened.””

“What things?””

His father looked at the envelope.

“A DNA test.””

The words made my skin crawl.

This wasn’t random.

Someone had planned for this moment.

Someone had known the secret would eventually come out.

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“You knew about this?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

For the first time, she sounded genuinely confused.

Marcus watched her carefully.

“Are you telling the truth?””

She looked hurt.

“You think I’m lying?””

He didn’t answer.

That hurt her more.

I understood why.

Because trust was not something that could be repaired with one conversation.

Too much had happened.

Marcus looked back at the paper.

“So what was the test for?””

His father took a breath.

“To confirm something.””

“What?””

“That someone in this family had been hiding your real history.””

Marcus looked frustrated.

“That doesn’t answer anything.””

“No.””

His father stepped closer.

“Because I don’t know everything.””

The honesty seemed to surprise Marcus.

After a lifetime of secrets, someone finally admitted they didn’t have all the answers.

Marcus looked at me.

“I feel like my entire life is a lie.””

I squeezed his hand.

“Not all of it.””

He looked at me.

“You don’t know that.””

“No.””

I swallowed.

“But I know what I saw.””

“What?””

“I saw the man who protected me when your mother hurt me.””

His expression softened.

“I saw the man who stood beside me when everyone else was watching.””

I touched his arm.

“Whatever the paperwork says, you are still you.””

His eyes became glassy.

But before he could respond, Evelyn spoke.

“Nia.””

I turned.

Her voice was different.

Less sharp.

Less controlled.

“What?””

She looked at my stomach.

Then at me.

“I need to tell you something.””

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“No more secrets.””

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“I know.””

She looked down.

“The reason I suspected the baby’s DNA wasn’t because of Marcus.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“It was because of me.””

I felt cold.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn took a shaky breath.

“It means I found something in my own medical records.””

Marcus frowned.

“Your medical records?””

She nodded.

“A record from before Marcus was born.””

Her hands trembled.

“And it made me question everything.””

The wind moved through the trees.

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus asked:

“What did it say?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“It said I had a child before you.””

Silence.

A child before Marcus.

A secret sibling.

Another hidden piece of a family already full of them.

Marcus stared.

“You had another child?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“Yes.””

“And where is that child?””

She looked at me.

Then at the envelope.

May you like

Then whispered:

“That’s the reason the DNA test was ordered.””
