Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Before Us

Marcus didn’t move.

That scared me more than if he had shouted.

I had seen my husband angry before.

I had seen him frustrated.

I had seen him exhausted after long days at work.

But I had never seen him look lost.

Like the person standing in front of him no longer fit the picture he had carried his entire life.

“Marcus?”” I whispered.

He looked at me.

Then at Evelyn.

The envelope was still in his hand.

“What did you tell her?”” he asked.

Evelyn’s lips parted.

“Who was on the phone?””

Marcus ignored the question.

“What did you tell her, Mom?””

The guests slowly began stepping back.

Not because they didn’t care.

Because they understood they were watching something private unfold.

A family breaking apart in real time.

Evelyn looked at me.

“This is exactly why I tried to stop this.””

I stared at her.

“No. You tried to stop this because you were afraid.””

Her eyes flashed.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“Then tell us.””

She didn’t.

Again.

That silence.

That horrible silence.

Marcus noticed.

“Why won’t you answer?””

Evelyn looked away.

For years, I had watched people give Evelyn excuses.

She was strong.

She was protective.

She was just honest.

But I learned something that day.

Sometimes people call themselves honest because it sounds better than cruel.

Marcus walked toward the table and placed the envelope down for a moment.

“Who called?””

He looked at me.

“The woman said she worked at the medical center.””

My heart sank.

“What did she say?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he looked at Evelyn.

“She asked why my mother was still trying to stop us from seeing the results.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

Tasha covered her mouth.

Someone whispered, “Oh my God.””

Evelyn immediately raised her voice.

“That’s not what happened.””

Marcus turned.

“Then what happened?””

She shook her head.

“You’re twisting things.””

“No,” he said.

“I’m asking one question.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“Why did you get the results before us?””

Evelyn looked at him.

And for the first time, I saw the pain in her face.

Not because she was sorry.

Because she was losing control.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Marcus laughed once.

A sad, broken sound.

“From what?””

No answer.

He looked at me.

“I should have known.””

I reached for his hand.

“Marcus.””

He looked down at our fingers.

“I should have listened when you told me something felt wrong.””

That hurt.

Because I didn’t want him to blame himself.

I wanted him to understand.

“You trusted your family,” I said softly.

He looked at Evelyn.

“And she used that.””

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“Careful.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

“It sounded like one.””

The baby kicked.

A small movement.

A reminder that beneath all this anger and betrayal, there was still a child coming into the world.

I placed my hand over my belly.

Evelyn saw it.

And something changed.

Her anger faded.

Her fear returned.

“Nia,” she said quietly.

I looked at her.

“What?””

She swallowed.

For the first time all day, her voice sounded almost human.

“You don’t understand what that envelope means.””

I stared at her.

“Then explain it.””

She looked at Marcus.

Then at me.

Then at the envelope.

“I can’t.””

Marcus stepped back.

“You can’t?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Not here.””

I felt a chill.

Because that wasn’t the answer of someone who had nothing to hide.

That was the answer of someone protecting something.

Marcus picked up the envelope again.

“I’m done waiting.””

Evelyn moved forward.

“Marcus, please.””

The word shocked everyone.

Evelyn Carter did not beg.

Not for anyone.

Marcus looked at her.

“Please what?””

Her voice dropped.

“Please don’t open that until you hear the whole story.””

My fingers tightened around my dress.

Because suddenly I realized something.

She wasn’t asking him not to open it because the results would hurt me.

She was asking because the truth would hurt her.

Marcus stared at the sealed envelope.

The entire party waited.

The music had stopped.

The cameras had stopped recording.

The celebration was gone.

There was only a son, a wife, and a mother standing between them.

Then Marcus’s phone buzzed again.

A new message appeared.

He looked down.

His face changed instantly.

“What?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Marcus?””

Slowly, he turned the phone toward me.

The message was from the same unknown number.

One sentence.

One sentence that made Evelyn take a step backward.

*“Before you open the envelope, ask your mother who the baby’s biological father is.””*

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

I looked at Evelyn.

May you like

And she whispered the one thing I never expected to hear.

“I was trying to protect you from the truth.””
