Chapter 14: The Truth Evelyn Buried
Marcus stared at the photograph.
Not at the image.
At the handwriting.
At the words.
Because sometimes the smallest details hurt the most.
A date.
A name.
A sentence written by someone who never expected to be discovered.
“Who is he?””
Marcus’s voice was barely audible.
Evelyn didn’t answer.
Danielle did.
“His name was Thomas.””
Marcus looked at her.
“My father?””
Danielle shook her head.
“No.””
A pause.
“Your biological father.””
Nobody spoke.
The world seemed to tilt.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
“You knew?””
She cried silently.
“I suspected.””
The answer was almost worse.
Marcus stepped back.
“So my entire life…”
He stopped.
Because he couldn’t finish the sentence.
I moved toward him.
But he raised a hand.
Not to push me away.
Just because he needed a moment.
Danielle looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Why are you sorry?””
“Because you deserved the truth.””
He looked down.
“I don’t even know what the truth is anymore.””
That was the hardest part.
Not the secrets.
Not the betrayal.
The uncertainty.
Evelyn sat down.
Her strength was gone.
“I was afraid.””
Marcus looked at her.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Her voice cracked.
“When I found out I was pregnant with you, I was already drowning in mistakes.””
She looked at Danielle.
“I had given up my first child.””
Danielle looked away.
“And I couldn’t survive losing another.””
Marcus stared.
“So you lied.””
“Yes.””
“You lied about Dad.””
“Yes.””
“You lied about Danielle.””
“Yes.””
“You lied about me.””
The word hurt her.
Because it was true.
Evelyn covered her face.
“I thought if I controlled everything, I could keep my family together.””
Marcus laughed softly.
“But you destroyed it.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
For once, nobody argued.
The truth had finally become too heavy for excuses.
Danielle looked at the envelope.
“There’s still one thing.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
She looked at Marcus.
“The DNA result.””
Marcus still held it.
The paper that started everything.
He opened it.
Slowly.
No one stopped him this time.
He read.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he looked confused.
“What?””
My heart raced.
“What does it say?””
He looked at me.
Then at Danielle.
Then Evelyn.
“It says there is a confirmed biological match.””
Everyone froze.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Marcus looked at the report again.
“But not between me and the baby.””
The silence was immediate.
“What?””
Marcus turned the paper.
“The test wasn’t performed on the baby.””
Danielle nodded.
“I told you.””
Marcus looked at the top of the report.
Then his face changed.
“Wait.””
“What?””
He looked closer.
“This isn’t my DNA either.””
My stomach dropped.
“Then whose is it?””
Marcus turned the page.
There was a name.
A name none of us expected.
He whispered:
“Thomas Carter.””
Evelyn’s face went completely white.
Marcus looked at her.
“My biological father?””
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was already there.
Danielle stepped closer.
“That’s why I came.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because Thomas wasn’t just your father.””
She paused.
“He was mine too.””
Marcus looked stunned.
“But you said—”
“I said he was my biological father.””
She looked at Evelyn.
“The man in the photograph.””
Evelyn started crying.
Marcus looked between them.
“So you knew.””
Evelyn whispered:
“Yes.””
“Both of us?””
“Yes.””
The backyard fell silent.
Two children.
One mother.
One secret.
A lifetime built on a lie.
Then Marcus looked at the DNA report again.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He pointed at the date.
“This test was done recently.””
Danielle nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who requested it?””
Nobody answered.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
Then at Danielle.
Then at me.
And slowly, his eyes moved toward the gift table.
Toward the place where the original envelope had been hidden.
“Someone wanted me to find this.””
The realization sent a chill through everyone.
Because this wasn’t just a secret being uncovered.
Someone had guided us here.
Marcus looked at the unknown phone number.
Then at the entrance.
“Who contacted you?””
Danielle hesitated.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus stared.
“You came here because someone told you to.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Danielle looked frightened.
May you like
Then she whispered:
“The person who knows the truth about your baby.””
