Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Seal
Marcus pulled the envelope away before Evelyn could touch it.
The movement was quick.
Almost instinctive.
His body reacted before his mind could catch up.
“Don’t,” he said.
The word wasn’t loud.
But everyone heard it.
Evelyn stopped.
Her hand stayed frozen in the air.
For a moment, she looked less like the powerful woman everyone knew and more like someone who had just watched a door close that she desperately needed to keep open.
I stood beside Marcus, still covered in frosting.
The baby shower decorations around us suddenly felt unreal.
The pink balloons.
The flowers.
The cake.
The gifts.
Everything had been designed to celebrate a new beginning.
But now everyone was staring at a sealed envelope that threatened to destroy an old one.
Marcus looked at me.
“Nia, tell me what’s happening.””
I wanted to.
I wanted to explain everything.
The late-night phone call.
The strange message.
The appointment I never scheduled.
The moment I realized Evelyn knew something about my pregnancy that even I didn’t know.
But the words got stuck.
Because this wasn’t just about me.
This was about him.
About the man I married.
About the woman who raised him.
“I wanted to tell you when I had the proof,” I said.
Marcus shook his head.
“Proof of what?””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“She’s trying to turn you against your own mother.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Mom, stop.””
That single sentence made Evelyn go quiet.
Because Marcus had always defended her.
Even when she was wrong.
Even when she made cruel comments.
Even when she treated me like I was someone who needed to earn my place in the family.
But today was different.
Today, he had watched her hurt me.
And now he was holding something she had no right to possess.
Evelyn crossed her arms.
“You really believe her over me?””
Marcus looked at the envelope.
“I believe what I can see.””
Her face tightened.
“You’re making a mistake.””
I stepped forward.
“No, Evelyn. The mistake was thinking you could control this forever.””
A murmur moved through the guests.
My sister-in-law Tasha, who had been standing near the flower arrangement, finally spoke.
“Nia, what happened?””
I looked at her.
Then at everyone else.
Because I realized they deserved to know why this moment happened.
Not every detail.
Not yet.
But enough.
“Three weeks ago, I received a call from the medical center,” I said.
Marcus frowned.
“You never told me that.””
“I tried.””
His expression changed.
“When?””
“The night you came home late.””
His eyes narrowed.
“What call?””
I looked directly at Evelyn.
“The one saying someone had already requested information about our baby.””
Marcus turned toward his mother.
Evelyn immediately shook her head.
“That’s ridiculous.””
“Is it?”” I asked.
She looked away.
Just for a second.
But everyone saw.
Marcus noticed too.
“Mom.””
Evelyn sighed.
“You’re misunderstanding.””
“Then explain.””
Silence.
The kind of silence that answers a question before anyone says anything.
Marcus looked hurt.
Not angry.
Not yet.
Just hurt.
Because the woman standing in front of him was his mother.
And he wanted so badly to believe there was another explanation.
“Why did you have prenatal DNA results?”” he asked.
Evelyn’s voice became softer.
“I was trying to protect this family.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I heard.
“Protect us?””
“Yes.””
“By secretly testing our baby?””
Her jaw tightened.
“You don’t know what I know.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“What do you know?””
Evelyn looked between us.
Then her eyes landed on my stomach.
And the fear returned.
Not guilt.
Fear.
That was when I understood something.
Evelyn wasn’t afraid because she had been caught.
She was afraid because whatever was inside that envelope could not be controlled anymore.
Marcus looked down at the seal.
“I’m opening this.””
Evelyn’s voice rose.
“No.””
Everyone froze.
Marcus looked at her.
“Why?””
She had no answer.
I watched her search for one.
Any excuse.
Any lie.
But she was trapped.
Finally, she whispered:
“Because once you know the truth, nothing in this family will ever be the same.””
The wind moved through the decorations above us.
A few pink balloons shook against their strings.
Marcus stared at the envelope.
Then he looked at me.
“Did you know what was inside?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
That was the hardest truth.
I didn’t know.
I only knew Evelyn was desperate to hide it.
Marcus ran his thumb along the edge.
The guests held their breath.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone looked at him.
The screen showed an unknown number.
Marcus almost ignored it.
Almost.
But something made him answer.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
I couldn’t hear the words.
Only Marcus’s expression changing.
His eyes moved from the envelope…
to Evelyn.
Then to me.
“What did you say?”” he asked.
The woman spoke again.
Marcus went completely still.
“Wait,” he said.
“How do you know about that envelope?””
My stomach tightened.
Evelyn looked terrified.
May you like
And then Marcus slowly lowered the phone.
“She said something that changes everything.””
