Chapter 9: The Truth Buried For Thirty Years

Nobody spoke after that.

Thirty years.

Those words stayed in the air.

Like something too heavy to disappear.

Marcus looked at his father.

Then at Evelyn.

Then down at the envelope.

“What does that mean?””

His father stepped closer.

“Your mother told you I left because I wanted another family.””

Evelyn’s face tightened.

“Don’t.””

The older man ignored her.

“She told you I didn’t care enough to stay.””

Marcus’s eyes filled.

“That’s what happened.””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“I was forced out.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

His father looked hurt.

“I know what you were told.””

“Because it’s the truth.””

“No.””

The man’s voice became stronger.

“Because it’s the story she wanted you to believe.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You don’t get to walk back into his life and rewrite history.””

Her husband looked at her.

“I’m not rewriting anything.””

He held up the folder.

“I brought proof.””

Marcus stared.

The folder.

Another piece of evidence.

Another secret.

“How long have you known about this?””

The man looked at Nia.

“Long enough to know something was wrong.””

I frowned.

“With me?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Marcus.

“With your family.””

Marcus opened the envelope slightly.

The paper inside moved.

His father’s eyes followed it.

“Before you read that, you need to know what your mother did.””

Evelyn looked terrified.

“Don’t.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

“Why are you afraid?””

Her silence was enough.

Marcus looked at his father.

“Tell me.””

The older man took a deep breath.

“Years ago, your mother found out something about our marriage.””

Marcus waited.

“What?””

His father looked at Evelyn.

“She found out I wasn’t the only one keeping secrets.””

Evelyn’s face changed.

The guests looked confused.

I felt a chill.

Because this wasn’t ending.

It was getting deeper.

Marcus’s voice became quiet.

“What secret?””

His father opened the folder.

Inside were old documents.

Photos.

Medical records.

Letters.

He removed one page.

“This.””

Marcus took it.

His eyes moved across the paper.

I watched his expression change.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

“Marcus?””

Slowly, he looked up.

“This is from before I was born.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

His father nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at the document again.

Then at his mother.

“Why is my name on this?””

No one spoke.

The question sounded impossible.

His name.

On a document from before he was born.

Evelyn whispered:

“Marcus…”

He stepped back.

“No.””

His voice shook.

“No, don’t.””

His father looked at him.

“There’s something you need to know.””

The envelope in Marcus’s hand suddenly became less important.

Because the secret inside it was no longer the biggest one.

The past had opened.

And it was reaching into the present.

Marcus looked at his father.

“What am I looking at?””

His father hesitated.

Then answered:

“The reason your mother ordered the DNA test.””

A cold wind moved through the backyard.

The pink balloons above us twisted on their strings.

May you like

And Evelyn whispered the words nobody expected.

“Because I was trying to find out if Marcus was ever really my son.””
